Blue Reflections: Discovering Chefchaouen's Heart

Today was a day of wandering, of letting the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen guide my feet and my thoughts. I set out with no particular agenda, eager to soak in the atmosphere and discover the hidden corners of this enchanting town. It’s amazing how a place can seep into your soul, leaving you feeling both invigorated and utterly at peace.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah. I opted for some traditional Moroccan pancakes with honey and a strong coffee to fuel my explorations. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in this picturesque setting. It was a great way to start the day, and I even managed to practice some of my limited French with the friendly staff. I swear, someday I will be fluent! Hans keeps telling me I should focus on German, but the heart wants what it wants.

First on my list was Ras El Ma. I followed the sound of rushing water, the air growing cooler and fresher as I approached. It's a series of small cascades and springs that emerge from the mountainside, providing a vital water source for the town. The area was alive with activity. Women were washing clothes in the stream, children played nearby, and locals gathered to chat and cool off. It was a slice of everyday life, a world away from the tourist bustle of the medina. I spent a good hour simply watching the scene unfold, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such authentic moments. It was a good reminder of why I love to travel solo – the freedom to linger, to observe, to connect with the rhythm of a place without distraction. I even saw a small hotel nearby, Hotel Ras El Maa, which looked like a tranquil place to stay.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.

Next, I made my way to Plaza Uta el Hamman, the heart of Chefchaouen’s medina. The square was buzzing with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists. Cafes lined the perimeter, their terraces spilling out onto the cobblestones. The air was filled with the aroma of spices, grilled meats, and sweet mint tea. I found a spot at Assaada for lunch, a restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. I ordered a tagine with chicken and olives, savoring the rich flavors and tender meat. It was the perfect fuel for an afternoon of exploring. The square itself is lovely, and there were many hotels nearby, such as Casa El Haouta.

After lunch, I wandered through the labyrinthine streets of the medina, getting delightfully lost in the maze of blue buildings. Every corner revealed a new photo opportunity, a new detail to admire. I popped into small shops selling handcrafted goods, admiring the intricate woodwork, colorful textiles, and aromatic spices. I even picked up a small, hand-painted bowl as a souvenir for Saoirse. She loves collecting little treasures from my trips, and I know she'll adore this one. It reminds me of a miniature version of our kitchen bowls back in Berlin.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn to Cafe Clock, a popular spot known for its relaxed atmosphere and rooftop terrace. I ordered a mint tea and settled in to watch the sunset over the town. The sky was ablaze with color, the blue buildings below taking on a warm, golden glow. It was a magical moment, a perfect end to a day of exploration. Cafe Clock seems to be a popular spot, with vegetarian options and live music.

For dinner, I decided to try Tissemlal, a restaurant recommended by several locals. It's part of the Casa Hassan Hotel, and it has a reputation for serving authentic Moroccan dishes in a beautiful setting. I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional Moroccan lanterns and candles creating a warm ambiance. I ordered a couscous dish with vegetables and almonds, savoring the delicate flavors and textures. The service was impeccable, and I felt truly welcomed. The terrace looked amazing, and the restaurant is known for traditional Moroccan food.

As I walked back to Hotel Casa Miguel, the town was quiet and peaceful. The air was cool and crisp, and the stars were shining brightly overhead. I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Chefchaouen had captured my heart, and I knew I would never forget this solo adventure. I thought of Hans and Saoirse back in Berlin, and I smiled. I missed them, of course, but I also knew that this time alone was precious. It was a chance to reconnect with myself, to recharge my batteries, and to appreciate the simple joys of life.

Tomorrow, I plan to venture further afield, exploring the Parc National de Talassemtane [if gte mte] and perhaps even attempting the Jebel El-Kelaa Summit [if gte mte]. I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the natural beauty of the region and challenging myself physically. I also plan to stop by CHAOUEN GIFTS for some souvenirs [if gte mte]. But for now, I’m content to simply savor the memories of today, the blue reflections of Chefchaouen dancing in my mind.

Good night from Chefchaouen!
