Discover the spiritual heart of Meknes through its mausoleums and ancient granaries, revealing the soul of Morocco's imperial past.
Whispers of History in Meknes
Today was a day of deep historical immersion, tracing the echoes of sultans and the ingenuity of ancient architecture. It’s fascinating how much history is layered within these Moroccan cities, each stone telling a story of power, faith, and resilience. Even though Greta couldn’t join me today due to a slight cold, the experience was incredibly profound, and I know she would have appreciated the intricate details and historical context as much as I did. Kian was excited to explore but maybe a bit too young to truly appreciate the historical significance, but his boundless energy definitely added a unique flavor to the day.
Our day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Restaurant Moulay Idriss. The traditional fare of msemen and mint tea set the perfect tone for a day of exploration. It’s amazing how a simple meal can connect you so deeply to a culture. After breakfast, we set out to explore the wonders of Meknes, starting with the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.

Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail: A Sanctuary of Serenity
The Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is a place where reverence hangs heavy in the air. The intricate carvings and delicate zellij tiles that adorned the walls were breathtaking. As non-Muslims, we couldn't enter the tomb room, but the antechamber alone was enough to leave us in awe. Sunlight streamed through the windows high above, illuminating the detailed plasterwork and the central fountain, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow.
The mausoleum is not just a religious site but a testament to Moroccan architectural artistry. The peaceful surroundings invite contemplation, offering a serene escape from the bustling city outside. I found myself reflecting on the life and legacy of Moulay Ismail, a powerful ruler who left an indelible mark on Morocco. The silence within the mausoleum was broken only by the soft murmur of prayers and the shuffling of feet, creating an atmosphere of profound respect and tranquility.
To walk through the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is to step back in time, enveloped by the echoes of a powerful sultan and the artistry of a devoted culture.
Her es-Souani: Echoes of an Imperial Granary
Next on our itinerary was Her es-Souani, an ancient granary and stable complex built by Moulay Ismail. This site was an architectural marvel, designed to store vast quantities of grain and house thousands of horses. The sheer scale of the structure was astounding, and it was hard to imagine the activity that once filled these now-empty halls.

As I wandered through the high-ceilinged rooms, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity of the design. The thick walls and underground cisterns were designed to keep the granary cool, preserving the grain for long periods. It was a testament to the advanced engineering of the time, a stark contrast to the more chaotic political landscape that followed Moulay Ismail's death. The Her es-Souani also includes the House of the Ten Norias, which once supplied water to the palaces using an elaborate system of chained buckets. It’s considered to be centuries ahead of European infrastructure at the time.
The sheer size of the Her es-Souani is a testament to Moulay Ismail's ambition and vision. It served not only as a practical structure for storing resources but also as a symbol of imperial power and wealth. Standing amidst these ruins, I felt a deep connection to the past, imagining the bustling activity and the lives of those who once worked and lived here. Kian was fascinated by the scale of the place, running around and echoing in the vast space.
A Cooperative Venture
In the afternoon, we took a break from the historical sites to visit The Anou Cooperative, a craft store and cultural association that supports local artisans. It was inspiring to see how this cooperative empowers artisans, especially women, by providing a platform to showcase their skills and connect with a broader audience. I was particularly impressed by their commitment to fair trade practices, ensuring that artisans receive fair compensation for their work.

As I browsed the colorful displays of handwoven rugs, exquisite textiles, and beautifully crafted goods, I felt a strong sense of connection to the local community. Each product told a story, reflecting the craftsmanship and artistic essence of Morocco. I purchased a small Berber rug, its intricate patterns a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of this region. It felt good to support local artisans directly, knowing that my purchase would contribute to their livelihoods and help preserve traditional crafts. I am always looking for unique pieces to bring back to Bamberg, and this rug will certainly be a conversation starter.
Culinary Delights
For lunch, we enjoyed a delightful meal at Volubilis, savoring traditional Moroccan cuisine. The tagine was flavorful, and the couscous was light and fluffy – a perfect combination of spices and textures. It was a welcome respite after a morning of exploring historical sites. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot to relax and recharge. The fresh ingredients and traditional recipes provided a true taste of Moroccan culture. I always appreciate how food can be such a powerful way to connect with a place and its people.

As the day drew to a close, we dined at Haytam, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan dishes and warm hospitality. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, reflecting the cultural heritage of Morocco. I opted for the lamb tagine, a local favorite that truly embodied the flavors of the region. The tender lamb, infused with aromatic spices and herbs, was a culinary masterpiece. The mint tea served after the meal was the perfect ending to a satisfying dining experience.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our trip, and we plan to soak in as much of the local culture as possible. Our itinerary includes visiting Place Moulay Hassan and DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN.
