Day 7: Echoes of Time: Exploring Tilcara's Ancient Wonders
Journey through Tilcara's history: Discover the Castillos de Huichaira, cross the iconic Puente de Hierro, and savor local flavors.
Whispers of the Past
Today was a day of diving deeper into the heart of Tilcara, a journey not just through space, but through time. It's fascinating how a single day can be filled with so many different experiences, each leaving its own unique mark. From exploring ancient ruins to savoring the local cuisine, Tilcara continues to surprise and enchant me at every turn.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at La Chakana Parrilla. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the strong, rich coffee were the perfect start to fuel a day of exploration. I enjoyed a simple yet delicious breakfast of toast with local marmalade and a strong café con leche, soaking in the cozy atmosphere of the parrilla before heading out [i].
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards the Castillos de Huichaira. The morning air was crisp and invigorating, a stark contrast to the warmth I'd left behind in Bamberg. The Castillos are located a short distance from Tilcara, near the village of Sumaj Pacha. The walk itself was an adventure, a trek of almost 3 kilometers along what is usually the riverbed of the Huichaira River. Fortunately, it was dry, which made the hike easier, though the uneven stones required careful footing. The altitude, around 2,500 meters, added a layer of challenge, reminding me to pace myself and breathe deeply.
The landscape was breathtaking. Surrounded by towering vanilla-colored hills, the unique geoformations that give the Castillos de Huichaira their name started to appear in the distance. They truly do resemble medieval castles, standing proudly against the skyline. I spent a couple of hours exploring the area, taking photos and simply marveling at the natural beauty. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional chirping of birds and the whisper of the wind. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to disconnect from the world and connect with nature.

The land remembers what we forget.
After my hike, I decided to grab lunch at Kactus, a local restaurant known for its traditional Andean cuisine. I ordered a plate of humitas, a savory corn cake steamed in corn husks, and a refreshing glass of chicha morada, a sweet beverage made from purple corn. The flavors were exquisite, a true taste of the region [i].
Next on my list was the Puente de Hierro, an old iron bridge that spans the Huasamayo River. It's a structure with a lot of history, dating back to the late 19th century when it was part of the railway line. The bridge offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, and it's a popular spot for photographers. I took some time to admire the architecture and capture the scenery from different angles. It was fascinating to imagine the trains that once crossed this bridge, carrying goods and people to and from Tilcara.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Tierra Andina Bar for a well-deserved drink. The bar had a cozy, rustic atmosphere, with local musicians playing traditional Andean music. I ordered a glass of Torrontés, a crisp white wine that's native to Argentina, and sat back to enjoy the music and the company of other travelers [i].

For dinner, I chose La Peña de Rolito, a restaurant known for its lively atmosphere and traditional peña performances. I indulged in a hearty plate of locro, a thick stew made with corn, beans, potatoes, and meat, while enjoying the music and dance. The energy in the restaurant was infectious, and it was a perfect way to end the day [i].

Tonight, as I reflect on the day's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Tilcara. Each place I visited today told a story, a piece of the region's rich history. The Castillos de Huichaira whispered tales of ancient landscapes, the Puente de Hierro echoed with the sounds of a bygone era, and the local restaurants offered a taste of the region's culinary heritage.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Tilcara's hidden gems, including the Mirador del auto destrozado and the UTAMA taller de ceramica y pintura de Haro Galli. I'm also looking forward to visiting Tienda ariel, a local shop, and trying the local cuisine at El Antigal de Tilcara Hostería y Restaurante, El quincho parrilla, and PARRILLADA LA TILCAREÑA. Each day here is a new adventure, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
This trip is a reminder that the world is full of incredible places and experiences, waiting to be discovered. It's a privilege to be able to share these moments with you, and I hope that my stories inspire you to embark on your own adventures. Perhaps, one day, our paths will cross in a far-off land, and we can share a glass of Torrontés under the Andean sky.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I realize that I forgot to pack sunscreen and a Spanish phrasebook. I'll try to find them tomorrow.
Tilcara is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the present moment. It's a place where the past and the present coexist, creating a unique and magical atmosphere. It's a place that I will never forget.
