Uji: A Journey Through Time and Tea
Today, my friends and I ventured beyond the familiar streets of Kyoto to explore the charming town of Uji. Known for its exquisite tea and historic sites, Uji promised a day of cultural immersion and tranquil beauty. As a Zimbabwean expat living in Canada, I always find myself drawn to places where history and nature intertwine, offering a sense of peace and reflection. And Uji certainly delivered on that promise.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tategami. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and a variety of small, flavorful side dishes. David, ever the adventurous eater, tried the restaurant's specialty, a savory egg custard that he declared was surprisingly delicious. Fuelled and ready, we set off to explore our first destination: Byodoin.

Byodoin: A Glimpse of Paradise
Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is truly a sight to behold. As we approached the Phoenix Hall, its vibrant red color and intricate architecture reflected beautifully in the surrounding pond. It felt like stepping into a postcard. Thandiwe was particularly fascinated by the golden phoenix statues atop the hall, asking endless questions about their significance. I explained to her how the phoenix symbolizes rebirth and immortality, a concept that resonated with her curious mind. The Phoenix Hall is so iconic that it even graces the back of the 10-yen coin! Unfortunately, we missed the opportunity to view the interior of the Phoenix Hall, but we did manage to explore the Hoshokan Museum, which houses many of the temple's treasures including a temple bell and statues of Bodhisattvas. It was a truly enlightening experience. The serenity of the temple grounds was palpable, offering a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. We took our time wandering through the gardens, admiring the meticulously manicured landscapes and the peaceful atmosphere.

It felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by centuries of history and the gentle whisper of the wind through the trees.
Uji Shrine: Discovering Local Lore
Next on our itinerary was Uji Shrine, a short walk from Byodoin. This shrine, with its rich history spanning over 1700 years, is dedicated to Prince Ujinowakiiratsukonomikoto, revered as the founder of culture and education. The shrine is known for bestowing blessings for academic achievement, success in exams, and safe childbirth. The main hall, constructed in the Sangensha Nagare-zukuri style with cypress bark roofing, dates back to the early Kamakura period and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Thandiwe was particularly enchanted by the rabbit figurines scattered throughout the shrine. I shared the story of the Mikaeri Usagi, the Looking-Back Rabbit, which guided Prince Ujinowakiiratsukonomikoto when he lost his way. This charming tale added a touch of whimsy to our visit, and Thandiwe insisted on buying a rabbit-shaped *omamori* (amulet) for good luck in her studies. The shrine's peaceful atmosphere and beautiful architecture made it a truly special place.
Lunch at Oryori Menami: A Taste of Kyoto
By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We decided to try Oryori Menami, a restaurant known for its Obanzai cuisine, Kyoto-style home cooking emphasizing seasonal ingredients. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We ordered a selection of small plates, including simmered vegetables, grilled fish, and tofu dishes. Each dish was flavorful and beautifully presented, showcasing the best of Kyoto's culinary traditions. David particularly enjoyed the *dashimaki tamago* (rolled omelet), while Thandiwe devoured the sweet potato croquettes. For me, the highlight was the *miso*-glazed eggplant, a dish that perfectly balanced sweet and savory flavors. The restaurant also offers an izakaya-style dining experience, allowing guests to enjoy a range of small plates alongside their favorite drinks.

Uji Park: Nature's Embrace
After lunch, we strolled through Uji Park, a beautiful green space along the Uji River. The park was alive with the vibrant colors of spring, with cherry blossoms still clinging to the branches and azaleas in full bloom. We walked along the winding paths, enjoying the refreshing breeze and the scenic views of the river. Thandiwe skipped ahead, chasing butterflies and collecting fallen petals. The park is also home to a historic pagoda, adding a touch of cultural significance to the natural beauty.

Uji Park is more than just a pretty place; it's a space where you can feel the pulse of the community. Families were picnicking under the trees, couples strolled hand-in-hand, and artists sketched the picturesque scenery. It was a reminder of the simple joys in life and the importance of connecting with nature.
As we wandered through the park, we stumbled upon a group of people practicing *taiko* drumming. The rhythmic beats resonated through the air, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. Thandiwe was mesmerized, watching the drummers with wide eyes. It was a spontaneous and unexpected cultural experience that added another layer to our Uji adventure. We even learned that The Ujigawa Sakura Festival takes place at Uji Park (Nakanoshima). The festival includes pottery, crafts, and food stalls.
Kyoto Crafts Store: A Treasure Trove of Artistry
Before leaving Uji, we made a stop at the Kyoto Crafts Store, hoping to find a unique souvenir to remember our visit. The store was a treasure trove of traditional Japanese crafts, from delicate ceramics to intricately woven textiles. I was particularly drawn to the *yuzen* silk scarves, admiring the vibrant colors and exquisite designs. David, always practical, was fascinated by the handcrafted knives, examining the quality of the steel and the precision of the blades. Thandiwe, of course, gravitated towards the *kawaii* (cute) section, squealing with delight at the colorful origami paper and the miniature *kokeshi* dolls.

I ended up purchasing a beautiful *chawan* (tea bowl) with a delicate floral pattern, a reminder of Uji's rich tea culture. David chose a handcrafted *kiridashi* knife, a versatile tool perfect for his woodworking projects. And Thandiwe proudly clutched her *kokeshi* doll, promising to keep it as a reminder of our Uji adventure. The Kyoto Handicraft Center is a great place to spend the afternoon browsing traditional Japanese handicrafts and learning about the local artistry.
Dinner at Nakamura: A Culinary Finale
To cap off our day, we treated ourselves to a special dinner at Nakamura, a three-Michelin-starred *kaiseki* restaurant in Kyoto. This was an experience I had been looking forward to since planning this trip, and it certainly did not disappoint. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance and refinement. The service was impeccable, and the presentation of each dish was a work of art.

The *kaiseki* menu featured a series of small, meticulously prepared dishes, each highlighting seasonal ingredients and showcasing the chef's mastery of Japanese culinary techniques. We savored the delicate flavors of the sashimi, the rich umami of the miso soup, and the perfectly balanced sweetness of the grilled fish. It was a culinary journey that delighted all our senses. The restaurant is known for its *shiromiso zoni*, a signature dish. I felt transported to another world, surrounded by the exquisite flavors and the serene ambiance.
As we savored the final course, a delicate dessert of matcha ice cream and fresh fruit, I reflected on our day in Uji. It had been a journey through time and tea, a celebration of Japanese culture and natural beauty. From the serene temples to the lush parks and the exquisite cuisine, Uji had captured our hearts and left us with memories to cherish.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore more of Kyoto's cultural treasures, starting with the Heian Shrine, followed by a stroll along the Philosopher's Path, and a visit to the Eikando Temple. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at The Roots of all evil bar in the evening. Until then, *tot ziens* (goodbye) from Kyoto!
