Kyoto's Kitchen and Tracks of Time

Today was a delightful blend of culinary exploration and historical discovery here in Kyoto. I set out with my friends, ready to immerse ourselves in the city's vibrant market scene and delve into Japan's fascinating railway heritage. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the chance to experience new things, taste new flavors, and learn about the history that shapes a place.

Our day started bright and early at Nishiki Market, a place often called Kyoto's Kitchen. The market was already bustling with activity as we arrived, vendors setting up their stalls and locals doing their morning shopping. The energy was infectious, and I couldn't wait to dive in. I was especially excited, considering that back home in Heidelberg, Maximilian and I love visiting the local farmers' markets, and I was keen to see how this one compared.

We decided to have breakfast at Nishiri Restaurant, nestled within the market itself. It was a cozy little spot, and we managed to snag a table just as the morning rush began. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and a perfectly cooked rolled omelet. It was a delicious and satisfying start to the day, and fueled us up for the adventures ahead. I made a mental note to try recreating the omelet when I get back home; Linnea would absolutely love it!

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

After breakfast, we wandered through the market, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells. There were stalls selling everything from fresh seafood and local produce to pickles, sweets, and kitchenware. It was a feast for the senses, and I found myself wanting to try everything. We sampled some local delicacies, including pickled vegetables and grilled seafood skewers. I even mustered the courage to try a piece of *tako tamago* – a small octopus with a quail egg stuffed in its head! It was definitely an experience, and while I can't say it's my new favorite food, I'm glad I tried it.

After our culinary adventure at Nishiki Market, we decided to switch gears and head to the Kyoto Railway Museum. As a librarian at Heidelberg University, I have a deep appreciation for history and culture, and I was eager to learn about Japan's railway heritage. Plus, I knew my friends would enjoy it; they are all huge history buffs. The museum is located a short train ride from the market, and it was easy to get there using Kyoto's efficient public transportation system.

The Kyoto Railway Museum is a sprawling complex that showcases the history of railways in Japan, from the steam locomotives of the 19th century to the modern Shinkansen bullet trains. The museum has a vast collection of trains and railway artifacts, and I was impressed by the variety and scale of the exhibits. One of the highlights of the museum was the roundhouse, a historic structure that houses a collection of well-preserved steam locomotives. It was fascinating to see these magnificent machines up close and imagine what it must have been like to travel on them in the early days of rail travel. I could almost picture myself as a character in a classic novel, embarking on a grand adventure across the country.

We spent several hours exploring the museum, learning about the different types of trains, the history of railway engineering, and the impact of railways on Japanese society. There were interactive exhibits where we could try our hand at driving a train simulator or operating a model railway. It was a fun and educational experience, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the ingenuity and innovation that went into building Japan's railway system.

After the museum, it was time for lunch. We decided to try Antonio, a French restaurant not too far from the museum. It was a charming little place, and the food was delicious. I ordered a classic French dish, and it was cooked to perfection. It was a nice change of pace after all the Japanese food we'd been eating, and it reminded me of the culinary delights of Heidelberg.

In the late afternoon, we popped into Harajuku Chicago Kyoto Store. It was filled with racks of vintage clothing and accessories, and I could have spent hours browsing through the unique finds. I ended up buying a beautiful silk scarf with a traditional Japanese design – a perfect souvenir to remind me of my time in Kyoto. I also thought it would be wonderful to find a vintage Kimono, but decided against it, remembering Maximilian's comment that I already have 'enough' vintage clothes.

For dinner, we had reservations at Chihana, a Michelin-starred *kaiseki* restaurant. *Kaiseki* is a traditional Japanese multi-course meal, and it's known for its exquisite presentation and seasonal ingredients. Chihana was a truly special experience. Each course was a work of art, and the flavors were delicate and refined. The chef used only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients, and the attention to detail was remarkable. It was a culinary journey that I'll never forget.

As the day drew to a close, we strolled back to our ryokan, feeling content and fulfilled. We had experienced so much in just one day – the vibrant energy of Nishiki Market, the fascinating history of the Kyoto Railway Museum, the charm of Harajuku Chicago Kyoto Store, and the exquisite cuisine of Chihana. It was a day that perfectly captured the essence of Kyoto, a city that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, culture and cuisine. I am also very glad that the rain held off, allowing us to explore the city without getting drenched!

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street and the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple. I'm excited to see more of Kyoto's hidden gems and discover new aspects of this fascinating city. And perhaps, after a day of exploring, we'll unwind with a drink at Bar Fishbowl. Until then, *oyasumi nasai* (good night) from Kyoto!

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I’m reminded of something my grandmother used to say: The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask. And isn't that the truth? It’s in these unexpected moments, these unplanned discoveries, that the real magic of travel lies. It's about opening yourself up to new experiences, embracing the unknown, and letting the journey unfold in its own unique way. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

I'm so grateful for these experiences, and I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you all. Stay tuned for more updates from Kyoto!
