A Day of Departures and Discoveries

As my Kyoto adventure with my friends nears its end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we've shared. Today was a blend of spiritual exploration and culinary indulgence, a perfect encapsulation of what makes Kyoto so special. It's funny how a place can feel both familiar and endlessly surprising, even after several days of exploration.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hafuu. I opted for their famed beef cutlet sandwich, a delightful mix of textures and flavors. The tender beef, encased in a crispy, golden crust, was the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. The restaurant itself exuded a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, a great start to the day.

With appetites sated, we set off for Fushimi Inari Taisha. I'd heard so much about the seemingly endless path of vibrant red torii gates, and it was even more breathtaking in person. The thousands of torii gates snaking up the mountain created a mesmerizing tunnel, each gate a donation from a business seeking prosperity. As we ascended, the crowds thinned, and a sense of tranquility settled in. The higher we climbed, the more stunning the views of Kyoto became. We took our time, pausing to admire the intricate details of the smaller shrines along the way and to catch our breath. It was a truly immersive experience, a testament to the enduring power of faith and tradition.

"The beauty of a journey lies not just in the destinations we reach, but in the moments that transform us along the way."

After descending from Fushimi Inari, we journeyed to Sanjūsangendō Temple, a temple renowned for its 1,001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Stepping into the hall, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale and artistry of the display. Rows upon rows of golden statues stretched into the distance, each with a unique expression and posture. The central statue of the 1,000-armed Kannon was particularly awe-inspiring, a symbol of compassion and salvation. Photography was not allowed inside the hall, which only added to the sense of reverence and contemplation. It was a truly humbling experience, a reminder of the boundless capacity for human empathy.

Our final temple visit of the day was to Tōfuku-ji Temple. Founded in 1236, it stands as one of Kyoto's principal Zen temples. While the temple complex itself was impressive, it was the gardens that truly captured my imagination. Designed by Mirei Shigemori in the 20th century, the gardens around the Hojo (Abbot's Quarters) were a fascinating blend of traditional Zen aesthetics and modern abstract art. The checkerboard pattern of the North Garden, the rugged rocks of the South Garden, and the serene moss of the West Garden each offered a unique perspective on the natural world. I found myself lost in contemplation, pondering the deeper meaning of Zen philosophy. The gardens offered a peaceful sanctuary amidst the bustling city.

As evening approached, it was time for another culinary adventure. We had a reservation at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION, and I was eager to sample some of Japan's most famous beef. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a teppanyaki grill at each table. Our chef expertly prepared the Kobe beef, searing it to perfection and serving it with a selection of delectable side dishes. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was a truly indulgent experience, a celebration of Japanese culinary artistry. David would have loved this, I will make sure to bring him here the next time we visit Japan together.

For dinner, we ventured to Masayoshi Japanese Dining, seeking a taste of authentic Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant was small and intimate, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. We ordered a selection of dishes, each showcasing the freshest local ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. From the delicate sashimi to the savory tempura, every bite was a delight. It was a perfect ending to a day of culinary exploration, a reminder of the simple pleasures of good food and good company.

To cap off our final night in Kyoto, we decided to visit Bar K6. Known for its extensive selection of scotch and cognac, it was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on our journey. The bar had a sophisticated, old-world charm, with dim lighting and comfortable seating. I sipped on a carefully crafted cocktail, savoring the complex flavors and the mellow atmosphere. It was a great way to celebrate the end of our trip. I made sure to take it easy on the drinks, keeping in mind the early start we have tomorrow.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had in Kyoto. From the serene temples to the bustling markets, from the exquisite cuisine to the warm hospitality, this city has captured my heart. I am so glad that I got to share this experience with my friends. It has been an amazing trip, full of laughter, discovery, and unforgettable memories. As I prepare to leave tomorrow, I know that a part of me will always remain in Kyoto, longing to return and explore its hidden corners once more.

Miyako Odori is still running, I wish we had had time to attend a performance, it sounds amazing. Also, I noticed that Kyokusui no Utage, an elegant form of leisure entertainment enjoyed by nobles in ancient Japan, is reenacted at Jōnangū Shrine today. It would have been great to see that too.

Tomorrow marks the end of our trip, and we'll be heading back to Canada. I'm already looking forward to sharing my stories and photos with David and Thandiwe, and perhaps even inspiring them to embark on their own Kyoto adventure someday. While I'm excited to return home, I'll also carry a piece of Kyoto with me, a reminder of the beauty, history, and culture that make this city so special. Until next time, Kyoto, arigato gozaimasu!

Though I am excited to go home, I will definitely miss Japan. I will especially miss the food! I might try to recreate some of the dishes I have tried here in my own kitchen. Thandiwe would love that.

Before I close, I must remember to buy some souvenirs for David and Thandiwe! I am sure I will find something at the airport. I am also looking forward to sleeping in my own bed again.

I am so happy that I did not forget any of the trip essentials this time!

I will also remember to pack an umbrella and a travel journal for my next trip!

Safe travels everyone!
