Tilcara's Hidden Gems: A Day of Discovery

Today was a day of unexpected discoveries and delightful surprises here in Tilcara. I set out with a vague plan, but as always, the day unfolded in ways I couldn't have predicted, revealing the unique charm and artistic spirit of this captivating town. I'm finding that the best travel experiences often come from simply wandering and being open to whatever comes your way.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at El Antigal de Tilcara Hostería y Restaurante. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Argentine flavors were too inviting to resist. I savored a delicious breakfast, fueling up for a day of exploration. I must admit, their medialunas were delightful, and the coffee was just what I needed to kickstart my day. It reminded me of the breakfasts Greta and I used to enjoy back in Bamberg, though I certainly missed having them with me.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I decided to visit the Mirador del auto destrozado, a viewpoint I'd heard about. The name, which translates to the viewpoint of the wrecked car, intrigued me. The journey there was a bit rough, the road winding and uneven, but the scenery was worth it. As I climbed higher, the views of the valley became more and more breathtaking. The landscape was rugged and beautiful, painted in shades of brown, green, and ochre. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of dry earth and distant rain. When I finally reached the mirador, I understood the name. There, perched on the edge of the cliff, was a burnt-out car, a strange and somewhat haunting sight against the stunning backdrop.

Sometimes, the most unexpected sights offer the most profound perspectives.

It was a stark reminder of the passage of time and the stories that landscapes hold. I spent some time there, taking photos and simply soaking in the view. The vastness of the landscape made me feel small, but also connected to something larger than myself. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to reflect on my journey and the beauty of the world around me. I imagined Kian would have loved the car, though Greta would have been more interested in the panoramic views.

After the mirador, I sought out the UTAMA taller de ceramica y pintura de Haro Galli. I had read about Haro Galli, a renowned local artist, and his workshop, and I was eager to see his work firsthand. Finding the workshop was an adventure in itself, as it was tucked away in a quiet corner of Tilcara. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the vibrant colors and whimsical characters that filled the space. Haro Galli's art is deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of the region, depicting scenes of everyday life, festivals, and celebrations. His style is unique and captivating, blending folk art with a touch of social commentary. I spent hours wandering through the workshop, admiring his paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. I even had the chance to chat with one of Haro Galli's sons, who shared stories about his father's life and work. It was fascinating to learn about the inspiration behind his art and the techniques he uses to create his distinctive style. The workshop itself was a work of art, a chaotic but inspiring space filled with the tools of his trade and the energy of his creative spirit. They also had a small organic winery.

For lunch, I ventured to El quincho parrilla, a restaurant known for its traditional Argentine asado. The aroma of grilled meat wafted through the air, drawing me in. I ordered a generous portion of asado, which came with a side of papines, small local potatoes. The meat was tender and flavorful, cooked to perfection over an open flame. The papines were equally delicious, seasoned with herbs and spices that gave them a unique taste. The portions were so generous that I could barely finish my plate, but I savored every bite. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with live Andean music adding to the ambiance. It was a perfect setting to relax and enjoy a leisurely lunch, soaking in the local culture. I overheard some travelers raving about the chorizo and asado de cabrito.

In the afternoon, I explored Tienda ariel, a local shop that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the region through its clothing and accessories. I was drawn to the colorful ponchos, intricately woven scarves, and unique jewelry, all handcrafted by local artisans. The shop was a treasure trove of unique finds, and I spent hours browsing through the displays. I ended up buying a beautiful scarf for Greta, a small reminder of our travels together. The shop owner was incredibly friendly and shared stories about the history and craftsmanship behind each item. It was more than just a shopping experience; it was a cultural immersion, a chance to connect with the local community and support their traditions.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to PARRILLADA LA TILCAREÑA for dinner. This family-owned restaurant is known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere and its authentic Argentine cuisine. I decided to try their specialty, cordero a la cruz con papas criollas, lamb cooked on a cross with local potatoes. The dish was a culinary masterpiece, the lamb tender and juicy, infused with the smoky flavor of the grill. The papas criollas were equally delicious, roasted to perfection and seasoned with local herbs. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a great value for the quality of the food. The restaurant was filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the delicious food and the lively atmosphere. It was a perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery. The restaurant also features folklore music, adding to the authentic experience.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Monolito al Trópico De Capricornio Paralelo and Plazoleta Antenor Sajama. I might also check out SARA-SISA Bar Café Cervecería for a drink in the evening.

Today was a reminder that the best travel experiences are often the ones that are unplanned, the ones that unfold as you wander and explore, open to whatever comes your way. Tilcara has a way of surprising you, of revealing its hidden gems and artistic spirit. I'm grateful for the chance to experience its unique charm and to connect with its vibrant culture. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. This trip has been a wonderful experience, and I'm already looking forward to sharing my stories with Greta and Kian. Perhaps we can all come back together someday and explore this beautiful region as a family.
