Solo Adventure to the Con Dao Islands
Day 2: Delving into Con Dao's Soul: Palaces, Pagodas, and Peaceful Reflections
Explore Con Dao's historical Island Chief Palace and serene Van Son Pagoda, savoring local flavors and tranquil moments on this solo journey.
A Day of History and Harmony
Today, I embarked on a journey through Con Dao that felt like stepping back in time, while simultaneously finding moments of serene reflection. It was a day of contrasts, exploring both the somber history and the peaceful spirituality that coexist on this island. The weather in December is quite pleasant, with mild temperatures making it comfortable to wander and soak in the surroundings.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Infinity Cafe & Restaurant. The cafe is known for its inviting atmosphere and a menu that blends Asian and European flavors. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese coffee to kickstart my explorations. While some reviews suggest the European dishes might not be the cafe's strongest suit, I found the coffee to be robust and the perfect fuel for the day ahead. The cafe's central location made it a convenient starting point before venturing out to explore the island's historical and cultural landmarks.

First on the itinerary was the Island Chief Palace.
History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
As I approached the palace, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gravity. The architecture, dating back to the late 19th century, is a testament to the island's colonial past. The palace, also known as the Governor's Mansion, served as the residence and workplace for 53 governors of Con Dao from 1862 to 1975. Stepping inside, I was immediately transported back in time. The museum within the palace houses a collection of artifacts and exhibits that chronicle Con Dao's history, including its role during the French colonial era and the Vietnam War.

Each room offered a glimpse into the lives of those who once inhabited this place, from the lavish lifestyle of the governors to the stark contrast with the harsh conditions endured by the prisoners on the island. The original furnishings, including a billiard table and intricately carved wooden furniture, provided a tangible connection to the past. The palace is located on Ton Duc Thang Street, making it easily accessible. The palace is a Special National Monument since 2012. Wandering through the rooms, I tried to imagine what life must have been like for those who lived and worked within these walls. The weight of history was palpable, a reminder of the island's complex and often tragic past.
Leaving the Island Chief Palace, I felt a need for a change of pace, a moment of tranquility to balance the somber reflections on history. My next stop was Van Son Pagoda. Nestled halfway up Mot Mountain, about 1.6 km from Con Son town, the pagoda offered a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the town.

The history of Van Son Pagoda is intertwined with the island's story. Originally built in 1964 during the Vietnam War, it served as a spiritual site for soldiers and government officials. Ironically, prisoners from Phu Hai Prison were forced to carry materials for its construction. In December 2011, the pagoda underwent a complete restoration, becoming a symbol of resilience and devotion. As I climbed the steps to the pagoda, I was struck by the sense of peace that permeated the air. The architecture reflects traditional Vietnamese Buddhist design, blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings.
The pagoda complex covers a large area, featuring key religious and architectural elements. Inside, the intricate carvings and traditional motifs showcased the region's cultural and religious heritage. The main hall enshrines Shakyamuni Buddha, Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, and Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha. From the temple courtyard, I was treated to a panoramic view of Con Son Bay, with its scattered islets rising from the emerald waters. It was a breathtaking sight, a moment of pure serenity that washed away the weight of the morning's historical explorations. Van Son Pagoda is not only a place of worship but also a spiritual sanctuary for those seeking peace.
For lunch, I decided to try Nhà hàng Poulo Condore. While I haven't booked a stay at the Poulo Condor Boutique Resort & Spa, I was eager to sample the cuisine at their restaurant. The restaurant serves Vietnamese and international dishes.

After a satisfying lunch, I took some time to wander through Con Son town, soaking in the local atmosphere. The town is a mix of old and new, with traditional Vietnamese architecture blending with modern shops and cafes. I enjoyed observing the daily life of the locals, their interactions, and the rhythm of their routines. It was a reminder that Con Dao is not just a historical site but a living, breathing community.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself at ULA Restaurant & Bar Con Dao for dinner. This spot is known for its beach bar ambiance and delicious Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant's design embraces open spaces and beach vibes, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. I savored the grilled shrimp with its exquisite marinade and the light, crunchy fried silken tofu. The beef satay skewers were also a highlight, tender and perfectly cooked. The friendly service and tasty cocktails added to the overall delightful experience. ULA Bar also offers a menu of 12 different cocktails representing the 12 zodiac signs.
