Journey Through the Heart of Shikoku

Today was a day of breathtaking beauty and spiritual reflection as we continued our adventure through Shikoku Island. From the dramatic landscapes of Ōboke Gorge to the serene heights of Umpenji Temple, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the chance to immerse myself in new cultures, witness stunning scenery, and create lasting memories with my family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Inonakanokawazu, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Japanese breakfast [i]. The cozy atmosphere and the delicious, locally sourced ingredients were the perfect way to start our explorations. Thandiwe especially loved the miso soup, declaring it the best she’d ever tasted. David and I enjoyed the grilled fish and rice, savoring the authentic flavors of the region. I felt a pang of nostalgia, reminiscent of the simple, wholesome meals I grew up with in Gweru.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the famed Ōboke Gorge. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a dramatic display of rocky cliffs and emerald-green waters. The Yoshino River, carving its way through the gorge, created a scene that was both awe-inspiring and humbling. The name Ōboke, meaning big dangerous steps, certainly lived up to its reputation.

We decided to take a boat tour to fully appreciate the gorge's beauty. The gentle, 30-minute ride allowed us to relax and soak in the stunning views. The guide pointed out interesting rock formations, many resembling different animals, adding a touch of whimsy to the experience. Thandiwe was particularly excited, spotting what she thought looked like a giant turtle and a sleeping dragon. The fresh air and the sound of the rushing water were incredibly invigorating. It was amazing to think that the Taira clan, after their defeat in the 12th century, sought refuge in this remote area. I could see why – it was a perfect place to disappear and find solace in nature's embrace. The boat ride was a smooth journey on tatami mats, where you could admire the emerald-colored water and towering rock walls.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that require a little extra effort to reach.

After the boat tour, we stopped by Island Mishima, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs [i]. I found a beautiful hand-painted fan depicting the gorge, while David chose a set of local teas. Thandiwe, of course, gravitated towards the colorful candies and small trinkets [i]. Supporting local businesses is important to me. It reminds me of the bustling markets back in Gweru, where you could find everything from fresh produce to handcrafted goods. It’s the heart of any community.

Next on our itinerary was Umpenji Temple, the 66th temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Situated high in the mountains, reaching the temple required a scenic ropeway ride. As we ascended, the views became increasingly spectacular, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. The ropeway made the journey easier, but I couldn't help but imagine the pilgrims of the past, who would have had to climb the steep mountain trails on foot. Their dedication and faith were truly inspiring.

Arriving at Umpenji Temple, we were greeted by a serene and spiritual atmosphere. The temple grounds were adorned with hundreds of stone statues of Buddha's disciples, each with its own unique expression. Thandiwe had fun trying to find a statue that looked like her, while David and I admired the intricate details and the sense of peace that permeated the air. Legend has it that Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, visited Umpenji three times, further adding to its mystique. The temple has a long history, dating back to the 8th century, and has served as a place of study and training for monks from all over Shikoku.

The main hall of the temple was a sight to behold, with its ornate carvings and the scent of incense filling the air. We took a moment to light a candle and offer a prayer, reflecting on our journey and the blessings in our lives. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this sacred place with my family. The temple is also known for its seasonal beauty, with hydrangeas in early summer, autumn leaves in the fall, and snowy landscapes in winter. Although we missed the peak seasons, the lush greenery of late spring was equally enchanting.

After exploring Umpenji Temple, hunger called, and we headed to Yuzuan Restaurant for lunch [i]. This restaurant is known for its authentic Japanese dishes and warm hospitality. We tried a variety of local specialties, including a delicious udon noodle soup and some fresh seafood. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a true culinary delight. The restaurant's ambiance was cozy and inviting, making us feel right at home.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Dining Room Hibari for dinner [i]. This restaurant is famous for its katsudon, a Japanese pork cutlet rice bowl. David and Thandiwe were eager to try it, and they were not disappointed. The katsudon was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a flavorful sauce that tied it all together. I opted for a vegetarian option, which was equally delicious. The Dining Room Hibari is known for its authentic Japanese flavors. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration and adventure. It was a simple, satisfying meal that left us feeling content and ready for a good night's sleep.
