Solo Adventure to the Con Dao Islands
Day 6: Reflections at Con Dao: A Day of Remembrance and Culinary Delights
Exploring Con Dao's poignant history and savoring its local flavors on a day of reflection and culinary discovery.
Echoes of the Past, Tastes of the Present
Today was a day of deep reflection, a journey into the soul of Con Dao, intertwined with the vibrant flavors of Vietnamese cuisine. It’s a delicate balance, honoring the past while embracing the present, and I found myself moved by the resilience and spirit of this island.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Julia's Garden - Cafe and Dining. The cafe is tucked away, a little haven surrounded by lush greenery. I enjoyed a strong Vietnamese coffee, the perfect fuel for the day ahead, while cats played around me. It was a peaceful start, a moment to gather my thoughts before delving into the island's more somber history. I made a mental note to bring Greta and Kian here one day; Kian would especially love the cats.

My first stop was the Vo Thi Sau Hero Grave. Vo Thi Sau, a name synonymous with courage and patriotism, is a national heroine. Visiting her grave was a deeply moving experience. The atmosphere was thick with respect, as locals and tourists alike came to pay their respects. Fresh flowers adorned the site, a testament to her enduring legacy. I learned about her story, her bravery in the face of French colonial rule, and her execution at the young age of 19. It was a stark reminder of the sacrifices made for the country's independence.

From there, I walked to Hang Duong Cemetery, the final resting place for thousands of Vietnamese prisoners who perished in Con Son's prisons. The sheer scale of the cemetery is overwhelming, a vast expanse of graves stretching across the landscape. Many of the graves are unmarked, a poignant reminder of the countless unknown souls who suffered here. Walking through the rows, I felt a profound sense of sadness and respect. The cemetery is a place of pilgrimage, a site of remembrance for those who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom. The December air was heavy with humidity, and the silence was broken only by the rustling of leaves and the occasional whisper of prayers.

Visiting these sites is a powerful reminder that history is not just dates and facts, but stories of human courage, resilience, and sacrifice.
After such a heavy morning, I needed a change of pace. I headed to Vietnamese By The Market for lunch. This charming restaurant, known for its authentic Vietnamese dishes, was just what I needed. I ordered pho, a classic Vietnamese noodle soup, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a welcome contrast to the somber atmosphere of the morning. The restaurant itself was bustling with locals and tourists, all enjoying the simple pleasures of good food and good company. It was a reminder that life goes on, even in the face of great hardship.

In the late afternoon, with the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, I found myself drawn to the Wine & Coffee Bar Côn Đảo House. I decided to treat myself to a glass of local wine. The bar had a relaxed, inviting atmosphere, and I struck up a conversation with a local who shared stories about the island's history and culture. It was fascinating to hear his perspective, to learn about the island through his eyes. He spoke of the past with reverence, but also with a sense of hope for the future.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Nhà Hàng Bến Cảng - Seafood Restaurant for dinner. Located near the harbor, this restaurant is renowned for its fresh seafood and stunning views. I indulged in a grilled fish, caught that very day, and it was simply divine. The restaurant was alive with activity, families and friends gathering to share a meal and enjoy the evening air. The sounds of laughter and conversation filled the air, a joyful celebration of life.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Con Dao is a place of contrasts. It is an island of immense beauty, with pristine beaches and lush forests. But it is also an island of profound sorrow, a place where thousands suffered and died. It is a place where the past is ever-present, a reminder of the human capacity for both cruelty and compassion. And yet, it is also a place of hope, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Bãi Nhát and Di tích Bãi Sọ Người. Bãi Nhát, I hear, is a beach known for its stunning sunsets, and Di tích Bãi Sọ Người is another historical site, a place of somber remembrance. I also intend to try MAY BISTRO for breakfast, Quán Cơm Su Su for lunch, and Con Son Seafood restaurant for dinner. Before that, I will make a stop at Hin Beautytips - Mỹ Phẩm, Phụ Kiện, Quần Áo, Nước Hoa Côn Đảo - Mi Pham Con Dao - Hin Cosmetic to get Greta a small gift.
Con Dao has a humid climate in December, with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 29°C. The weather is generally pleasant, with occasional short rain showers.
As I prepare for another day on this captivating island, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to learn, to reflect, and to connect with the people and the history of Con Dao. It is a journey that I will carry with me long after I leave this island paradise. Perhaps I'll even find some sheet music related to the island’s history to bring back to my workshop in Bamberg.
I think I’ll skip the Wine & Coffee Bar tonight and head back to my guesthouse for an early night. Tomorrow promises to be another day of exploration and discovery, and I want to be well-rested and ready for whatever adventures await.
