Solo Cultural Immersion in Kyoto
Day 4: Spirits and Serenity: A Day of Shrines in Kyoto
Journey through Kyoto's sacred spaces: Fushimi Inari's vibrant gates & Shimogamo Shrine's tranquil beauty on a soul-searching solo adventure.
Whispers of the Past, Echoes of the Future
Today was a day of deep immersion into the spiritual heart of Kyoto. From the fiery vermilion of countless torii gates to the hushed reverence of ancient forests, I traversed pathways worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims and seekers. It was a journey not just through space, but through time, connecting me to the enduring spirit of Japan.
My day began early, fueled by excitement and a strong cup of coffee from the Park Hotel Kyoto. I decided to start with Fushimi Inari Taisha, hoping to beat the crowds that I had read so much about. The train ride was smooth, and as I stepped out of the station, the iconic red gates were already visible, beckoning me forward.
Explore the enchanting Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto's iconic Shinto shrine famous for its thousands of vibrant torii gates and breathtaking mountain trails.
The sheer number of torii gates was breathtaking. Each one, donated by individuals and companies, snaked up the mountainside, creating a mesmerizing tunnel of vermilion. Sunlight filtered through the gaps, casting an ethereal glow on the path ahead. I began my ascent, joining a steady stream of fellow travelers, a mix of locals and tourists, all drawn to this sacred place. I was particularly struck by the number of people dressed in Kimono, taking photographs - the bright colours really popped against the red of the shrine. It was a beautiful sight to behold!
The higher I climbed, the fewer people I encountered. The air grew cooler, and the sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the distant calls of birds. Small shrines dotted the path, each guarded by stone foxes, the messengers of Inari, the god of rice and prosperity. I paused at each one, offering a small prayer for good fortune and safe travels. I even spotted a tiny torii gate at one of the smaller shrines with small ceramic foxes surrounding it. I found myself wondering about the stories and wishes attached to each gate, each fox, each offering.
Reaching the summit was a moment of quiet triumph. The view was panoramic, stretching out over the city of Kyoto and beyond. I sat for a while, catching my breath and soaking in the serenity of the surroundings. It was a far cry from the bustling streets below, a reminder of the peace that can be found even in the midst of a vibrant city.
Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us inward, revealing the quiet strength within.
The descent was quicker, and by the time I reached the bottom, I was ready for lunch. I decided to try Komefuku, a restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine, particularly its seafood and tempura. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for a tempura set, and it was absolutely delicious. The seafood was fresh and flavorful, and the tempura batter was light and crispy. It was the perfect way to refuel after my morning hike.

After lunch, I made my way to Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Kyoto's oldest Shinto shrines. In stark contrast to the vibrant energy of Fushimi Inari, Shimogamo exuded a sense of quiet reverence. As 2025 is the year of the Snake, I was interested to see that Shimogamo Shrine is a place to pay homage to the zodiac sign for the year!

The approach to the shrine led through Tadasu no Mori, an ancient forest that has remained untouched for centuries. Sunlight dappled through the trees, creating an enchanting atmosphere. It felt like stepping back in time, into a world where nature reigned supreme. I wandered along the path, listening to the gentle murmur of the river and the rustling of leaves. A welcome change from the city sounds I have become so accustomed to back in Berlin!
The shrine itself was a masterpiece of traditional architecture, with its elegant wooden structures and serene gardens. I learned that Shimogamo Shrine is dedicated to the gods Kamotaketsunomi and Tamayorihime, who are believed to protect Kyoto. I explored the grounds, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and the peaceful beauty of the gardens. I found myself drawn to the Kawai Shrine, dedicated to the mother of Emperor Jinmu, who is revered as the protector of women. I made a small offering, wishing for good health and happiness for Saoirse, back home.
As the afternoon wore on, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at the Kyoto Crafts Store. I had heard about the store's collection of traditional Japanese handicrafts and was eager to see it for myself. The store was a treasure trove of beautiful objects, from delicate ceramics to intricate textiles. I spent hours browsing the shelves, admiring the skill and artistry of the local craftsmen. I ended up buying a small silk scarf as a souvenir for myself, a reminder of my time in Kyoto.

For dinner, I chose Hanasaki, a Kaiseki restaurant located in a traditional Kyoto machiya (townhouse). The restaurant focused on fresh, seasonal Kyoto vegetables. Each dish was meticulously prepared, and I savored the exquisite cuisine in the tranquil atmosphere of a private dining room. The experience was luxurious and refined, a perfect ending to a day of spiritual exploration. I found the restaurant to be quite popular with tourists, and I was glad to have made a reservation in advance.

Alternatively, I could have chosen THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, an Italian restaurant set in a stunning location. It is actually the former residence of a famous Japanese painter, Takeuchi Seiho. However, I was in the mood for something more traditional today, so I opted for Hanasaki.

As I walked back to the Park Hotel Kyoto, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. I reflected on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in the beauty and spirituality of Kyoto. From the fiery gates of Fushimi Inari to the serene forests of Shimogamo, it had been a journey that touched my soul.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Nijo Castle and the Kyoto Imperial Palace, delving deeper into the history and culture of this fascinating city. I might even treat myself to a drink at The Common One Bar Kyoto in the evening - I've heard good things!
Today, however, I feel incredibly grateful. I am glad that I remembered to pack my travel guide, camera, comfortable walking shoes, lightweight rain jacket, reusable water bottle, and notebook and pen. However, I am still kicking myself for forgetting my travel adapter and sunscreen!
Goodnight from Kyoto! I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
