Day 12: Embracing Nature's Majesty: A Day of Gorges and Local Flavors in Shikoku
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Ōboke and Ōkubo Gorges, and savor authentic Kochi cuisine on a memorable family adventure.
A Day of Natural Wonders
Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the raw, untamed beauty of Shikoku's gorges and savoring the local flavors that make this island so unique. It’s days like these that remind me why we embarked on this family adventure in the first place – to discover hidden gems and create lasting memories together.
Our day began in Nankoku Osone, where we enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone. This charming spot is known for its authentic charcoal-grilled yakitori and other local dishes, served in a Showa retro atmosphere. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration, and Saoirse especially loved the cozy, welcoming ambiance. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home, and Hans was particularly impressed with the quality of the charcoal used for grilling. I must admit, starting the day with such a hearty and delicious meal really set the tone for the adventures that lay ahead.
With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the famed Ōboke Gorge. As we drove along the steep curves of Highway 32 in Tokushima Prefecture, the landscape transformed into a dramatic display of rock formations rising from the Yoshino River. It was a sight to behold, a testament to the ancient seismic activity that shaped this region. The gorge stretches for about 8 kilometers, and the Yoshino River has carved a stunning path through the rocks, creating shapes that seem almost sculpted.

We decided to take a boat tour to truly appreciate the gorge's beauty. As we glided along the crystal-clear waters, our guide pointed out interesting rock formations, many resembling animals. The river's colors shifted from deep greens to turquoise, providing a vibrant contrast to the white rocks. Saoirse was captivated, her eyes wide with wonder as she spotted different shapes in the rocks. Hans, ever the photographer, snapped away, trying to capture the essence of this natural masterpiece. I simply sat back, enjoying the serenity and the stunning views. It's moments like these that make me feel so grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience the world with my family.
The earth has music for those who listen.
After the boat tour, we continued our exploration, heading towards Ōkubo Gorge. While perhaps not as widely known as Ōboke, Ōkubo Gorge offered its own unique charm. The area is known for its natural beauty, and it was a perfect spot for a leisurely hike. We spent a few hours wandering through the trails, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of nature. Saoirse, always the adventurous one, led the way, pointing out interesting plants and insects. Hans and I followed behind, enjoying the peace and quiet of the forest. It was a refreshing change of pace from the bustling city life of Berlin, and I felt my stress melting away with each step.

For lunch, we stopped at Osusowake Shokudo Mado, a local cafeteria in Kami. This unique spot is more than just a place to eat; it's a community hub where people share food and connect with one another. The concept of Osusowake, which means sharing something with warmth, is at the heart of this cafeteria. The owner, Ms. Chimi Suyama, sources vegetables from local farmers and creates daily menus based on what's available. It was heartwarming to see how the community supports this initiative, with locals donating ingredients and helping out in the kitchen.

We enjoyed a delicious and affordable meal, savoring the fresh, local flavors. Saoirse was particularly fond of the chicken piccata, while Hans appreciated the variety of vegetables. I loved the sense of community and the feeling that we were supporting a worthwhile cause. It's experiences like these that make travel so rewarding, allowing us to connect with local cultures and contribute to the well-being of the communities we visit.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a stop at Plugs Market Kochi Store. This charming gift shop offers a diverse range of products, from local crafts to cosmetics and home goods. It was a perfect place to pick up some souvenirs and gifts for friends and family back home. Saoirse found a cute little trinket to remind her of our trip, while Hans picked up a few local snacks to share with his colleagues. I couldn't resist buying a beautiful handmade scarf, a perfect reminder of our time in Shikoku. The store was bustling with activity, and the friendly staff were eager to assist us with our purchases. It was a fun and vibrant atmosphere, a perfect way to end our day of exploration. I even found a travel adapter since I had forgotten ours!

For dinner, we decided to try Amekaze Shokudo, a local eatery known for its Japanese-style Western cuisine. This cozy restaurant had a unique charm, with a menu that blended familiar Western dishes with local Japanese flavors. We tried a variety of dishes, from hamburg steak to seafood gratin, each with its own distinct and delicious twist. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the staff were attentive and friendly. It was a perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring, and we all left feeling satisfied and content.

As I sit here now, reflecting on our day, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had. From the majestic gorges to the heartwarming local eateries, Shikoku has truly captured our hearts. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Ryugado Museum and Todoroki Falls. I am excited to see what new adventures await us as we continue our journey through this beautiful island.
On a side note, I was reading about a novel called Hakkenden. It seems to be a classic Japanese tale with multiple adaptations. It would be interesting to delve into its themes of friendship and morality, especially after witnessing the community spirit at Osusowake Shokudo Mado. Perhaps I'll pick up a copy when we are at Plugs Market again.
“The best view comes after the hardest climb.” I definitely felt like I earned that view today!
Tomorrow, we're off to explore the Ryugado Museum and the Todoroki Falls. After that, we might stop by the Irish Pub Amontillado for a nightcap. I am excited for what tomorrow holds!
