Solo Adventure to the Con Dao Islands
Day 7: Whispers of the Past and Sunset Serenity in Con Dao
Exploring Con Dao's poignant history at Bãi Sọ Người & basking in the serene beauty of Bãi Nhát. A day of reflection & natural wonders.
Echoes of History, Hues of Sunset
Today, on the seventh day of my solo journey through the Con Dao Islands, I found myself drawn to places where the echoes of the past meet the vibrant beauty of the present. It was a day of contrasts, a poignant reminder of the islands' complex history juxtaposed against the stunning natural landscapes that define their allure.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at MAY BISTRO. The bistro had a cozy atmosphere, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. After breakfast, I decided to immerse myself in the local culture with a visit to Hin Beautytips - Mỹ Phẩm , Phụ Kiện , Quần Áo , Nước Hoa Côn Đảo - Mi Pham Con Dao - Hin Cosmetic. While not my usual haunt, it was interesting to see the local beauty and fashion scene, a slice of modern life amidst the historical backdrop of Con Dao.
My contemplation led me to a profound quote:
Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that carry the heaviest stories.
The next stop was Di tích Bãi Sọ Người, or the 'Relic of the Beach of Skulls'. This site, located near the former 'Cow Shed' isolated area, stands as a stark reminder of the brutal history of Con Dao Prison. It's a place where countless prisoners lost their lives, and it served as the first cemetery on the island. Walking through this area, I felt a deep sense of sorrow and respect for those who suffered here. The stories of resilience and resistance in the face of unimaginable cruelty are etched into the very soil of this place. It was a sobering experience, one that underscored the importance of remembering the past to build a better future.

After such a heavy experience, I needed a change of scenery. I headed to Bãi Nhát, a beach known for its unique beauty. What makes Bãi Nhát special is that it's a beach that appears and disappears with the tide. Fortunately, the tide was out when I arrived, revealing a stunning stretch of sand framed by dramatic cliffs.

Bãi Nhát is also renowned as one of the best spots on the island to watch the sunset. As the sun began its descent, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The golden light illuminated the beach, casting long shadows and creating a magical atmosphere. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to reflect on the day's experiences and appreciate the simple beauty of nature. From Bãi Nhát, I could see Đỉnh Tình Yêu, or 'Love Peak,' a mountain that resembles a couple embracing. The sight added a touch of romance to the already breathtaking scene.
For lunch, I stopped at Quán Cơm Su Su, a local favorite known for its delicious and affordable food. I enjoyed a traditional Vietnamese meal, savoring the fresh flavors and simple preparations. It was a comforting and satisfying experience, a reminder of the importance of good food in connecting with a culture.

As evening approached, I made my way to Con Son Seafood restaurant for dinner. Being an island, Con Dao is renowned for its fresh seafood, and this restaurant did not disappoint. I indulged in a variety of dishes, from grilled fish to sautéed shrimp, each prepared with local spices and herbs. The meal was a delightful culinary experience, a perfect ending to a day of exploration and reflection.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Hòn Tre Lớn and Sở Rẫy, continuing my exploration of the natural and historical sites of Con Dao. I'm also looking forward to trying TYNA FOOD & COFFEE for breakfast, Nhà hàng Poulo Condore for lunch, and Nhà Hàng Bến Cảng - Seafood Restaurant for dinner. And perhaps, I'll unwind at the Sea sense bar and grill in the evening.
My thoughts drift back to my family, Greta and Kian. I imagine telling them stories of the somber Bãi Sọ Người and the vibrant sunset at Bãi Nhát. I know Kian would be fascinated by the beach that disappears, and Greta would appreciate the historical significance of the island.
As I sit here, writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique and compelling destination. Con Dao is a place that challenges and inspires, a place where the past and present intertwine to create an unforgettable travel experience.
One thing I did forget to pack was a portable phone charger. That would have been useful today. Luckily, I had my trusty travel journal to record my thoughts.
The Con Dao Islands continue to surprise and inspire me. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings.
