A Day of Heights and Delights

Today was a day of embracing the great outdoors and the delicious flavours of Chefchaouen. From scaling mountain peaks to savouring local cuisine, it was an experience that truly invigorated the senses and deepened my appreciation for this beautiful region of Morocco.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Sindibad. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with flavorful dips, local bread, and a steaming glass of mint tea. It was the perfect fuel for the adventurous day ahead. The cafe's warm ambiance and friendly staff made it a delightful start, and I knew I'd made the right choice. I savoured every bite, knowing I needed the energy for the hike ahead.

With breakfast settling nicely, I set off towards Parc National de Talassemtane. The park itself is a sprawling Mediterranean forest ecosystem, rich with endemic plant species and, if you’re lucky, glimpses of wildlife. My main goal for the day was to hike to the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa.

The hike started with a gentle incline. As I ascended, the trail became steeper, but it was manageable. The paths were well-marked, making it easy to navigate. I paused frequently to catch my breath and take in the panoramic views of Chefchaouen and the Rif Mountains. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city. I could feel my muscles working, but the stunning scenery kept me motivated.

The journey is the destination, especially when that journey involves breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment.

The final ascent to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit was challenging, requiring a bit of scrambling in some spots. There were moments where I had to use my hands as much as my feet to navigate the rocky terrain. However, the effort was worth it. Reaching the summit, I was rewarded with awe-inspiring views that stretched for miles. I could even catch a glimpse of the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. I took some time to capture unforgettable photos and simply soak in the beauty. It was a moment of pure serenity and accomplishment.

According to other hikers, the trail can be tricky to follow in spots. Some even recommend following the road up, though I personally prefer the challenge and immersion of the trail itself. I was glad I'd worn my hiking boots as they were much needed on the steeper sections. Proper hiking boots are recommended for comfort and safety, especially on the steeper parts.

After descending Jebel El-Kelaa, I made my way back to Chefchaouen, ready for a well-deserved lunch. I chose Restaurant Triana, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and inviting atmosphere. I decided on the lamb tagine, a local specialty slow-cooked to perfection with aromatic spices. It was absolutely delicious, and the friendly staff made the experience even more enjoyable. It was the perfect way to refuel after a strenuous hike.

In the afternoon, I strolled through the medina, eventually finding myself drawn to CHAOUEN GIFTS. It was a treasure trove of Moroccan artistry, filled with traditional rugs, handcrafted jewellery, and decorative items. I picked up a few souvenirs for Hans and Saoirse, wanting to bring a piece of Chefchaouen back to Berlin with me. The shop was a celebration of Moroccan artistry, and I enjoyed browsing through the various items on display.

For dinner, I decided to try Le Coin, a café-restaurant with a varied menu. The dark interior drew me in, and I found the ambiance to be quite relaxing. I opted for a pizza, which was fairly large and had plenty of toppings. It was tasty and satisfying, a perfect end to a long day.

As I reflect on my day, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and culinary delights of Chefchaouen. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen and take a guided tour of the Blue Medina. I’m also looking forward to trying Patisserie Pain Chaouen for breakfast and Bar Oum Rabie for a relaxing evening. Each day here brings new adventures and discoveries, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds.

One thing I realised I forgot to pack was a universal travel adapter, which would have been useful for charging my devices. I also wish I had brought a guidebook on Moroccan culture to enhance my understanding of the local customs and traditions. These are definitely items I will remember for my next trip.

Chefchaouen continues to enchant me with its beauty and charm. It's a place where adventure and relaxation go hand in hand, and I'm so glad I decided to embark on this solo journey. I can't wait to share more of my experiences with you all! I am also inspired by Gieves & Hawkes' Spring Summer 2025 Ready-to-Wear collection, which captures the essence of modern exploration and the beauty of places like Chefchaouen. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about immersing oneself in different cultures and traditions.
