A Blue Beginning
After a long journey from Berlin, I've finally arrived in Chefchaouen, Morocco, and let me tell you, the rumors are true – it's blue, blue, everywhere! Today was all about immersing myself in this unique city, getting lost in its winding alleys, and soaking up the local culture. It's only the first day of my solo adventure, and I already know this will be an unforgettable experience.

The bus ride from Tangier was scenic, offering glimpses of the Moroccan countryside, but nothing could have prepared me for the moment I stepped into Chefchaouen's medina. The entire town seemed to be painted in various shades of blue, from the palest sky blue to the deepest indigo. It was like walking into a dream, a serene and calming escape from the bustling cities I'm used to.

First things first, I checked into Hotel Casa Miguel, my home for the next nine days. It's a cozy little place with a fantastic location, right in the heart of the action. The staff was incredibly welcoming, offering me a refreshing mint tea as I settled in. I swear, that mint tea is quickly becoming my favorite thing about Morocco!

Once I dropped off my bags, I was ready to explore. I started with the Chefchaouen Medina, the old town, and it was an absolute maze of narrow streets and vibrant colors. Every corner turned revealed a new photo opportunity, with intricately decorated doorways, tiny shops selling local crafts, and children playing in the squares. It was a feast for the senses!

I quickly learned that getting lost was part of the experience. I wandered aimlessly, letting the blue walls guide me, discovering hidden courtyards and tiny workshops. The locals were incredibly friendly, always ready with a smile and a greeting. Unlike some of the larger cities, there was a sense of calm and tranquility here, making it easy to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

For breakfast, I decided to try Cafe Clock, a place I had read about in several travel blogs. It was a bit tricky to find, tucked away in one of the narrow alleys, but definitely worth the effort. The cafe had a lovely terrace with panoramic views of the town, and the menu offered a variety of Moroccan and international dishes. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, which included bread, olives, cheese, and, of course, more mint tea. The food was delicious, and the view was simply breathtaking.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Kasbah, a historic fortress located in the heart of the medina. Built in the 15th century, the Kasbah was originally intended to defend against the Portuguese. I explored the ramparts, climbed the towers, and learned about the history of this fascinating structure. The views from the top were incredible, offering a different perspective of the blue city.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the warmth of its people and the serenity of its atmosphere.

Inside the Kasbah, I visited the Ethnographic Museum, which showcased the local culture and traditions. There were displays of traditional clothing, musical instruments, and artifacts from the region's history. It was a great way to learn more about the people and the heritage of Chefchaouen.

By lunchtime, I was starting to get hungry again, so I decided to try Chez Hicham, another restaurant recommended by several locals. It was a small, unassuming place, but the food was fantastic. I ordered a Moroccan chicken salad, and it was bursting with flavor. The service was friendly and efficient, and the prices were very reasonable.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some shopping. Chefchaouen is known for its handicrafts, particularly wool garments, woven blankets, and woven baskets. I visited Hibart Souvenirs Shop, where I found a beautiful handwoven blanket to take back home as a souvenir. Of course, bargaining is part of the experience, so I haggled a bit with the shopkeeper before settling on a price. It's all part of the fun!

As the day drew to a close, I found myself back in the main square, Place Uta el-Hammam, soaking up the lively atmosphere. The square was filled with people, both locals and tourists, enjoying the cool evening air. I decided to have dinner at Restaurant Morisco, which had outdoor seating overlooking the square. I ordered a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, and it was absolutely delicious. The perfect way to end my first day in Chefchaouen.

One thing I noticed today was the distinct lack of alcohol in Chefchaouen. It's a much more conservative town than Berlin, and alcohol isn't readily available. It's a different vibe, but I appreciate the focus on culture and community. It reminds me a bit of growing up in Westport, where community spirit was always strong.

As I reflect on my first day, I am filled with a sense of peace and contentment. Chefchaouen is a truly special place, a hidden gem nestled in the Rif Mountains. The blue walls, the friendly people, and the relaxed atmosphere have already captured my heart. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Ras El Ma, a natural spring just outside the medina, and Plaza Uta el Hamman, the heart of Chefchaouen. I also intend to try some more local restaurants like Café & restaurant Meftah for breakfast, Assaada for lunch and Tissemlal for dinner. And maybe, just maybe, I'll indulge in a bit of evening relaxation at Cafe Clock.

But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure in the blue city.

One thing I did forget to pack was a universal travel adapter. Note to self: buy one tomorrow!

Chefchaouen is a town where time seems to slow down, where the simple act of wandering becomes an adventure, and where the color blue takes on a whole new meaning. It's a place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself, a place to find peace and inspiration in the most unexpected corners. I'm so grateful to be here, and I can't wait to share more of my experiences with you all. Good night from the blue pearl of Morocco!
