A Valley Lost in Time

Today, I ventured deep into the heart of Shikoku, a world away from the bustling cities I'm accustomed to. It was a day of exploration, of stepping back in time, and connecting with the raw, unfiltered beauty of Japan's Iya Valley. The air was thick with humidity, a typical summer day, but the promise of ancient stories and breathtaking vistas kept me going. The journey was a reminder of why I started this blog – to share the hidden gems and cultural richness that our world has to offer.

My day began with a simple breakfast at Ombelico. Though I usually prefer a traditional Japanese breakfast, I decided to try something different. It was a quaint little spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of adventure. After a quick bite, I set off to explore the famed Iya Valley, a place shrouded in mist and legend. The drive itself was an experience, winding through narrow mountain roads with lush greenery on either side. I could almost feel the history seeping from the very earth.

The first stop was the iconic Vine Bridge of Iya Valley. As I approached, the sheer ingenuity of the structure struck me. Suspended high above the Iya River, the bridge is a testament to the resourcefulness of the people who built it centuries ago. Legend has it that these bridges were first constructed by the Heike clan, warriors who sought refuge in this remote valley after their defeat in the Gempei War. The idea was that the vines could be easily cut in case of enemy pursuit, turning the river valley into an impassable barrier. It's amazing to think that something so simple could hold such a powerful story.

Walking across the bridge was an experience in itself. The wooden slats were spaced far enough apart to give me a clear view of the river below, which sparkled in the sunlight. The bridge swayed gently with each step, adding a touch of excitement to the journey. I could feel the history beneath my feet, the echoes of warriors and villagers who had crossed this very bridge centuries before. It was a moment of pure connection to the past, a reminder of the resilience and ingenuity of the human spirit.

The Iya Valley is a place where time seems to stand still, where ancient traditions and breathtaking landscapes combine to create an unforgettable experience.

After conquering the vine bridge, it was time for lunch. I headed to Tataki Kobo, a local restaurant known for its traditional dishes. I decided to try the *katsuo no tataki*, seared bonito tuna, a local specialty. It was absolutely delicious, the smoky flavor of the seared fish perfectly complemented by the fresh onions and garlic. I thought of David, who would have loved this dish. He always appreciates trying new foods, and I made a mental note to try and recreate it for him back home in Stratford.

As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had brought me here. From my childhood in Gweru, Zimbabwe, to my life in Canada, and now this solo adventure in Japan, life has been full of unexpected twists and turns. I thought of Thandiwe and how much she would have loved to see the bridge. I imagined her little eyes wide with wonder. I promised myself I would bring her here one day.

With a full stomach and a renewed sense of adventure, I continued my exploration of the Iya Valley. I drove along the winding mountain roads, stopping to take in the breathtaking views. The valley was a tapestry of green, with lush forests clinging to the steep slopes. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city. I could see why the Heike clan had chosen this place as their refuge. It was a sanctuary, a place of peace and tranquility.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I made my way to Dining Room Hibari for dinner. The restaurant is known for its katsudon, and I was eager to try it. I was not disappointed. The pork cutlet was perfectly crispy, and the egg was light and fluffy. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

After dinner, I decided to experience a bit of local nightlife. I stopped by Bar Kohno, a cozy little spot, where I met some locals. We talked, laughed, and shared stories over drinks. It was a reminder that no matter where we come from, we all share a common humanity. The bartender whipped up a cocktail with local citrus that was both refreshing and a bit mysterious, much like the valley itself. Sipping on my drink, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. I was far from home, but I felt strangely connected to this place, to its people, and to its history.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Ritsurin Garden and Shikoku Village. I'm looking forward to exploring these new places and discovering more about the culture and history of Shikoku Island. But for now, I'm content to reflect on the day's adventures and savor the memories I've made.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a moment to look up at the stars. The sky was clear and the stars were bright, a reminder of the vastness of the universe and the smallness of our place in it. It was a humbling experience, a reminder to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the world around us. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore and connect with a culture so different from my own. It's these experiences that make life so rich and rewarding, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

This journey has been a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing the unknown and seeking out new experiences. As I continue my journey through Shikoku Island, I'm excited to share more stories and insights with you. Stay tuned for more adventures!

My thoughts drift back to Stratford, to David and Thandiwe. I miss them dearly, but I know that this journey is not just for me. It's for them too. It's a way for me to broaden my horizons, to learn and grow, and to bring back stories and experiences that will enrich our lives together. And perhaps, one day, we'll all come back here together, to walk across the vine bridge, taste the *katsuo no tataki*, and experience the magic of the Iya Valley.

Looking back on today, I realize that the Iya Valley is more than just a place. It's an experience, a journey into the heart of old Japan. It's a place where ancient traditions and breathtaking landscapes combine to create something truly special. And as I continue my exploration of Shikoku Island, I know that this is just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.
