Saturday in the Blue Pearl

Today was all about soaking in the heart of Chefchaouen, wandering through its bustling squares and hidden corners. It’s amazing how each day here brings a new perspective, a different shade of blue to appreciate. I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to explore, eager to see what this charming city had in store for me today.

My day started with a delightful breakfast at Bab Souk. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with some traditional Moroccan fare. I opted for a classic: eggs with khlea (preserved meat), accompanied by warm bread and a steaming glass of mint tea. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The friendly atmosphere and delicious food made it a memorable start to my Saturday. It reminded me of the simple joys of a hearty breakfast back home in Westport, setting the tone for a day of discovery.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I made my way to Bab El Ain. This gate, one of the entrances to the medina, is steeped in history, and it's impossible not to feel a sense of awe as you pass through it. The name 'Bab El Ain' translates to 'The Gate of the Spring', and it is indeed near a natural spring where locals gather. I took a moment to admire the architecture and watch the daily life unfold around me. Children were playing, vendors were setting up their stalls, and the air was filled with the sounds of chatter and laughter. It was a vibrant scene that captured the essence of Chefchaouen.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people.

Next on my list was Place El Haouta. As I wandered through the maze of blue alleyways, I eventually stumbled upon this picturesque square. The name 'Hawta' means 'surrounded' or 'walled in,' which perfectly describes the intimate feel of this space. The square is adorned with blue-tiled buildings featuring classic arches and intricate iron grills. The beautifully patterned and cobbled floor added to its allure. I found a spot on one of the benches and simply watched the world go by. A four-sided fountain in the center of the square provided refreshing drinking water for the locals. It was a perfect place to relax and soak in the unique atmosphere of Chefchaouen. The square was alive with street performers and artisans showcasing their talents. I even saw a film crew setting up, apparently scouting for locations – how exciting! I remembered Hans mentioning that he had read about Chefchaouen being used as a filming location, and it was fascinating to witness it firsthand. I made a mental note to tell Saoirse all about it; she’s a budding film enthusiast.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Jbaria, drawn in by the promise of authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with beautiful ceramic tiles and intricate woodwork that reflected the local culture. I decided to try the lamb tagine, a dish highly recommended by locals. The lamb was tender and flavorful, infused with aromatic spices and served with couscous. It was absolutely delicious! I paired it with a refreshing glass of mint tea, the perfect complement to the rich flavors of the tagine. The service was friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. It was a delightful culinary experience that I won't soon forget.

After lunch, I was in the mood for some shopping, so I headed to La Botica De La Abuela De Aladdin. This charming shop is a treasure trove of handmade products, from soaps and perfumes to traditional remedies. I spent ages browsing the shelves, inhaling the intoxicating scents and admiring the beautiful craftsmanship. The shop owner was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about her products, explaining the ingredients and their benefits with infectious enthusiasm. I ended up buying a selection of soaps and a small bottle of argan oil, perfect souvenirs to take back to Berlin. I could already imagine Saoirse enjoying the sweet-smelling soaps during her bath time. The shop itself was small from the outside, but packed with wonders!

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn back to the heart of the medina. I decided to revisit Place El Haouta, hoping to capture some photos in the soft afternoon light. As suggested, the square was even more enchanting in the afternoon. The warm hues of the sunset illuminated the blue buildings, creating a magical atmosphere. I snapped some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the scene. A local shared some drinking water from the fountain with me, which was much appreciated in the warm weather. The square was bustling with activity, as locals and tourists gathered to enjoy the evening air. I sat on a bench, sipping a refreshing orange juice and watching the world go by. It was a perfect moment of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

For dinner, I decided to try MIDO'S, a restaurant known for its fast food with a Moroccan twist. I was curious to see what they had to offer, and I wasn't disappointed. The menu was diverse, with options ranging from burgers and tacos to paninis and falafel. I opted for a falafel panini, which was delicious and satisfying. They happily veganized anything that was possible on their menu. The atmosphere was lively and energetic, with music playing and people chatting and laughing. It was a fun and casual dining experience, perfect for a Saturday night.

As I walked back to Hotel Casa Miguel, I reflected on the day's adventures. I had explored the heart of Chefchaouen, discovered hidden gems, and savored local flavors. I felt a deep sense of connection to this enchanting city and its people. I was grateful for the opportunity to experience its unique charm and beauty. I thought of Hans and Saoirse back in Berlin, and I couldn't wait to share my stories with them. I knew they would love Chefchaouen just as much as I did.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Chefchaouen Gate and Plaza Mohammed V. I think I might treat myself to a drink at Restaurant Bar Chaouen in the evening, too. It's hard to believe that my solo adventure is nearing its end. Each day has been a new discovery, a deeper immersion into the heart of Morocco. I'm already cherishing these memories, knowing they'll stay with me long after I've left the blue streets of Chefchaouen.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a note to buy a universal travel adapter when I get back to Berlin. It’s a small thing, but it would have made life so much easier on this trip. Oh well, live and learn!

I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.
