A Family Cultural Odyssey in Fes
Day 4: A Day Above Fes: History, Views, and Evening Delights
Exploring Fes from above: Discovering museums, ancient tombs, panoramic views, and savoring local cuisine in the heart of Morocco.
Fes from a New Perspective
Today was all about elevating our Fes experience, both literally and figuratively. We traded the labyrinthine alleys of the medina for panoramic viewpoints and historical explorations, offering a fresh appreciation for this ancient city. It was a day of discovery, delicious food, and cherished moments with my family.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fez & Friends. The cafe's cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect spot to fuel up for the day's adventures. Kian was particularly excited about the pancakes, while Greta enjoyed a traditional Moroccan tea. I opted for a strong coffee, knowing we had a lot of ground to cover, or rather, hills to climb.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off towards the Borj Nord Museum. The walk itself was a mini-adventure, navigating through the bustling streets and absorbing the vibrant energy of Fes. As a restorer of historical musical instruments, I always appreciate seeing how different cultures preserve their heritage, and I was eager to explore Morocco's military history.
The Borj Nord Museum, housed in a 16th-century fortress, offered a fascinating glimpse into Morocco's military past.

The museum's collection of weaponry and armor was impressive, spanning from prehistory to the 20th century. I was particularly drawn to the Moroccan arms, many of which were crafted right here in Fes. Kian, of course, was captivated by the cannons, imagining himself as a brave soldier defending the city. Greta, with her librarian's eye for detail, was fascinated by the intricate designs on the ancient swords and shields. I found myself explaining the evolution of musical instruments alongside the weaponry, drawing parallels between the craftsmanship and artistry involved in both.
Sometimes, to truly understand a place, you need to see it from above, to gain a new perspective on its history and its beauty.
After immersing ourselves in military history, we made our way to the Marinid Tombs. The tombs, perched on a hill overlooking the medina, offered a breathtaking panoramic view of Fes. The April sun warmed our faces as we gazed upon the sprawling cityscape, a tapestry of rooftops, minarets, and winding alleyways. It was a moment of tranquility, a chance to appreciate the beauty and grandeur of Fes from a distance.

The Marinid Tombs themselves were a somber reminder of the city's rich history. The skeletal ruins whispered tales of the Marinid dynasty, who ruled over Fes in the 13th century. Although the identities of those buried here remain a mystery, the tombs exuded an aura of reverence and mystery. Kian, ever curious, peppered us with questions about the tombs and the people who built them. Greta, with her knowledge of history, shared stories of the Marinid dynasty and their impact on Fes. I tried to imagine what life was like during their reign, the sounds of the city, the music that filled the air.
From the Marinid Tombs, we soaked in the stunning vista of the medina. The view stretched out before us, an intricate maze of buildings and narrow streets. The setting sun cast a golden glow over the city, accentuating its ancient beauty. It was a truly magical sight, one that will forever be etched in our memories.
After our historical and scenic explorations, it was time for a well-deserved lunch. We headed to Restaurant Ouliya, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant's warm and inviting atmosphere made us feel right at home. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, bursting with fresh flavors and vibrant colors. For our main courses, Greta chose a tagine with chicken and olives, while I opted for the lamb couscous. Kian, surprisingly, devoured a plate of grilled chicken, declaring it the best he'd ever had. The meal was a culinary delight, a true taste of Morocco.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience Fes's nightlife. We ventured to Mezzanine, a bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and live music. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant and convivial atmosphere. We sipped on refreshing drinks while listening to the soulful sounds of a local band. Kian, tired from the day's adventures, eventually fell asleep in Greta's arms, lulled by the music.

Sitting there, surrounded by the sounds of Fes, I felt a deep sense of contentment. Today had been a perfect blend of history, culture, and family time. We had explored ancient sites, savored delicious food, and enjoyed the vibrant energy of the city. As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Fes is a city that captivates the senses and nourishes the soul. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, as we delve deeper into the heart of this enchanting city. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Aben Danan Synagogue, the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), and the iconic Bab Boujloud gate, promising another day filled with cultural discoveries.
The Basketball Africa League's Kalahari Conference is also happening in Morocco, with games in Casablanca and Fes. It would be interesting to catch one of those games sometime during the trip, if we have the opportunity.
As we prepare for another day of exploration, I am reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences and cherishing the moments we share with our loved ones. Fes has already exceeded my expectations, and I am confident that the days ahead will be filled with even more unforgettable memories.
