A Fond Farewell to Fes

As our Moroccan adventure draws to a close, today was all about soaking in the last drops of Fes's vibrant culture and breathtaking views. It's hard to believe our eleven days here are already over; it feels like just yesterday we were marveling at the bustling streets of Casablanca before hopping on the train to this ancient city. Today, we explored historical landmarks, savored delicious meals, and picked up a few last-minute treasures. The warmth of the people and the richness of the culture have left an indelible mark on my heart, and I already know I'll be dreaming of returning someday.

Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Le Coin des Artistes. The atmosphere was charming, and the food was a perfect start to the day. Kian was particularly fond of the pancakes, while Greta enjoyed her mint tea. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the city.

Our first stop was with Salim Fez Guide. Salim, a local guide, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Fes. He showed us hidden gems and shared captivating stories about the city's history and culture. His insights brought the ancient city to life, making our exploration even more meaningful. He speaks so many languages, it was fascinating to listen to him switch between them all.

To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.

Next, we ventured to the Merinide Necropole. Perched on a hill overlooking Fes, this ancient burial ground offered panoramic views of the city. The ruins of the tombs and mausoleums whispered tales of the Merinid dynasty that once ruled Morocco. The vast expanse of the city below, with its labyrinthine alleyways and bustling souks, was a sight to behold. Kian was fascinated by the crumbling structures, imagining the lives of the sultans and princesses buried there.

From the Necropole, we made our way to Bab Boujloud, the iconic Blue Gate of Fes. This stunning gate, adorned with intricate blue and green mosaics, serves as the grand entrance to the Fes el Bali medina. The vibrant blue on one side represents the city, while the green on the other symbolizes Islam. Passing through the gate, we were immediately immersed in the sights, sounds, and smells of the medina. The bustling streets, filled with vendors selling everything from spices to carpets, were a sensory overload in the best possible way. It's fascinating how the sounds of the city change as you pass through the gate. The thrum of traffic fades, replaced by the calls of shopkeepers and the footsteps of countless people.

For lunch, we indulged in a traditional Moroccan feast at Restaurant Darna Fes. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the food was simply divine. We savored tagines, couscous, and an array of flavorful salads. Greta was delighted to find several vegan options, while Kian devoured his chicken tagine with gusto. It was the perfect culinary experience to end our time in Fes.

After lunch, we did some last-minute souvenir shopping at Gift Box. This charming shop offered a variety of unique Moroccan handicrafts and treasures. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted bowl, while Greta found a delicate silver necklace. Kian, of course, chose a colorful fez to remember our adventure. It's these little mementos that will keep the memories of our trip alive long after we've returned home.

Our final dinner in Fes was at La Maison Bleue, a restaurant renowned for its exquisite Moroccan cuisine and elegant ambiance. The restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored riad, with intricate tilework, ornate arches, and a tranquil courtyard. As we dined, we were serenaded by traditional Moroccan music, adding to the magical atmosphere. The food was exceptional, each dish a culinary masterpiece. It was the perfect way to celebrate our time in Fes and bid farewell to this enchanting city.

As I reflect on our eleven days in Fes, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we've shared as a family. From exploring the ancient medina to learning about Moroccan culture and savoring delicious cuisine, this trip has been an unforgettable adventure. I'm especially grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with Greta and Kian, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we prepare for our journey back to Germany. While I'm excited to return home to Bamberg, I know that a part of me will always remain in Fes. The city's vibrant culture, warm hospitality, and stunning beauty have captured my heart. I hope to return someday and continue exploring the wonders of Morocco.

As our time in Morocco comes to an end, I am reminded of the importance of travel and cultural exchange. It is through these experiences that we broaden our perspectives, challenge our assumptions, and connect with people from different backgrounds. I encourage everyone to step outside their comfort zone and explore the world, for it is in these journeys that we truly discover ourselves.

Until next time, Fes. Shukran for the memories.
