Illuminations in Ink and Flavor
Today was a day of quiet contemplation and delightful culinary exploration in Kanazawa. From the serene beauty of Kenrokuen Garden to the innovative flavors of local cuisine, it was a journey that nourished both the soul and the senses. It's days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo adventure in the first place – to discover the hidden gems and unique experiences that a place has to offer.
My morning began, as many do here, with a visit to Kenrokuen Garden. Despite the approach of winter, the garden held a captivating charm, a blend of autumnal hues and the promise of snow to come. I made my way to the Katsura-zaka gate, and as I entered, the tranquil waters of Kasumiga-ike Pond stretched before me. The pond, the largest in the garden, is designed to be beautiful in every season. The crisp air carried the scent of pine and damp earth, a refreshing contrast to the bustling city just beyond the garden walls.

My destination within the garden was the famed Kotoji Toro, the two-legged stone lantern that has become an iconic symbol of Kanazawa. The lantern's unique design, resembling the bridge of a Japanese koto instrument, stood gracefully beside the Niji-bashi (Rainbow Bridge). I spent a good while simply admiring its form, the way the light played across its weathered surface, and the sense of history it exuded. It's funny, isn't it? How a simple stone structure can become such a powerful emblem of a place.

I took my time wandering around Kasumiga-ike Pond, admiring the carefully arranged stones and meticulously pruned trees. The pond reflects the changing colors of the sky, creating a stunning visual effect. I paused to appreciate the serenity of the scene, a moment of peace amidst my travels. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the simple things in life.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
For breakfast, I ventured to Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Café, a spot recommended for its vegetarian and vegan options. I opted for their breakfast sandwich plate, a delightful combination of flavors and textures that set the perfect tone for the day. It's a quirky little place, run by a friendly couple, and it's clear they've created a space that's beloved by locals and visitors alike. I could see myself becoming a regular here if I lived in Kanazawa.

Lunch was an adventure in itself at Kanazawa Temakizushi Coil. This restaurant offers a modern take on traditional hosomaki, with a do-it-yourself approach. I selected a variety of fillings and crafted my own hand rolls, a fun and interactive experience that allowed me to experiment with different flavor combinations. The presentation was beautiful, with the ingredients served in a multi-layered wooden box. It was a truly unique and memorable meal.

In the evening, I had dinner at Dining Tsuzumi, located in the Hotel Kanazawa. The restaurant offers European-inspired cuisine with a focus on local Ishikawa ingredients. I opted for one of their prefix courses, allowing me to sample a range of dishes that highlighted the region's seasonal flavors. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Before heading back to the Henn na Hotel Kanazawa Korinbo, I decided to check out Bar Spoon. The bar is known for its innovative cocktails and extensive selection of Japanese spirits. The bartender was a true mixologist, crafting a bespoke cocktail based on my preferences. It was the perfect nightcap, a final taste of Kanazawa's vibrant culture.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm struck by the seamless blend of tradition and modernity that defines Kanazawa. The city has a rich history, evident in its beautifully preserved gardens and historic districts, yet it also embraces innovation and creativity in its culinary scene and cultural offerings. It's a city that rewards exploration, offering something new and unexpected around every corner.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Tentokuin Temple and Ishiura Shrine, continuing my exploration of Kanazawa's cultural landmarks. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Kanazawa Forus, picking up some souvenirs to remind me of my time here. And of course, I'll be starting my day with another visit to Curio Espresso for my morning coffee.
It's funny, you know, how travel changes you. It broadens your perspective, challenges your assumptions, and leaves you with a deeper appreciation for the world around you. I’m already looking forward to what tomorrow brings.
It's been a wonderful experience so far, and I can't wait to see what other hidden gems I'll uncover in the days to come. Maybe I'll even find a local Arsenal supporter to share a pint with! After all, a bit of home can make any place feel even more special. Goodnight from Kanazawa!
