First Impressions: Kanazawa's Warm Embrace

The first day of any trip is always filled with a unique blend of excitement and slight disorientation. Today in Kanazawa was no exception. Stepping out of the train, I was immediately struck by the city's serene atmosphere, a world away from the bustling streets of Tokyo. I was eager to dive into the cultural heart of this captivating city, and what better way to start than with its famed garden and historic castle?

The weather was crisp, a typical late autumn day. The air was cool enough to warrant a light jacket, but not so cold as to be uncomfortable. It was perfect for a day of walking and exploring, camera in hand, ready to capture the beauty that Kanazawa had to offer. As Emily and Oliver couldn't join me on this trip, I felt a pang of longing, but also a thrill of venturing out on my own. I knew they'd be keen to hear all about it when I got back, especially Oliver, who's always fascinated by castles and ancient history.

A Morning Stroll Through Kenroku-en

My first stop was Kenroku-en, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. As a history enthusiast, I’ve read countless descriptions, but nothing prepared me for the sheer beauty and tranquility of this place. The meticulously manicured landscape, with its ancient trees and serene ponds, was like stepping into a living painting. I wandered along the winding paths, each turn revealing a new vista more breathtaking than the last. The autumn foliage was in full swing, painting the garden in hues of red, gold, and amber.

It was fascinating to see the preparations for winter already underway. The famous *yukitsuri* – the traditional roping of the pine trees to protect them from the heavy snow – was being meticulously installed. It's a testament to the care and dedication the Japanese have for their gardens, ensuring their beauty endures through every season. The *Karasaki* pine, with its branches supported by an intricate web of ropes, was a sight to behold.

The true essence of travel is not just seeing new places, but experiencing them with all your senses.

As I strolled, I couldn't help but think of my grandfather, a keen gardener himself, and how much he would have appreciated this place. I made a mental note to bring Oliver here one day; he'd love the winding paths and hidden corners, imagining himself as a samurai exploring a secret world.

Exploring Kanazawa Castle Park

Adjacent to Kenroku-en lies Kanazawa Castle Park, a site steeped in history. The castle, once the seat of the powerful Maeda clan, is a stunning example of Japanese feudal architecture. Although much of the original structure is gone, the reconstructed elements, like the Ishikawa-mon Gate, are impressive. I spent a good couple of hours wandering around the grounds, admiring the intricate stonework and imagining what life must have been like within those walls centuries ago.

I learned that Kanazawa Castle is known as the “Stone Wall Museum” because of its various types of stone walls. Each wall has different characteristics depending on the period and purpose for which they were built. It was fascinating to observe the differences and ponder the history embedded in each stone. The park was beautifully lit, accentuating the unique stone walls and creating a magical atmosphere.

A Culinary Journey Begins

For breakfast, I ventured to Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Café, a place recommended for its excellent coffee and unique atmosphere. Run by a couple, one from Seattle and the other from Kanazawa, it blends American and Japanese cultures seamlessly. I opted for a vegetarian sandwich and a latte, both of which were superb. The café itself was a treasure trove of vintage curios, adding to its charm. It reminded me of a small café Emily and I stumbled upon in York, filled with quirky antiques and serving the most delicious scones.

Lunch was at Iki-iki Tei, a seafood restaurant in Omicho Market. Kanazawa is renowned for its seafood, and I was eager to sample some of the local delicacies. I decided on the *kaisen-don*, a seafood rice bowl topped with a generous assortment of fresh fish. It was an explosion of flavors, each bite a testament to the freshness and quality of the ingredients. The restaurant was small and cozy, with only a handful of counter seats, giving it a personal and intimate feel.

Shopping for Souvenirs and Specialties

In the afternoon, I explored Kanazawa Hyakubangai, a large shopping mall connected to Kanazawa Station. It’s divided into three sections: Anto, Rinto, and Kutsurogikan. Anto is primarily a souvenir market, offering a wide array of local specialties. I picked up some *wagashi* (traditional Japanese sweets) and a bottle of local sake for Emily and a small, beautifully crafted wooden toy for Oliver.

Rinto is devoted to fashion boutiques and clothing brands. I didn't linger here too long, as fashion isn't really my forte. Kutsurogikan has four floors and includes the Via Inn hotel. The mall offered a convenient way to experience Kanazawa's unique specialties and pick up souvenirs while waiting for the train.

A Taste of Local Innovation

For dinner, I chose Plat Home - Kanazawa Kitchen, a restaurant known for its innovative approach to traditional Japanese cuisine. The menu featured tapas-style dishes, allowing me to sample a variety of flavors. The presentation was exquisite, each dish a work of art. I particularly enjoyed the potato salad and the tuna avocado. The restaurant had a contemporary yet inviting atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for a solo diner like myself. The innovative cooking techniques and vibrant presentation made it a memorable culinary experience.

Evening Reflections and Tomorrow's Plans

As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the beauty and serenity of Kanazawa. It's a city that effortlessly blends history and modernity, offering a unique glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and explore the Higashi Chaya District. I’m also hoping to sample some local sake at Oriental Brewing.

I'm particularly excited about visiting the Higashi Chaya District, one of Kanazawa's best-preserved geisha districts. It’s like stepping back in time, with its traditional wooden buildings and teahouses. I’m hoping to catch a glimpse into the world of the geishas and learn more about their fascinating history.

Back at the Henn na Hotel Kanazawa Korinbo, I settled in for the night, already looking forward to another day of exploration. Kanazawa has certainly captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I'm sure Emily and Oliver would love this place, and I can't wait to share my experiences with them when I get back. Perhaps we'll plan a family trip here next year, so Oliver can finally see a real-life samurai castle. Until then, I'll continue to soak in the beauty and culture of this enchanting city, one day at a time.
