Con Dao's Coastal Charms
Another day, another adventure unfolds here in the Con Dao Islands! As a restorer of historical musical instruments, I find a unique harmony between preserving the past and exploring new landscapes. Today was a blend of natural beauty and tranquil reflection, perfectly capturing the essence of this Vietnamese paradise. The weather in December is quite pleasant, with mild temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities. I'm eager to share my experiences as I continue to uncover the island's hidden gems.
My morning began with a delightful breakfast at An Ơi Cafe & Restaurant. This charming spot, run by a mother-daughter team, exudes a cozy and inviting atmosphere. It felt like stepping into someone's home, with lush greenery surrounding the outdoor seating area. I savored their famous wholewheat bread, which was indeed as delicious as the reviews suggested. Paired with a strong Vietnamese coffee, it was the perfect way to kickstart my day. I made a mental note to bring Greta and Kian here someday; they would absolutely love the healthy and fresh options.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to explore Hòn Bảy Cạnh, an island known for its diverse marine life and pristine beaches. The boat ride was smooth, and the sea was a mesmerizing shade of turquoise. As we approached the island, I was struck by its untouched beauty. The island is a protected area with tropical forests and mangrove forests.

Hòn Bảy Cạnh, the second largest island in the Con Dao archipelago, is named for its seven beaches that form a polygon shape. The island is a protected area, encompassing 683 ha of tropical forest with rare species and mangrove forests. Cat Lon beach is one of the 14 places where green sea turtles come to lay eggs during the breeding season. Unfortunately, I am visiting outside of the breeding season.
I spent a few hours snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, marveling at the vibrant coral reefs and colorful fish. The underwater world here is truly spectacular, a testament to the island's commitment to conservation. It was so peaceful being surrounded by the gentle sounds of the ocean, a world away from the bustling city life I'm accustomed to. I thought about Kian and how he would be mesmerized by the marine life; I must bring him back here to experience this firsthand.
The beauty of Con Dao lies not only in its landscapes but also in its ability to offer moments of profound peace and connection with nature.
After my aquatic adventures, I hiked to the island's lighthouse, a relic from the French era. The climb was a bit challenging, but the panoramic view from the top was well worth the effort. The vista stretched out before me, encompassing the vast expanse of the ocean and the neighboring islands. It was a breathtaking sight, and I spent a few moments simply soaking it all in. I took several photographs, hoping to capture the essence of this stunning landscape to share with Greta and Kian.
Back on the main island, I decided to visit Mũi Cá Mập, or Shark Cape, a prominent landmark known for its dramatic rock formations and scenic views. As I approached the cape, I was struck by the rugged beauty of the coastline. The waves crashed against the rocks, creating a symphony of sound and motion. I spent some time exploring the area, taking in the breathtaking vistas of the ocean and the surrounding landscape.

Mũi Cá Mập, adjacent to Bãi Nhát, is a small island with a large mass of land jutting out into the sea, resembling a shark. The scenery is both natural and harmonious, with graceful curves creating a beautiful natural setting.
The name 'Shark Cape' is quite fitting, as the land juts out into the sea like a small shark. The beauty here is raw and untamed, a perfect blend of mountains, rivers, and sea. I found a quiet spot to sit and reflect, watching the sun slowly descend towards the horizon. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, painting a picture of unparalleled beauty.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I stopped by Takai Mart Côn Đảo to pick up a few essentials. This supermarket is a hub for both locals and tourists, offering a wide range of products from fresh produce to local snacks. I enjoyed browsing the aisles, discovering new and interesting items. It’s always fascinating to see what everyday life is like in a different culture. I grabbed a few local delicacies to bring back to Germany, hoping to share a taste of Con Dao with my family.

As evening approached, I made my way to Kwai's Bistro Con Dao for dinner. This bistro is known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere and its delicious Vietnamese cuisine. The bistro combines a restaurant and bar, with a modern and youthful style. I ordered a seafood dish, eager to savor the fresh flavors of the ocean. The meal was exquisite, a perfect blend of local spices and fresh ingredients. The staff was incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home.

The bistro is located in the town center, with a cozy and intimate setting, perfect for relaxing with a cool cocktail. The outdoor space on the second floor is popular in the afternoons and evenings, offering a great spot to watch the sunset.
After dinner, I took a leisurely stroll along the beach, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. The sky was clear, and the stars twinkled above me. It was a perfect end to a perfect day. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Con Dao. I am also reminded of the history of the island, and the museum which I plan to visit soon.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Dat Tham Beach and see the Vietnam Heritage Tree. I also plan to visit Sunset Lounge. I am excited for what tomorrow will bring!
As I prepared for sleep, I thought about the day's adventures and the beauty I had witnessed. Con Dao is more than just a destination; it is an experience that touches the soul. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this hidden gem and share its wonders with the world.
Until tomorrow, good night from Con Dao.
