Exploring Kanazawa: A Family Adventure in Japan
Day 4: Stepping Back in Time: A Samurai Journey in Kanazawa
Explore the historic Nagamachi District and immerse yourself in samurai culture with family, creating unforgettable memories in Kanazawa.
Echoes of the Samurai
Today, Kanazawa whispered tales of bygone eras, and I found myself transported back to the age of the samurai. With Maximilian and Linnea by my side, I was eager to explore the Nagamachi District and delve into the heart of samurai history. The promise of preserved streets and ancient residences filled me with a sense of anticipation, a feeling akin to opening a treasured book filled with stories waiting to be discovered.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Café. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee were the perfect start. I opted for a classic latte, while Maximilian enjoyed a hearty breakfast sandwich. Linnea, of course, couldn't resist the offer of a pastry, which she devoured with gusto. It’s always a pleasure to find a café that caters to all of our tastes, and Curio Espresso certainly delivered. The café's unpretentious air, resembling a corner coffee shop in Seattle, was popular with locals and tourists alike. The owner, Sol, was super nice and spoke English. It felt like a little slice of Scandinavia, blended seamlessly with the warmth of Japan. Refueled and ready, we set off to explore the Nagamachi District.

As we stepped into Nagamachi, it felt as though we had walked onto a film set. The narrow, winding streets, lined with earthen walls topped with tiles, exuded an atmosphere of serene history. It was easy to imagine samurai warriors walking these very paths centuries ago. The komo, straw mats protecting the earthen walls for the winter, were not yet in place, but the lush greenery and meticulously maintained gardens hinted at the beauty this district holds year-round.
Our first stop was the Nomura-ke Samurai Residence. This beautifully restored home offered a glimpse into the life of a high-ranking samurai family. The residence belonged to the Nomura family, who served the ruling Maeda family from the 16th century until the end of the Edo period. As we walked through the rooms, I was struck by the elegance and simplicity of the design. The coffered ceilings made of Japanese cypress and the fusuma-e paintings on sliding doors were exquisite. Linnea was particularly fascinated by the samurai armor and swords on display, imagining herself as a brave warrior.

The true beauty of Kanazawa lies not just in its well-preserved history, but in the way it invites you to become a part of its story.
The garden at Nomura-ke was a highlight. Despite its small size, it was meticulously designed and incredibly peaceful. A 400-year-old bayberry tree stood proudly, overlooking a stream, a waterfall, and a granite bridge. The koi pond, filled with colorful fish, captivated Linnea's attention. Maximilian and I took a moment to sit on a bench, soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings. It was easy to see why this garden was listed as one of the top three in Japan by the *Journal of Japanese Gardening*.
Leaving Nomura-ke, we continued our exploration of Nagamachi, wandering through the maze of streets. We peeked into other preserved houses, each with its own unique charm. The Kanazawa Shinise Kinenkan, a restored pharmacy from the Edo period, offered a glimpse into the lives of the merchant class. Although we didn't go inside today, it's on my list for a future visit. I found myself contemplating the lives of the people who once lived here, their joys and sorrows, their daily routines, and their contributions to the rich tapestry of Kanazawa's history.
For lunch, we ventured to Itaru, a local restaurant known for its nodoguro meshi. This dish features grilled blackthroat seaperch served over rice, and it’s a Kanazawa specialty. The restaurant was cozy and bustling, filled with locals and tourists alike. We managed to get a table near the counter, where we could watch the chefs preparing the food. The nodoguro was delicious, the fish tender and flavorful, and the rice perfectly seasoned. Maximilian and I savored every bite, while Linnea happily munched on a simpler rice bowl. It was a truly authentic culinary experience.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the rest of the Nagamachi District, enjoying the atmosphere and taking photos of the picturesque streets. We stopped at a small tea shop, where we sampled local sweets and sipped on green tea. Linnea enjoyed a refreshing cup of ramune, a traditional Japanese soda.
As evening approached, we decided to try Spice Box for dinner, drawn in by the promise of authentic Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine. The restaurant was a welcome change from the traditional Japanese fare we had been enjoying, and the aromas of spices filled the air. We ordered a variety of dishes, including chicken korma, coconut prawn, and dal. The food was flavorful and satisfying, and the service was excellent. Linnea, who is usually a picky eater, surprised us by enjoying the chicken korma with naan bread. It was a delightful end to a day filled with cultural exploration and historical immersion.

To cap off the evening, Maximilian and I decided to sneak away for a quick drink at Kohaku Bar. This small, intimate bar near Kanazawa Station is known for its whiskey and custom cocktails. With only eight seats, it offered a cozy and exclusive atmosphere. The bartender was incredibly skilled, crafting personalized drinks based on our preferences. I enjoyed a Japanese whiskey, while Maximilian opted for a gin-based cocktail. The complimentary snack plate was a nice touch, and the overall experience was one of sophisticated relaxation. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day of sightseeing.

As I reflect on our day in Nagamachi, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a well-preserved piece of history. Kanazawa has a way of transporting you to another time, allowing you to connect with the past in a tangible way. The Nagamachi District is a testament to the city's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage, and I am grateful to have had the chance to explore it with my family.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Oyama Shrine and the iconic Kotoji Toro (Stone Lantern). I am excited to see more of Kanazawa's cultural treasures and to continue our journey through this captivating city. I'm especially looking forward to visiting the Ishikawa Local Products Center, perhaps I will find a memento that reminds me of this trip forever.
