Whispers in the Bamboo

Today’s journey was a venture into the serene heart of Kyoto, a world away from the bustling city streets. It was a day of whispering bamboo, ancient temples, and cheeky monkeys, a perfect blend of nature and culture that left me feeling refreshed and inspired. As much as I love Berlin, sometimes I just need a day like this to reconnect with myself and the quiet beauty of the world.

My day began early, hopping on a train bound for Arashiyama. The journey itself was a treat, watching the landscape transform from urban sprawl to picturesque countryside. There’s something so calming about train travel in Japan; the rhythmic clatter of the tracks and the polite hum of conversation create a soothing atmosphere. It reminded me of train journeys through the Irish countryside as a child, gazing out the window at the passing fields. I’m so glad I remembered to pack my travel guidebook today, it's proving to be invaluable!

Stepping off the train, I was immediately enveloped by the charm of Arashiyama. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. The main street was already bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to explore this scenic haven. I could feel the energy, a vibrant buzz that promised a day full of discovery.

My first stop was the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. As I stepped into the grove, I was instantly transported to another world. Towering bamboo stalks stretched skyward, their slender forms swaying gently in the breeze. The sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the path below. It was an ethereal experience, a symphony of light and sound that soothed my soul. I took my time wandering through the grove, pausing to listen to the whispers of the bamboo and to marvel at the sheer scale of nature's artistry. Even though it's February, and not the peak season, there were still quite a few people around, but the forest held its magic nonetheless.

Leaving the bamboo forest, I made my way to Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This Zen temple is steeped in history and boasts a stunning garden that is considered one of the finest in Kyoto. I wandered through the temple grounds, admiring the intricate architecture and the serene beauty of the landscape. The garden was a masterpiece of design, with meticulously manicured trees, moss-covered stones, and a tranquil pond reflecting the surrounding hills. I spent a good hour simply sitting on a bench, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and contemplating the beauty of impermanence. I found a quiet spot overlooking the pond and closed my eyes, letting the gentle sounds of nature wash over me. It was a moment of pure serenity, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

After my moment of zen, I decided to embrace my adventurous side and hike up to Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. The trail was a bit steep, but the promise of playful monkeys and panoramic views spurred me onward. As I climbed higher, the city of Kyoto unfolded before me, a sprawling tapestry of rooftops and temples. Finally, I reached the summit and was greeted by a troop of adorable Japanese macaques. These little guys were full of energy, scampering around, grooming each other, and generally causing mischief. I purchased a bag of monkey food and had the delightful experience of feeding these furry creatures. They were surprisingly gentle, taking the food delicately from my hand. It was such fun watching them interact with each other and with the other visitors. I even managed to snap a few photos, capturing their playful antics and their endearing expressions. I was mindful to keep a respectful distance, remembering that these are wild animals in their natural habitat.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I made my way back down the mountain, my heart full of joy and my camera full of memories. Before heading back to Kyoto, I decided to treat myself to a late lunch. I had heard good things about Masayoshi Japanese Dining, so I decided to give it a try. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered a set meal featuring local Kyoto cuisine, a delightful array of flavors and textures that tantalized my taste buds. I savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and the care that went into each dish. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Reflecting on my day, I realized how much I appreciate these moments of solitude and exploration. Traveling solo allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to connect with the local culture, and to discover hidden gems that I might otherwise miss. As much as I love traveling with Hans and Saoirse, there's something special about venturing out on my own, pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, and embracing the unknown.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountainside, and Shimogamo Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kyoto. I might also pop into the Kyoto Crafts Store to pick up a souvenir or two. I'm already excited for another day of adventure in this captivating city. Good thing I packed my comfortable walking shoes!

And now, as I sit here in my hotel room, sipping a cup of green tea and listening to the gentle rain outside, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding us of the beauty and the wonder that exists in the world. It's a place where ancient traditions meet modern life, where nature and culture intertwine, and where every corner holds a new discovery. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

One thing I forgot to pack for this trip was my travel adapter and sunscreen. I will need to remember to buy these tomorrow.

There are a number of events taking place in Kyoto in February. Iwashimizu Hachimangū Setsubun Charge (February 2nd), Oni Yarai Shinji (February 3rd), Setsubun at Kitano Tenmangū (February 3rd), Heian Jingu Setsubun Oni Dance (February 3rd), Ohara Sanzen-in Daikondaki (February 8th - 11th), Kigen-sai (February 11th), Godai Rikison Ninnō'e & Mochi-age, Baikasai, and Plum Blossoms. I will keep my eye out for these!
