Solo Cultural Immersion in Kyoto
Day 14: Farewell, Kyoto: Osaka's Skyline and Culinary Delights
Concluding my Kyoto adventure with a vibrant day trip to Osaka, exploring iconic landmarks and savoring diverse culinary experiences.
Osaka, Here I Come!
As my two weeks in Kyoto drew to a close, I decided to dedicate my final day to Osaka, a city known for its striking skyline and vibrant culinary scene. I wanted to experience some of what Osaka had to offer before heading back to Berlin. It felt like a fitting end to my solo adventure, a chance to soak in a different vibe before returning home to Hans and Saoirse.
The train ride from Kyoto to Osaka was quick and easy, a blur of passing landscapes. Arriving in Osaka, I immediately felt the change of pace. It's a city with a more modern, energetic feel compared to Kyoto's traditional charm. The first thing I wanted to see was Osaka Castle. After that I wanted to check out Umeda Sky Building, something I had been looking forward to for a while.
Stepping Back in Time at Osaka Castle
Osaka Castle was my first stop, and it was truly impressive. As I approached, the castle's grandeur became more and more apparent, with its towering walls and intricate details. The castle is steeped in history, and walking through its grounds felt like stepping back in time. The plum blossoms were just beginning to bloom, adding a splash of color to the already stunning scenery. Apparently, I just missed the start of the Osaka Castle Spring Festival, which includes illuminations at Nishinomaru Garden. Next year, I will have to plan my trip a bit later to see that as well.

I explored the castle museum, learning about the key figures and battles that shaped its past. The panoramic views from the top of the castle were incredible, offering a sweeping vista of Osaka's cityscape. It was easy to imagine feudal lords surveying their domain from this very spot. The castle grounds themselves were expansive, perfect for a leisurely stroll. I took my time, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful scenery. It was a welcome contrast to the bustling city outside.
Sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to immerse yourself in its history, allowing the stories of the past to resonate with the present.
Word has it that Osaka Castle Park is one of the best spots for cherry blossom viewing. While the cherry blossoms weren't in full bloom just yet, I could see the first signs of them starting to open up. I can only imagine how beautiful the park will be in a few weeks when the trees are covered in delicate pink blossoms. From late March to mid-April, the park hosts a spring festival with food trucks and even boat cruises. I will have to make a note to come back during that time to experience the full beauty of the cherry blossoms and the festive atmosphere.
Reaching for the Sky at Umeda Sky Building
Next on my list was the Umeda Sky Building, an architectural marvel known for its Floating Garden Observatory. The building itself is striking, with two towers connected by a circular structure high above the ground. The ascent to the observatory was an experience in itself, with glass-enclosed escalators offering thrilling views. As I stepped onto the Floating Garden Observatory, I was immediately struck by the panoramic views of Osaka. From 173 meters above the ground, the city stretched out before me in all its glory. I could see landmarks like Osaka Castle in the distance, as well as the sprawling cityscape and the bay. The Floating Garden itself was a unique and tranquil space, with greenery and pathways creating a serene atmosphere amidst the urban landscape.

I spent a good amount of time simply taking in the views, watching the city below me come to life. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden glow over Osaka. It was a magical moment, a perfect way to appreciate the beauty of the city. The Lumi Sky Walk, a path of light that appears at night, sounded equally enchanting. Maybe next time I'll visit in the evening to experience that as well. The Umeda Sky Building is more than just an observation deck; it's a unique architectural experience that offers a different perspective on Osaka. I'm glad I made the trip to see it for myself.
A Culinary Journey Through Osaka
No trip to Osaka would be complete without indulging in its renowned culinary scene. I had a few restaurants on my list that I wanted to try, each offering a different taste of Osaka's diverse flavors. First, I decided to try Kizahashi. However, I got a bit confused, as it seems there are two restaurants with that name, one in Kyoto and one in Osaka. I wanted to try the one near Kyoto station, so I decided to postpone that adventure to another time.
Next up was Khaos Spice Diner, known for its unique and flavorful spice curries. It had great reviews, so I decided to give it a try. The aroma of spices filled the air as I approached the diner, instantly whetting my appetite. The menu offered a variety of curries, each with its own distinct blend of flavors. I opted for the chef's special, a mix of three different curries served with rice and a variety of toppings. The curry was incredible, a perfect balance of spices and flavors that danced on my tongue. The atmosphere of the diner was laid-back and inviting, with reggae music playing in the background. It was a great spot for a solo diner like myself, a place to relax and enjoy a delicious meal.

For my final meal in Osaka, I wanted to try some traditional Kyoto cuisine. I headed to Kyoto cuisine Hanasaki Nishikiten, a restaurant that focuses on seasonal ingredients and traditional cooking methods. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a peaceful atmosphere that was a welcome contrast to the bustling city outside. I ordered a Kaiseki course, a multi-course meal that showcases the best of Kyoto's culinary traditions. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. From the delicate sashimi to the savory grilled fish, every bite was a delight. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey through Osaka and Kyoto, a reminder of the incredible flavors and experiences I've had during my trip.

A Touch of Design at D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO
Before heading back to Kyoto, I made a stop at D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO, a shop that focuses on long-life design and local products. The shop was located in a former tea house near Bukkoji Temple, adding to its unique charm. Inside, I found a variety of well-designed and thoughtfully crafted items, from kitchenware to furniture to clothing. It was a great place to find unique souvenirs and gifts, items that were both beautiful and functional. The shop also had a cafe, d-Shokudo Kyoto, which offered a menu featuring local ingredients. I didn't have time to eat there, but I made a mental note to try it next time I'm in Kyoto.

I ended up buying a few small items, including a set of ceramic tea cups and a handmade wooden spoon. They were perfect reminders of my trip, items that I would use and cherish for years to come. D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO was more than just a shop; it was a celebration of design and craftsmanship, a reminder of the importance of quality and sustainability.
Reflections on a Solo Journey
As the train pulled back into Kyoto Station, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. I had successfully navigated a new city on my own, experiencing its sights, sounds, and flavors. My solo journey to Kyoto and Osaka had been a transformative experience, a chance to step outside my comfort zone and discover new things about myself and the world around me. I was grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful country, to immerse myself in its culture, and to connect with its people. I'm already looking forward to my next adventure, wherever it may take me. It is time to go back to Berlin now, back to Hans and Saoirse. I miss them a lot and I am excited to share my experiences with them.
Tomorrow, I will be heading to the airport and flying back to Berlin. It's the end of my trip. I am excited to be home again and share my memories with my family.
