Whispers of Old Japan

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to breathe in the history and artistry of Takamatsu. Leaving behind the familiar comfort of my Stratford home, I was eager to lose myself in the meticulously crafted landscapes and echoes of the past that Shikoku Island promised. It was a solo journey, a quiet conversation with a culture so different from my own, yet somehow, deeply familiar in its reverence for nature and community.

My day began with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Kohanyu. It was a delightful start to the day. The reviews I had read online did not lie; the restaurant truly delivered on its promise of authentic Japanese hospitality and cuisine. I savored every bite, feeling the warmth of the food and the kindness of the staff fortifying me for the day's adventures. It reminded me of the simple, nourishing meals my mother used to prepare in Gweru, Zimbabwe, each dish a story in itself.

From there, I ventured to the famed Ritsurin Garden. This garden is a masterpiece of landscape design. As I stepped through the entrance, I was immediately transported to a world of manicured greenery, tranquil ponds, and meticulously placed stones. The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a soothing balm to the senses.

I wandered along the winding paths, each turn revealing a new vista more breathtaking than the last. The garden is set against the backdrop of Mount Shiun, which seems to loom protectively over the serene landscape. The six ponds and thirteen artificial hills create a sense of depth and perspective, making the garden feel much larger than it actually is. It was easy to get lost in the beauty, to forget the outside world and simply be present in the moment. I imagined Thandiwe, my daughter, running through these paths, her laughter echoing through the trees. I made a mental note to bring her here someday, to share this sense of peace and wonder with her.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

I paused by the Fuyo-numa pond, where delicate water lilies floated serenely on the surface. The summer sun cast a golden glow on the pale pink and yellow petals, creating a scene of ethereal beauty. It reminded me of the vibrant colors of the bougainvillea that climbed the walls of our home in Gweru, a splash of African sunshine in a Japanese garden.

Continuing my exploration, I came across the Kikugetsu-tei teahouse, a traditional structure offering stunning views of the garden. I decided to indulge in a cup of matcha, the vibrant green tea whisked to frothy perfection. As I sipped the tea, I gazed out at the carefully crafted landscape, feeling a sense of deep contentment wash over me. It was a moment of perfect harmony, a fusion of nature, art, and culture.

Leaving the tranquility of Ritsurin Garden, I made my way to Shikoku Village, an open-air museum showcasing historical buildings from around the island. It was a journey back in time, a chance to glimpse into the lives of the people who once called this island home.

The village is a collection of traditional houses, farmhouses, and workshops, each carefully preserved and relocated to this site. As I wandered through the village, I felt as though I was stepping back in time. I explored the interiors of the houses, marveling at the simplicity and functionality of the design. I imagined families gathered around the hearth, sharing stories and meals, their lives intimately connected to the land.

One of the highlights of the village was the old Kabuki theater, a beautifully preserved wooden structure that once hosted traveling troupes of actors. I could almost hear the music and laughter, the echoes of performances long past. It reminded me of the vibrant storytelling traditions of Zimbabwe, where tales are passed down through generations, keeping the spirit of our ancestors alive.

For lunch, I stopped by Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop, a family restaurant that offered a comforting array of Japanese dishes. I opted for a set meal, a combination of rice, miso soup, and grilled fish. It was simple, yet satisfying, the flavors familiar and comforting. The restaurant was bustling with locals, families and friends sharing a meal, their voices filling the air with warmth and laughter.

After lunch, I decided to visit the Mountain bookshop, a charming little store specializing in books about the local flora and fauna. I love to read and learn about the natural world. Although I did not find a book I wanted, I enjoyed browsing the collection and chatting with the owner, a passionate advocate for environmental conservation.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Osusowake Shokudo Mado for dinner, a cafeteria known for its heartwarming atmosphere and community spirit. The name Osusowake means sharing something with others, and that is exactly what this place embodies. The owner, Ms. Chimi Suyama, has created a space where people can connect, share a meal, and support one another. It reminded me of the spirit of Ubuntu, the African philosophy of interconnectedness, the belief that I am because we are.

The menu changes daily, depending on what vegetables Ms. Suyama receives from local farmers. The food was simple, wholesome, and delicious, each dish prepared with love and care. I sat at a table with a group of locals, sharing stories and laughter, feeling a sense of belonging that transcended cultural differences. It was a reminder that no matter where we come from, we all share the same basic needs: food, connection, and community.

As I walked back to my accommodation, the stars began to emerge in the night sky, twinkling like diamonds scattered across a velvet cloth. The air was cool and still, the sounds of the city fading into a gentle hum. I reflected on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful island and connect with its people.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Onsen Main Building. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery, another chance to immerse myself in the rich culture and history of Shikoku Island. The promise of history and relaxation beckons, and I am eager to answer its call. Perhaps I'll even stop by the Irish Pub Amontillado for a nightcap – a little taste of the familiar amidst the exotic.

This solo journey is proving to be more than just a vacation; it's a pilgrimage of sorts, a chance to reconnect with myself and the world around me. It's a reminder that even in the midst of chaos and uncertainty, there is always beauty to be found, always kindness to be shared, and always a reason to keep exploring. The Shikoku Chuo Paper Festival also seems to be of interest, especially the Kami Odori paper dance. If time permits, I will certainly try to attend it.

And as I drift off to sleep, I carry with me the whispers of old Japan, the gentle rustling of leaves in Ritsurin Garden, the echoes of laughter in Shikoku Village, and the warmth of human connection in Osusowake Shokudo Mado. These are the memories I will cherish, the stories I will share, and the lessons I will carry with me long after I leave this enchanting island.
