Day 8: A Day of History and Serenity in Kanazawa
Discover Kanazawa's historical charm with visits to Kanazawa Castle and Ishiura Shrine, followed by local culinary delights and cozy nightlife.
Kanazawa's Timeless Allure
Today was a delightful immersion into Kanazawa's rich history and serene beauty. From exploring majestic castles to experiencing tranquil shrines and indulging in local flavors, every moment was a treasure. It’s days like these that remind me why I love traveling and sharing these experiences with my family.
The day began with the promise of exploration, and Kanazawa certainly delivered. The weather was warm, with a chance of rain, so I was glad I had packed a light jacket. With Linnea excited and Maximilian ever the ready photographer, we set out to discover what Kanazawa had in store for us.
Our first stop was a delightful breakfast at Fuwari. We had heard great things about this place, and it was just a short walk from our hotel. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of local delicacies immediately made us feel at home. I decided to try their pear sorbet. Linnea, of course, opted for something sweet, while Maximilian enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set.

Every journey is a story waiting to be told, and today's chapter in Kanazawa was filled with history, flavor, and heartwarming moments.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we made our way to Kanazawa Castle. The castle grounds were expansive, and the architecture was simply breathtaking. Linnea was fascinated by the imposing gates and the vast courtyards. Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, shared stories of the Maeda clan and their significance in shaping Kanazawa's heritage.

We spent a considerable amount of time wandering through the castle park, admiring the intricate stone walls and the meticulously maintained gardens. The August heat was noticeable, but a gentle breeze made it bearable. We learned that Kanazawa Castle often has light-up events in the evening, which accentuates the shapes of the stone walls. Unfortunately, we were not able to stay, but perhaps we can visit another time.
Next on our itinerary was the Ishiura Shrine. This shrine is known as the oldest in Kanazawa. As we approached the shrine, we were greeted by a sense of tranquility. The air was filled with the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft murmur of prayers. Linnea was particularly taken with the cute mascots and charms available at the shrine. I found myself drawn to the peaceful ambiance, a perfect contrast to the grandeur of the castle.

After a morning of historical exploration and serene reflection, it was time for lunch. We headed to Grill Otsuka, a restaurant famous for its Hanton Rice. This local specialty is a rice omelet dish with fried shrimp and fish, topped with ketchup and tartar sauce. It was a unique and satisfying meal, offering a taste of Kanazawa's culinary heritage. Maximilian and I enjoyed the Hanton Rice, while Linnea opted for the hamburger steak. The restaurant had an old-school charm, with autographs from celebrities adorning the walls.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to indulge in some local nightlife. We visited Bar Spoon, a cozy establishment known for its innovative cocktails and curated wine selection. The bar had a jazzy and intimate atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing evening. Maximilian and I enjoyed expertly crafted cocktails, while Linnea sipped on a refreshing juice. The bartender was passionate about his craft, and we had a memorable night.

Before heading back to the hotel, we enjoyed dinner at Kaga, a restaurant that offers traditional Kaga cuisine. The restaurant is located on the 19th floor of the ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel, offering stunning views of the Kanazawa cityscape. The food was exquisite, featuring fresh seafood and local vegetables. The use of premium ingredients truly elevated the dining experience. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kanazawa's unique charm. The blend of historical landmarks, serene shrines, and local flavors has created lasting memories for my family. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Kazuemachi Chaya District and the Kanazawa City Ashigaru Museum. I am excited to continue our journey through this captivating city.
I am also realizing that I forgot to pack a travel adapter and rain ponchos. I will need to buy those items soon.
