Nature's Embrace: Waterfalls and Mythical Rocks

Today was a day of embracing the natural beauty of Shikoku, a welcome change after our explorations of the island's cultural treasures. It's amazing how quickly the pace changes here; one day we're immersed in ancient temples, and the next we're hiking through lush landscapes. Hans, Saoirse, and I set out early, eager to discover the hidden gems that Kochi Prefecture had to offer. I was especially excited, having packed my camera and a sense of adventure, ready to capture the essence of this stunning island.

Our first stop was Okamura for breakfast. This cozy little spot was nestled in Nankoku, and it was just the kind of place I adore—authentic and inviting. The menu featured traditional dishes, and we decided to try a bit of everything. Saoirse, surprisingly, was the most adventurous, happily tasting the grilled meats and fresh sashimi. Hans enjoyed some sake, while I stuck to green tea, savoring the warm atmosphere. It was the perfect way to start our day, fueling up for the adventures ahead. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. It reminded me of the small pubs back in Westport, where everyone knows each other and the conversation flows as freely as the drinks. It's these little moments of connection that truly make a trip memorable.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we headed towards the Amegaeri Waterfall. The drive itself was a treat, winding through verdant hills and alongside crystal-clear streams. As we approached the waterfall, the air grew cooler, and the sound of rushing water filled our ears. The Amegaeri Waterfall is truly a sight to behold. The cascade tumbles down with such force and grace, surrounded by lush greenery. We spent a good hour simply admiring the view, taking photos, and breathing in the fresh, misty air. Saoirse was fascinated, clambering over rocks to get a closer look, while Hans and I enjoyed the tranquility of the scene. It was a perfect moment of serenity, a reminder of the simple beauty of nature. I couldn't help but think of a quote from one of my favorite Irish poets:

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Next on our list was the intriguing Dragon Rock. I had read about this unique rock formation and was eager to see it for myself. The legend surrounding the rock spoke of ancient dragons and mystical powers, adding an air of mystery to the site. As we approached, the rock did indeed resemble a dragon, its jagged edges forming a mythical silhouette. Saoirse, ever imaginative, was immediately captivated, inventing stories about the dragon and its adventures. We explored the area, marveling at the rock's unique shape and the stunning views from its vantage point. It was a fun and whimsical experience, a testament to the power of nature's artistry.

For lunch, we decided to try Tataki Kobo, a restaurant known for its local culinary delights. Kochi Prefecture is famous for its *katsuo no tataki*, seared skipjack tuna, and I was determined to try it. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. We ordered the *tataki* and were not disappointed. The fish was perfectly seared, with a smoky flavor that complemented the fresh garlic and citrusy *ponzu* sauce. Saoirse, surprisingly, loved it, devouring her portion with gusto. Hans and I savored every bite, appreciating the unique flavors of the region. It was a culinary highlight of our trip so far, a true taste of Shikoku.

After lunch, we took a detour to Island Mishima, a shop known for its local products and souvenirs. I wanted to pick up a few gifts for friends back in Berlin and perhaps a little something for myself. The shop was filled with an array of interesting items, from local crafts to regional delicacies. I found some beautiful handmade pottery and a selection of local teas, perfect gifts for my tea-loving friends. Saoirse, of course, gravitated towards the sweets, choosing a colorful assortment of candies. It was a fun and festive stop, a chance to support local artisans and bring a piece of Shikoku back home.

As evening approached, we made our way to Japanese Cuisine Shiba for dinner. This restaurant promised a new take on traditional Japanese cuisine, and I was eager to see what they had to offer. The ambiance was elegant and refined, with a calm and inviting atmosphere. We opted for the *kaiseki* course, a multi-course meal that showcased the chef's creativity and skill. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. From delicate sashimi to savory grilled meats, every bite was a delight. Saoirse, surprisingly well-behaved, enjoyed the experience, trying new and interesting flavors. Hans and I savored the exquisite meal, appreciating the attention to detail and the innovative approach to Japanese cuisine. It was a fitting end to a day filled with natural beauty and culinary delights.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Shikoku has a way of surprising you, of revealing its hidden treasures one by one. Tomorrow, we will explore the Kurushima Strait Observatory and the Statues of the Three Tosa Samurai, and perhaps end the day at Bar Kohno. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us, what new stories we will uncover. Until then, *slán go fóill* from Shikoku!
