A Day of Discovery

Today was a day of unexpected encounters and delightful surprises here on Naoshima. I set out with a vague plan, a fully charged camera, and an open mind, ready to absorb whatever the island had to offer. It turned out to be a day where art wasn't confined to the pristine walls of museums but spilled onto the streets, into the local eateries, and even the unassuming convenience stores.

My morning started with a hearty breakfast at Tee's DELI GROCERY. I was in the mood for a taste of home, so I went for a falafel sandwich. It was a surprisingly delightful experience. The falafel was perfectly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and the combination of fresh vegetables and tangy sauce made it a truly satisfying start to the day. It's a cozy little spot, and I overheard a couple of locals chatting about the upcoming Setouchi Triennale in 2025. It seems the whole island is buzzing with anticipation.

Fueled up and ready to go, I headed towards the Benesse House Area East Gate. I wanted to explore the outdoor sculptures and installations that dot the landscape around the Benesse House complex. The sun was shining, and the air was filled with the sound of cicadas, creating a peaceful atmosphere. As I wandered through the area, I stumbled upon several thought-provoking pieces. One that particularly caught my eye was a series of stone sculptures that seemed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. It reminded me of some of the land art I've seen back in Denmark, and it made me think about the relationship between art and nature.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on my list was Miyanoura Gallery 6. This unassuming gallery is housed in a former pachinko parlor. The transformation of such a space into a hub for art and culture is fascinating. The current exhibition, Setouchi Archive, showcases rotating exhibits that document various aspects of the region's history. I spent a good hour browsing through old photographs, maps, and documents, learning about the island's past. It was a humbling experience, connecting with the lives of the people who have called Naoshima home for generations.

For lunch, I decided to try Cin.na.mon, a restaurant near Miyanoura Port. I had heard good things about their Naoshima seafood curry, and I was eager to give it a try. The restaurant had a funky, eclectic vibe, with traditional tatami rooms and a lively atmosphere. The curry was indeed delicious, brimming with fresh seafood and a hint of citrus. It was lighter than your typical Japanese curry, and the side pickles added a refreshing touch. I washed it down with a local Naoshima beer, savoring the flavors and the moment.

After lunch, I made my way to maimai, a burger shop known for its Hamachi (Japanese amberjack) burgers. The shop itself is quite quirky, converted from an outdoor garage. The Naoshima Burger was the perfect choice. The burger featured a special tartar sauce made with local fish and olives. I enjoyed my burger on the terrace, listening to some music and soaking up the laid-back atmosphere.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I made a quick stop at the 7-Eleven Naoshima Shop. Even mundane tasks like grabbing a bottle of water become interesting when you're surrounded by art. I couldn't help but smile as I saw a group of tourists admiring a sculpture in front of the convenience store.

Today was a reminder that art isn't just something you find in museums; it's woven into the fabric of everyday life. It's in the flavors of the local cuisine, the quirky architecture, and the way people interact with their surroundings. Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire me, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience its unique charm.

As I reflect on the day, I realize how much I appreciate traveling solo. It allows me to be more present, more open to unexpected encounters, and more attuned to the nuances of the local culture. I remember something Astrid once told me, about how travel is not just about seeing new places, but about seeing the world with new eyes. That's exactly what Naoshima is doing for me.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Yokobou Park and the Honmura Lounge & Archive, followed by the Benesse House Museum. I also plan to visit Bar SARU in the evening. I'm looking forward to another day of artistic exploration and cultural immersion.

And I really need to remember to buy sunscreen tomorrow!

Until then, goodnight from Naoshima.
