Sunday Strolls and Culinary Finds in Chefchaouen
Today was a day of wandering through Chefchaouen, soaking in the atmosphere and discovering hidden gems. It's amazing how much character this blue city holds, and I felt like I was constantly stumbling upon something new and enchanting. It was also a day to enjoy some amazing food.
My day began with the promise of exploration, and Chefchaouen certainly delivered. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from Berlin's city smog, and I was eager to lose myself in the labyrinthine streets. I had a simple plan: to visit the Chefchaouen Gate and Plaza Mohammed V, but as usual, the day unfolded in its own delightful way. After all, sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones you don't plan. As I always say to Hans and Saoirse, it’s important to be open to unexpected adventures!
Through the Gates
My first stop was the Chefchaouen Gate, also known as Bab El Ain. It's more than just an entrance; it's a threshold between the old city and the new. Standing there, I could feel the history seeping from the ancient stones, imagining countless travelers who had passed through before me. The gate itself is quite impressive, but what I loved most was the vibrant activity surrounding it. Food vendors lined the entrance, selling everything from cactus fruit to hot chickpea cakes. I couldn't resist trying a bit of the chickpea cake, which was warm and surprisingly savory. It was the perfect way to start my day of culinary exploration.

Sometimes, the most memorable moments are found not in grand monuments, but in the simple, everyday experiences that connect us to a place.
Leaving the gate behind, I wandered deeper into the medina, letting the blue-washed walls guide my steps. The beauty of Chefchaouen lies in its simplicity. The way the sunlight catches the different shades of blue, the intricate details of the doorways, the scent of spices wafting from the shops – it’s a feast for the senses. I made a mental note to bring Hans and Saoirse here someday; they would absolutely love it. Saoirse would be in her element, snapping photos of every colorful corner.
A Plaza of Peace and People
Next on my list was Plaza Mohammed V. This plaza is the heart of the modern city, a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. As I approached, I could hear the sounds of children playing and the murmur of conversations. The plaza is surrounded by beautiful gardens, providing a tranquil escape from the bustling streets. I found a bench under a shady tree and simply sat, watching the world go by. It was a perfect spot to soak in the atmosphere and observe the daily life of Chefchaouen.

There wasn't a specific event taking place, but the plaza itself was alive with activity. Families were picnicking on the grass, friends were chatting over coffee, and street vendors were selling their wares. I even saw a group of musicians playing traditional Moroccan music, filling the air with enchanting melodies. It was a vibrant and welcoming scene, and I felt grateful to be a part of it.
A Culinary Journey
Of course, no day in Chefchaouen would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. For breakfast, I headed to Cremeri Elmaataoui, a charming café known for its delicious pastries and desserts. I ordered a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen (a type of pancake) with honey and a strong, sweet mint tea. It was the perfect way to fuel up for my day of exploring. The Cremeri Elmaataoui is known for its pastries and ice creams. The interior is inviting and cozy. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a sweet treat. I made a mental note to return later for an ice cream.

Lunch was at Restaurant Hamsa. I had read some great reviews about their falafel, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant is small and unassuming, but the food was incredible. The falafel was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, served with a generous helping of hummus and pita bread. It was a simple but satisfying meal, and I left feeling completely content. The Hamsa restaurant is considered the best vegan place in the city. It has a terrace with beautiful views from the top.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Restaurant Lalla Messaouda for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended for its traditional Moroccan dishes, and I was excited to try their tagine. I ordered the lamb tagine with couscous, and it was absolutely divine. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the couscous was light and fluffy. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end my day in Chefchaouen. The Restaurant Lalla Messaouda offers cooking classes.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Restaurant Bar Chaouen. It's a popular spot for both locals and tourists, known for its lively atmosphere and friendly staff. I ordered a local beer and sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air. There was a football match playing on the television, and the bar was filled with cheering fans. It was a fun and energetic atmosphere, and I felt like I was truly experiencing the local culture. The Restaurant Bar Chaouen is open from 9 AM until midnight.

Reflections on a Blue Day
As I walked back to Hotel Casa Miguel, I reflected on the day's adventures. Chefchaouen had exceeded all my expectations. It's a city that captivates the senses and nourishes the soul. I felt a sense of peace and contentment that I hadn't felt in a long time. Maybe it was the calming blue hues, or the friendly locals, or the delicious food – whatever it was, Chefchaouen had worked its magic on me.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Kasbah and Park Sidi Abdelhamid. I’m also planning to do some shopping for local crafts. I’m particularly interested in finding some unique souvenirs to bring back to Hans and Saoirse. I'm excited to see what other treasures this blue city holds. I’m also looking forward to trying out Toda Creperie & Ice Cream for breakfast, Restaurant Ali Baba for lunch, and Chez Hicham for dinner. I’ve heard great things about all three places, and I’m eager to sample their culinary delights. Maybe I’ll even find a universal travel adapter – a girl can dream, right?
For now, though, it's time to rest and recharge. Goodnight from Chefchaouen, the blue pearl of Morocco!
