A Day of Bamboo, Zen, and Monkeys in Arashiyama

Today’s adventure in Arashiyama was nothing short of magical. From the serene sway of the bamboo forest to the playful antics of the monkeys, every moment was a sensory delight. I’m so excited to share this experience with you, my dear readers, especially as Kyoto continues to reveal its many layers of beauty and history.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. It might seem odd to start a day of traditional Japanese sightseeing with pizza, but after several days of indulging in local cuisine, David and I were craving something familiar. The pizza was delicious, and it provided the perfect fuel for our morning explorations. I must admit, sometimes a little taste of home is exactly what you need when you're far away. The staff were exceptionally friendly, and it set a great tone for the day.

Next on our list was the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. As we stepped into the grove, the towering stalks of bamboo enveloped us, creating a world of green shadows and gentle whispers. The sun, though bright, barely pierced through the dense canopy, casting an ethereal glow on the path ahead. It felt like stepping into another realm, a sanctuary far removed from the bustling city. I lost myself in the rhythmic sway of the bamboo, feeling a sense of peace I hadn't realized I was missing. It's a popular spot, and there were many other tourists, but the sheer scale of the forest allowed for moments of quiet contemplation. I even managed to snap a few photos without anyone else in the frame – a small victory!

The beauty of Arashiyama lies not just in its sights, but in the way it makes you feel connected to something larger than yourself.

Emerging from the bamboo forest, we made our way to Tenryu-ji Temple. This Zen temple, with its stunning gardens, offered a welcome respite. Founded in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji, it was built to honor Emperor Go-Daigo. The temple's history is rich, and its buildings have been rebuilt over the centuries, but the gardens, designed by Muso Soseki, have remained largely unchanged. As I wandered through the meticulously manicured landscape, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The central pond, the carefully placed rocks, and the backdrop of the Arashiyama mountains created a harmonious scene that was both calming and inspiring. It’s easy to see why this temple is ranked among Kyoto's five great Zen temples and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artistry and care put into the garden's design is astounding.

After soaking in the tranquility of Tenryu-ji, we decided to embrace our adventurous side and hike up to the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. The climb was definitely a workout, a steep uphill trek that had me questioning my fitness levels. But as we ascended, the views of Kyoto began to unfold, offering glimpses of the city nestled between the surrounding hills. Finally, we reached the top, and were greeted by a troop of Japanese macaque monkeys. These weren't zoo animals; they were wild creatures, roaming freely and unafraid. I must admit, I was a bit apprehensive at first, remembering the signs warning us not to stare directly at them or make sudden movements. But soon, I found myself captivated by their antics. We even bought some monkey treats – peanuts and apple slices – and fed them through the wire mesh of the feeding area. It was an amusing experience, watching them snatch the food with their nimble fingers.

While the monkey park is a popular attraction, it does raise some ethical questions. Are these monkeys truly wild if they're being fed by humans? Is it right to confine them to a park, even if it's a large one? These are questions I wrestled with as I observed them. However, the park staff seemed dedicated to ensuring the monkeys were treated with respect, and the animals appeared healthy and well-cared for. It’s a complex issue with no easy answers. It’s worth remembering that they are wild animals, and caution is needed. We were advised not to touch them and to avoid direct eye contact, which they perceive as aggression. The monkeys seemed quite accustomed to human presence, but it's always good to be respectful of their space.

For lunch, we ventured to Arash's Kitchen, a small restaurant offering Persian and Indian cuisine. After days of Japanese food, it was a welcome change. The aromas of spices and herbs filled the air, transporting me back to the vibrant flavors of Zimbabwean cooking. We ordered a selection of kebabs, curries, and freshly baked bread, and every dish was bursting with flavor. It was a delightful culinary experience, and the owner, Arash, was incredibly welcoming, making us feel like we were dining in his home. Discovering such diverse culinary offerings has become one of my favorite parts of traveling, and Arash’s Kitchen did not disappoint.

Before heading back to the hotel, we couldn't resist a bit of shopping at Kazari Nishiki. This charming shop was filled with local crafts and souvenirs, and I found a beautiful silk scarf to bring home as a reminder of our time in Kyoto. It's always nice to have a tangible memento of a trip, something that will evoke memories and emotions long after we've returned home.

Dinner was at Gion Mikaku, a renowned steakhouse in the Gion district. Known for its premium Wagyu beef and traditional teppanyaki-style cooking, it was a luxurious treat. The chef prepared our steaks with precision and artistry, and every bite was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The restaurant's ambiance, overlooking the Shirakawa River, added to the romantic atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful country. From the serene bamboo forest to the playful monkeys and the exquisite cuisine, every moment has been a gift. And tomorrow promises even more wonders, as we plan to visit Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), Ryoan-ji Temple, and Ninna-ji Temple. I’m particularly excited about seeing the Golden Pavilion, as I’ve heard it’s even more stunning in person than in photographs. And perhaps we’ll cap off the day with a drink at The Screen – a perfect way to unwind after a day of temple hopping. Until then, dear readers, stay tuned for more tales from Kyoto!

I am also reminded of how much I miss my family back home in Canada, especially my daughter Thandiwe. I hope to bring them here one day to experience the beauty and culture of Japan firsthand. But for now, I will continue to share my adventures with them through my blog, and hope that they can feel a part of this journey, even from afar. It reinforces my mission to share my unique perspective with the world, as a Zimbabwean expat. It's a privilege to bring a little piece of my heritage to every story I tell.

And, as I drift off to sleep, I can’t help but wonder what tomorrow will bring. Until then, goodnight from Kyoto.
