A Day of Discovery in Honmura

Today was a day of quiet revelations, a gentle unfolding of Naoshima's artistic soul. I set out to explore Honmura, the island's charming village, with a sense of anticipation, eager to delve deeper into the art that permeates every corner of this unique place. The morning sun cast long shadows as I left My Lodge Naoshima, a reminder of the simple pleasures that this solo journey offers. I was particularly looking forward to seeing how Ando's architectural philosophy was captured in a traditional Japanese house, and to experience the blend of Shinto and contemporary art at Go'o Shrine.

My first stop was Little Plum for breakfast. It was a quaint little place, and I enjoyed a simple meal of toast and coffee, watching the locals start their day. The air was filled with the quiet murmur of conversations and the clinking of cups, a comforting soundtrack to the beginning of my artistic explorations. I made a mental note to buy some sunscreen later at Art Island Center, remembering my oversight from the previous days.

Ando Museum: A Dialogue Between Tradition and Modernity

The Ando Museum was an intriguing experience. From the outside, it appeared to be a traditional Japanese house, blending seamlessly into the Honmura district. However, stepping inside was like entering another world. The interior was a masterful blend of traditional wooden architecture and Ando's signature concrete style.

The museum wasn't just a display of Ando's work; it was an embodiment of his architectural philosophy. Photographs, sketches, and models documented his projects on Naoshima and elsewhere, offering insights into his creative process. I was particularly fascinated by how he integrated light and space, creating a sense of harmony between the old and the new. The museum itself felt like a work of art, a testament to Ando's ability to transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences. The exposed concrete breathed new life into the old wooden structure, showcasing a condensed taste of Ando's architectural philosophy. It was a dialogue between past and present, wood and concrete, light and darkness.

Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.

I spent a good hour wandering through the museum, absorbing the atmosphere and reflecting on Ando's vision. His ability to find beauty in simplicity and to create spaces that inspire contemplation is truly remarkable. It reminded me of the countless hours I've spent restoring antique furniture, carefully preserving the past while giving it new life. Just as Ando blends concrete with traditional Japanese houses, I try to harmonize modern techniques with the original craftsmanship of each piece I restore.

Art House Project: Go'o Shrine – A Spiritual Ascent

Next on my itinerary was the Art House Project, specifically Go'o Shrine. This involved a bit of a climb, but the views overlooking Honmura and the sea were worth every step. The Go'o Shrine is part of the Art House Project, where contemporary artists transform traditional houses into art installations. Unlike the other art houses, Go'o Shrine wasn't a house but a Shinto shrine, offering a unique blend of spirituality and contemporary art.

Hiroshi Sugimoto's Appropriate Proportion was a captivating experience. The glass staircase leading down from the shrine was both beautiful and thought-provoking. The sunlight filtering through the glass created an ethereal glow, evoking a sense of the sacred. It was a clever play with light and perspective, inviting contemplation on the relationship between nature, spirituality, and art. The shrine itself was simple yet elegant, a testament to the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture. The juxtaposition of the old and the new, the natural and the artificial, was both jarring and harmonious. It was a reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places, and that tradition and modernity can coexist in surprising ways.

The climb to the shrine was physically demanding, but it was also a spiritual ascent. The panoramic views from the top were breathtaking, offering a sense of perspective and tranquility. I spent some time simply sitting on a bench, soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on the beauty of the island. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to connect with nature and to appreciate the artistry of the human spirit. I thought of Astrid and Lasse, imagining how much they would have enjoyed this view.

Lunch at Cin.na.mon: A Culinary Interlude

By now, my stomach was beginning to rumble, so I decided to head to Cin.na.mon for lunch. This restaurant, located near Miyanoura Port, had been recommended to me by several locals. The restaurant had a funky vibe, and I opted for the Naoshima seafood curry, eager to taste the local flavors. The curry was delicious, a perfect blend of spices and fresh seafood. The portion was generous, and the service was fast and friendly. It was a satisfying and enjoyable meal, a welcome break from the artistic explorations of the day.

I overheard a couple of tourists discussing the upcoming Setouchi Triennale, which reminded me that Naoshima is not just a place to see art but also a place where art is constantly evolving. The island is a living canvas, a dynamic space where artists and visitors come together to create and experience art in new and exciting ways. It made me think of my own work, how each piece of furniture I restore tells a story, a narrative that evolves with each new owner and each new setting.

Miyanoura Gallery 6: Storytelling Through Art

After lunch, I made my way to Miyanoura Gallery 6. Housed in a converted pachinko parlor, the gallery was an intriguing space. The current exhibition, the Setouchi Archive, featured rotating exhibits that documented various aspects of the region's history. When I visited, the exhibition was 'Artist at Gallery 6 2016' for the Setouchi Triennale 2016. The exhibition changes with each season, and when I visited in the Spring, I was able to see '100 Living Tales' by Yuki Iiyama. Iiyama asked residents of the islands from Okayama and Kagawa prefectures if they had ever experienced anything strange or unexplainable on the island. It was very captivating to read the responses.

The exhibition was a fascinating glimpse into the lives and experiences of the islanders. Through photographs, interviews, and artifacts, the gallery told stories of resilience, adaptation, and community. It was a reminder that art is not just about aesthetics but also about communication, connection, and understanding. I spent a long time reading the stories, reflecting on the challenges and triumphs of the people who call Naoshima home. As someone who has spent years restoring antique furniture, I have a deep appreciation for the stories that objects can tell. Each piece I work on has a history, a past that is etched into its grain and its form. The Miyanoura Gallery 6 was like a museum of memories, a place where the past came alive through art.

Art Island Center: Souvenirs and Reflections

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I stopped by the Art Island Center, hoping to find a small memento of my visit. The shop was filled with art books, postcards, and other souvenirs, but I eventually settled on a small print of Ando's architecture. It was a simple yet elegant reminder of the beauty and inspiration I had found on Naoshima.

As I walked back, I reflected on the day's experiences. The Ando Museum, Go'o Shrine, and Miyanoura Gallery 6 had each offered a unique perspective on Naoshima's artistic landscape. From the architectural brilliance of Ando to the spiritual contemplation of Sugimoto and the storytelling of the islanders, I had gained a deeper appreciation for the art that permeates every aspect of this remarkable place.

Dinner at Chikurin: A Taste of Local Culture

For dinner, I decided to try Chikurin, an izakaya known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. This cozy restaurant welcomed guests with its warm ambiance and friendly service. The menu featured a delightful selection of traditional Japanese dishes, showcasing local ingredients and seasonal flavors. The charm of Chikurin extended beyond its delicious food; it was also a place where locals gathered to unwind after a long day. The communal setting encouraged conversation and connection among diners, making it easy to feel at home even if you are visiting from afar. I enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled fish and sake, savoring the flavors and soaking in the atmosphere. It was a perfect end to a day of artistic exploration.

As I write this, sitting in my room at My Lodge Naoshima, I feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu, Art House Project: Kadoya, and Seaside Gallery, eager to discover more of the island's artistic treasures. But for now, I am content to savor the memories of today, the quiet revelations and the gentle unfolding of Naoshima's soul. I am learning to appreciate the beauty of imperfection, the stories that objects can tell, and the power of art to connect us to each other and to the world around us.
