Day 6: Reaching New Heights: Conquering Jebel El-Kelaa in Chefchaouen
An exhilarating hike to Jebel El-Kelaa's summit, savoring local flavors, and finding unique treasures in Chefchaouen's blue streets.
Summiting Jebel El-Kelaa: A Day of Adventure
Today was all about pushing my limits and soaking in the breathtaking beauty of Chefchaouen from a different perspective. Daniel and I, along with our friends, embarked on a hike to the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa. It was a day filled with stunning vistas, delicious food, and a touch of souvenir shopping in the vibrant blue streets.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at our riad, Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, fueling up for the adventure ahead.

The crisp mountain air invigorated us as we set off towards Jebel El-Kelaa. The initial part of the trail was a gentle incline, which was perfect for warming up our muscles. As we ascended, the views of Chefchaouen became more and more panoramic, a mesmerizing tapestry of blue hues nestled amidst the Rif Mountains.
The path gradually grew steeper, challenging our stamina, but the well-marked trails made it manageable for everyone. I was grateful I'd packed my comfortable hiking shoes; they were essential for navigating the rocky terrain. The weather in November was ideal for hiking, with a cool breeze and clear skies. I made sure to apply sunscreen, remembering my promise to be more diligent after almost forgetting it at the start of the trip.
Along the way, we encountered diverse local vegetation, a mix of pine forests and shrubs clinging to the mountainside. We even saw some friendly locals tending to their goats, their smiles as warm as the midday sun. Daniel, ever the curious one, struck up a conversation with one of the shepherds, learning about their traditional way of life in the mountains.
Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
The final ascent to the summit was the most challenging, but the anticipation of the views spurred us on. Reaching the top, we were rewarded with awe-inspiring panoramas of Chefchaouen and the surrounding Rif Mountains. The vista stretched out before us, an endless expanse of rolling hills and valleys, painted in shades of green and brown. We took countless photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment, but no image could truly do it justice.
At the summit, we found a small café where we enjoyed refreshing mint tea, savoring the tranquility and the stunning views. Sipping the warm tea, I felt a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for being able to experience such natural beauty. I made sure to capture a few photos for my blog, hoping to inspire others to embark on their own adventures.
As we descended, we took a different path, offering fresh perspectives of the region. The descent was easier on the lungs but required careful footing to avoid slipping on the loose rocks. By the time we reached the bottom, we were tired but exhilarated, our bodies aching but our spirits soaring.
Back in Chefchaouen, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling it was time for a well-deserved meal. We decided to try Mounir Food, enticed by its convenient location and promising menu.

The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere, and the staff were courteous. I ordered a traditional Moroccan tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices. Daniel opted for the lemon chicken, which he declared was cooked to perfection. While the prices were reasonable, the portions could have been a bit larger. Overall, it was a satisfying meal that replenished our energy after the hike.
Alternatively, we could have considered Restaurant populaire or Hôtel restaurant La fuente.

I heard that Hôtel restaurant La fuente offers delicious Moroccan cuisine at affordable prices, with friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s always good to have options, especially when you’re traveling with a group.
With our bellies full, we strolled through the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen, soaking in the unique atmosphere. We stumbled upon Hibart Souvenirs Shop, a treasure trove of Moroccan craftsmanship.

The shop was filled with handmade items, from intricately designed ceramics to colorful textiles, each reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Morocco.
I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs to take back home. I picked up a beautiful handwoven rug with geometric patterns, a reminder of the vibrant culture we had experienced. Daniel chose a set of hand-painted tagines, planning to try his hand at cooking Moroccan dishes back in Bristol. We also found some unique trinkets and small gifts for our families, wanting to share a piece of Chefchaouen with them.
As we walked back to Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the blue city. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music, creating a magical ambiance. I felt a deep sense of contentment, grateful for the experiences and memories we had created today.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Bab El Ain and Bab Chaouen, two of the city's iconic landmarks. We also intend to visit Café Mundial, a popular bar known for its lively atmosphere. I'm excited to delve deeper into the cultural and historical aspects of Chefchaouen and to experience more of its vibrant nightlife.
Before drifting off to sleep, I reflected on the day's adventures. Hiking Jebel El-Kelaa was a challenging but rewarding experience, offering breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment. The delicious food and souvenir shopping added to the charm of the day, creating a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings as we continue to explore the Blue Pearl of Morocco.
