Echoes of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today in Évora, I felt like I journeyed through time, experiencing the city's history not just through its monuments but also through its art and culinary traditions. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and, of course, delightful indulgence with Astrid and Lasse.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at SBO Sabores e Livros. It's a cozy spot, and the combination of 'flavors and books' was quite charming. I enjoyed a traditional Portuguese pastry while Lasse devoured a plate of sushi – a rather eclectic start to our day, but that's part of the fun of traveling, isn't it? Astrid enjoyed a savory tart, and we all appreciated the cozy atmosphere before setting out to explore.

First on our itinerary was the Aqueduto de Évora. As a restorer of antique furniture, I'm always fascinated by the ingenuity of past craftsmen, and this aqueduct is a testament to their skill. Built in the 16th century, it stretches for kilometers, bringing fresh water to Évora. Walking alongside it, I imagined the countless people who relied on this structure for their daily needs. The arches, some of which are integrated into the city's buildings, create a unique urban landscape. Lasse, surprisingly, was also intrigued, especially by the way the aqueduct seamlessly blended into the modern city. I couldn't help but think of the Roman aqueducts back in Arezzo, and how essential these structures were to the development of civilizations.

History is not just about dates and names; it's about understanding the ingenuity and resilience of those who came before us.

Next, we visited the Museu de Évora - Núcleo de Arte Sacra da Igreja das Mercês. Housed in a centuries-old church, the museum showcases a collection of sacred art that spans different periods. As someone who appreciates the artistry and craftsmanship of the past, I was captivated by the intricate details of the altarpieces, sculptures, and religious objects on display. Astrid, with her librarian's eye, was particularly interested in the historical context of each piece. Lasse, while not as enthusiastic as we were, seemed to appreciate the artistry involved, especially the gold leaf detailing. It was a serene and contemplative experience, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and art.

After immersing ourselves in sacred art, it was time for a different kind of immersion – into the world of Alentejo wines. We drove to Cartuxa - Quinta de Valbom - Fundação Eugénio de Almeida, a renowned winery just outside Évora. The estate itself is beautiful, with vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see. We took a guided tour, learning about the history of the winery and the winemaking process. Of course, the highlight was the wine tasting. I savored the rich, complex flavors of the Cartuxa wines, while Astrid, ever the thoughtful one, took notes on the different varietals. Lasse, being underage, contented himself with the grape juice, but even he admitted that the atmosphere was special. As we sampled the wines, I thought about my grandfather, who always appreciated a good glass of Chianti. I felt a connection to him, and to my Italian roots, even here in Portugal.

For lunch, we enjoyed a delightful meal at Enoteca Cartuxa. The restaurant is located in the heart of Évora, and the ambiance is both elegant and relaxed. We started with a refreshing gazpacho, followed by traditional Alentejo dishes. I opted for the pork cheeks, a local specialty, while Astrid chose the vegetarian lasagna. Lasse, predictably, went for the steak. The food was delicious, and the wine pairings were perfect. It was a leisurely meal, filled with laughter and conversation, a perfect way to recharge after a busy morning.

In the late afternoon, we took a stroll through Évora, eventually finding ourselves at a Traditional Portuguese Craft Store. I was eager to find some unique souvenirs, and this store did not disappoint. I was drawn to the woodworking, naturally. There were beautiful pieces crafted from cork, a material that's abundant in the Alentejo region. Astrid found some lovely hand-painted ceramics, and Lasse picked out a leather bracelet. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was glad to find some authentic, handcrafted items to take home.

Finally, as the sun began to set, we made our way to Fialho for dinner. This restaurant, a family establishment since 1945, is renowned for its traditional Alentejo cuisine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff was incredibly friendly. We started with the presunto, a local cured ham, followed by hearty main courses. I savored the flavors of the Alentejo, the rich sauces, and tender meats. Astrid enjoyed a fish dish, while Lasse devoured a generous portion of lamb. It was a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Pátio de São Miguel, Palácio Barahona, and the Monument to the Dead of the Great War. We'll also try a new bar, Bar Culpa Tua, for a relaxing evening drink. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery in this enchanting city.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm struck by the way Évora seamlessly blends its rich history with its vibrant present. The city's monuments are not just relics of the past; they're living, breathing parts of the community. And the food, the wine, the art – they're all expressions of the Alentejo's unique culture and identity. It's a place that nourishes the soul, and I'm grateful to be sharing it with my family.

I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!
