Echoes of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today was a day of deep reflection and sensory indulgence here on the Kumano Kodo. It’s amazing how a place can resonate with history and spirituality while still offering the simple pleasures of delicious food and charming local crafts. I’m so glad I get to share this journey with Greta and Kian, experiencing the profound beauty of Japan together.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kumano Kodo Omotenashi-Kan. This cozy spot offered a delightful start to the day, fueling us up for our exploration. The traditional Japanese breakfast was a wonderful way to immerse ourselves further into the local culture. I always appreciate how food can be such an integral part of understanding a new place. The flavors, the presentation, and the atmosphere all contribute to a deeper connection with the surroundings.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to visit Seiganto-ji Temple. The temple is part of the Kumano Sanzan shrine complex and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple's history stretches back into the mists of time, purposely built near Nachi Falls, a site that may have previously been a place of nature worship. As we approached, the sheer magnificence of the temple against the backdrop of Nachi Falls was breathtaking. The vibrant red of the three-storied pagoda stood out against the lush green landscape, creating a picture-perfect scene. It's one of those views that imprints itself on your memory forever.

Exploring Seiganto-ji was a truly spiritual experience. The air was thick with the scent of incense, and the sound of chanting echoed through the halls. We took our time to wander through the temple grounds, admiring the intricate architecture and the serene atmosphere. Kian was fascinated by the statues and the detailed carvings, asking endless questions about the history and significance of each element. Greta and I were equally captivated, finding ourselves drawn into the peaceful rhythm of the temple. The temple is dedicated to Kannon, and Emperor Kazan visited the Kumano area in 988, declaring the temple one of the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage.

The journey is the destination, and every step along the Kumano Kodo is a step closer to understanding ourselves and the world around us.

After soaking in the spiritual ambiance of Seiganto-ji, we decided to treat ourselves to a well-deserved lunch at Hinoki Steak House. After days of traditional Japanese cuisine, we were in the mood for something a little different, and Hinoki did not disappoint. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and the sides were equally delicious. It was a delightful culinary experience that left us feeling satisfied and content. We even tried some Kumano beef yakiniku donburi which was amazing!

In the afternoon, we ventured into the local shops, eager to find a memento of our time here. We stopped by Triple Kumano Kodo JAPAN. This charming shop was a treasure trove of local crafts and souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-painted fan that I know Greta will adore, and Kian picked out a small wooden toy. It's these little things that bring back the memories of our travels long after we've returned home. I even managed to find a stamp booklet so I can collect stamps along the Kumano Kodo. I found out that the Wakayama Prefecture oversees a stamp program for the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi, Koya Nana Guchi, Kiiji, and Ohechi routes.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at KUMANOYASAI CAFE for dinner. This cozy cafe offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the food was simply divine. We savored every bite, enjoying the quiet ambiance and the company of each other. The owner moved from Tokyo to enjoy the nature and quiet of Kumano and uses locally grown produce in the meals. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery. We even had bagels made with natural yeast!

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the harmonious blend of culture, nature, and spirituality that defines the Kumano Kodo. It's a place where ancient traditions meet modern life, where the past is palpable, and the present is vibrant. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Doro Kyo Gorge, I am filled with anticipation and excitement. I heard there's a nice bar called HANGOVER that I might check out as well. I can't wait to see what wonders await us on the next leg of our journey.

The Kumano Kodo is more than just a pilgrimage route; it's a journey of the soul. As someone who moved from Iran to Germany to pursue my passion, I understand the importance of seeking out places that resonate with your inner self. This trail, with its blend of natural beauty and spiritual significance, has certainly left an indelible mark on me.

Tomorrow, we plan to have breakfast at the Sansaro Cafe before heading out to Doro Kyo Gorge. For lunch, we're thinking of trying the Yunomine Onsen Shop/Dining Hall, and for dinner, Akihei. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the gorge and experiencing more of the natural beauty that this region has to offer. It's these moments, shared with my family, that make all the difference. The experience of old and new is truly something that has opened my eyes, and I'm excited to see what else awaits us on our journey.
