Whispers of the Past

Today, Kanazawa felt like stepping into a living history book. Maximilian, Linnea, and I embarked on a journey through time, exploring the well-preserved streets and delving into the lives of those who once called this city home. It's amazing how much you can learn and appreciate when you slow down and truly immerse yourself in the surroundings.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Plat Home - Kanazawa Kitchen. It was a bit of a challenge to secure a reservation, but it was definitely worth the effort. The innovative cuisine, blending Japanese and Western flavors, was a fantastic way to start the day. I opted for the avocado tuna on seaweed, while Maximilian enjoyed the albacore tempura. Linnea, of course, was thrilled with her pastry. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a memorable experience, and we all left feeling energized for the day ahead.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Kazuemachi Chaya District. This area, one of Kanazawa's three preserved teahouse districts, is a true gem. As we strolled along the Asano River, the traditional wooden architecture transported us back to the Edo period. The narrow alleys, lined with latticework facades, exuded a nostalgic charm. It was easy to imagine geishas entertaining guests with music, dance, and conversation in the tea houses.

We wandered through the quaint Akari-zaka (Bright Alley) and Kuragari-zaka (Dark Alley), each offering a unique perspective of the district. The occasional sound of a shamisen drifted through the air, adding to the magical atmosphere. It’s these little moments that make traveling so special. Linnea was especially fascinated by the traditional buildings and kept asking questions about the people who used to live there. I tried my best to explain the history and significance of the district in a way that a six-year-old could understand.

After soaking in the ambiance of Kazuemachi, we made our way to Turban Curry Main Store for lunch. This restaurant is renowned for its rich and flavorful Japanese curry, a comforting and satisfying meal. Maximilian and I both ordered the L-set Curry, which included pork cutlet, hamburger steak, and sausage. Linnea opted for a smaller portion of the basic curry with a pork patty. The curry was served on a stainless steel plate and eaten with a spoon, a unique Kanazawa tradition. It was a hearty and delicious meal, perfect for refueling after our morning walk.

Next on our itinerary was the Kanazawa City Ashigaru Museum. This museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the ashigaru, the lower-ranked samurai foot soldiers during the Edo period. The museum features two well-preserved traditional houses, the Takanishi Family House and the Shimizu Family House, which were inhabited until the 1990s.

As we stepped inside the houses, we were transported back in time. The simple yet functional design of the homes provided insight into the daily lives of these soldiers and their families. We learned that, unlike ashigaru in other parts of Japan who lived in cramped row houses, those in the Kaga domain enjoyed detached homes with gardens. This reflected the domain's relative wealth and progressive policies.

The Shimizu Family House showcased a guest reception area and private family spaces. The Takanishi Family House provided additional information about ashigaru life and residences. It was eye-opening to see the contrast between the humble dwellings of the ashigaru and the more opulent residences of the higher-ranking samurai in the Nagamachi district. Linnea was particularly interested in the restored household items, trying to imagine what it would have been like to live in such a small house.

Before dinner, we took a detour to Kanazawa Loft. This general store is a treasure trove of cosmetics, home goods, and unique Japanese novelties. I was on the hunt for some high-quality Japanese cosmetics, while Maximilian wanted to find some stylish stationery. Linnea, of course, was drawn to the colorful toys and trinkets. We spent a pleasant hour browsing the aisles, picking up a few souvenirs and gifts for friends back home.

For dinner, we decided to try Nyumba, a modern izakaya that blends Western and Japanese dishes. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We ordered a variety of dishes, including fresh sashimi, grilled skewers, and some local craft beers. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxed evening meal. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring.

As we walked back to the Tmark City Hotel Kanazawa, I reflected on the day's experiences. Kanazawa had truly captivated us with its historical charm and cultural richness. Tomorrow, we’re venturing further afield to Shirakawa-go Gassho-Zukuri Minka-en and Yamanaka Onsen. I am excited to see the traditional farmhouses and relax in the hot springs. It promises to be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.

Until then, oyasumi nasai (good night) from Kanazawa!
