Following the Sun's Path in Tilcara
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a quiet immersion into the heart of Tilcara. It wasn't about rushing from one landmark to another, but rather about savoring the moments and letting the spirit of this place seep into my soul. As I reflect on the day, I realize it was a perfect blend of geographical significance, local culture, and, of course, the delightful flavors of Argentina.
My morning began with the promise of a hearty breakfast at Parrilla Lo de Nico. The reviews online spoke of a delightful experience, and I was eager to start my day with some authentic Argentine flavors. As I stepped inside, the aroma of grilled meats filled the air, instantly making my stomach rumble. Though Parrilla Lo de Nico is known for its 'parrillada', I opted for a lighter breakfast to ease into the day. The warm hospitality of Nico himself made the experience even more special. It felt less like dining at a restaurant and more like being welcomed into someone's home. The place had a cozy, lived-in feel, with music playing softly in the background, creating a relaxed atmosphere. I learned that Nico no longer operates the grill full-time, but he still maintains the location, offering a taste of local life and culture to those who seek it out.
Fueled and ready, I set out to visit the Monolito al Trópico de Capricornio Paralelo. The monolith itself isn't just a stone; it's a marker of a significant geographical boundary, a place where the sun's journey reaches a turning point. Standing there, I felt a strange connection to the earth, a sense of being part of something larger than myself. The landscape was starkly beautiful, the mountains rising in the distance, their colors shifting with the angle of the sun. It was a moment for contemplation, a chance to reflect on my journey so far and the adventures yet to come. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of the high-altitude desert. I took several photographs, trying to capture the essence of the place, but I knew that no image could truly convey the feeling of standing on that spot.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.
Next on my itinerary was the Plazoleta Antenor Sajama, a small square that serves as a local gathering place. It was quieter than I expected, perhaps because it was a Monday, but it offered a glimpse into the everyday life of Tilcara. Children played, locals chatted, and the world moved at a slower pace. I sat on a bench, watching the scene unfold, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. It reminded me of the small squares in Khowrzuq, my hometown, where life also unfolds at a leisurely pace. Though I miss Kian and Greta, I feel a sense of belonging here in Tilcara. I am so grateful that Greta encourages me to take these trips for myself. It is important to nurture my soul.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurante Yacoraite, enticed by its promise of traditional Argentine cuisine. The restaurant had a rustic charm, with decor that reflected the region's cultural heritage. I decided to try the locro, a hearty stew that I had heard so much about. It was a rich, flavorful dish, filled with local ingredients and spices. It was the perfect meal to warm me from the inside out. The staff were friendly and attentive, making me feel welcome and comfortable. I learned that Yacoraite refers to hidden water in the Quechua language. The restaurant is committed to showcasing the flavors of the region, using local ingredients and traditional recipes. I savored every bite, knowing that I was experiencing a true taste of Argentina.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to SARA-SISA Bar Café Cervecería, a local spot known for its craft beers and welcoming atmosphere. I am not a huge beer drinker, but I thought it would be fun to check it out. The bar was lively, filled with locals and tourists alike. I struck up a conversation with a friendly bartender who was passionate about the local beer scene. He offered me a tasting of several different brews, each with its own unique flavor and character. It was a fun and educational experience, and I left with a newfound appreciation for Argentine craft beer. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and it felt like a place where everyone was welcome. I enjoyed hearing the stories of other travelers, each with their own unique perspective on the world.

For dinner, I decided to indulge in the culinary delights of Senador Tilcara. The restaurant is known for its authentic South American cuisine and romantic ambiance. I had heard rave reviews about their llama stew, so I knew I had to try it. The stew was rich and flavorful, the llama meat tender and succulent. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable. The restaurant itself was beautiful, with different rooms to sit in, each with its own unique charm. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery. I paired my meal with a glass of Antropo Malbec reserva, a local wine that perfectly complemented the flavors of the stew. Senador Tilcara is dedicated to providing a memorable dining experience, ensuring that every meal is prepared with care and expertise.

As I walked back to my accommodation, the stars were out in full force, their brilliance amplified by the clear mountain air. I felt a sense of contentment wash over me, a feeling of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Tilcara had welcomed me with open arms, offering a glimpse into its rich culture and stunning landscapes. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, with plans to visit Cumbre EL.CONO, TILCARA, and Camino a la Garganta del Diablo. But for now, I will drift off to sleep, dreaming of llamas, locro, and the magic of the Andes.
I made a mental note to buy a Spanish phrasebook tomorrow at Sahien, so I can better communicate with the locals. And I will definitely need sunscreen for tomorrow's hike!
