A Journey Through Time and Stone

Today was a day of venturing off the beaten path, a delightful escape into the quieter corners of Kyoto. Maximilian always says I have a knack for finding the most charming and unusual spots, and today, I think I truly outdid myself. With my friends, I set out to explore Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street and the enchanting Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, two destinations that whispered stories of old Japan.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Komefuku. The promise of fresh seafood and exquisite tempura was too enticing to resist. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a taste of authentic Japanese cuisine. I opted for a tempura set, while some of my friends chose the sashimi. Each bite was a burst of flavor, a perfect start to our day of exploration. It’s these simple moments, sharing a meal and planning our adventures, that I cherish most when traveling with friends.

Fueled and ready, we made our way to Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street. Stepping onto this street felt like stepping back in time. The beautifully preserved wooden machiya townhouses lined the lane, now housing quaint cafes, shops, and teahouses. It was easy to imagine what life might have been like here during the Edo period. The cherry blossoms were still clinging to the branches, adding a touch of magic to the already picturesque setting. We strolled leisurely, peeking into shops selling traditional crafts and sampling local sweets. The air was filled with a sense of tranquility, a welcome contrast to the busier areas of Kyoto.

I couldn't help but think of Linnea as we walked along Saga Toriimoto. She would have loved the colorful crafts and the sweet treats. I made a mental note to find a similar street when we return to Heidelberg, perhaps in one of the nearby towns. It's important to me that Linnea experiences the same sense of wonder and discovery that I feel when exploring new places.

As we reached the end of Saga Toriimoto, we continued our journey towards Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple. The walk itself was an adventure, taking us through winding paths and past traditional thatched-roof buildings. This area is known for Kaiseki Kyoto-cuisine, but we decided to save that experience for another time, perhaps on a solo trip with Maximilian.

Finally, we arrived at Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, and it was unlike anything I had ever seen. Hidden away in the hills of Arashiyama, this temple is home to over 1,200 stone statues, each with its own unique personality and charm. These statues, known as rakan, represent the disciples of the historical Buddha, and they were carved by ordinary people as part of a restoration project in the 1980s. The result is a whimsical and heartwarming collection of art that feels both spiritual and deeply human.

We spent hours wandering among the statues, marveling at the creativity and individuality of each one. Some were serious, some were playful, and some were downright bizarre. It was impossible not to smile as we discovered new details and imagined the stories behind each carving. The temple's atmosphere was serene and peaceful, a perfect place to reflect and appreciate the beauty of imperfection.

One of my friends, Elsa, is an art historian, and she was particularly fascinated by the temple's history and the stories behind the statues. She explained how the temple was originally founded in the 8th century but had been relocated and rebuilt several times due to floods and typhoons. It was this history of resilience and community that made the temple so special.

After our visit to Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, we were ready for a late lunch. We found a charming little restaurant called Nishikawa, nestled near Yasaka Shrine. The restaurant exuded Kyoto sophistication, from the Hinoki cypress counter to the wicker ceiling. The chef embodies the service spirit, and we were impressed by the team of chefs busy behind the counter. We enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Kyoto cuisine, savoring each bite and reflecting on our day's adventures. It was the perfect way to recharge before our evening plans.

As evening approached, we decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife. We headed to Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha for dinner. This restaurant is known for its Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savory pancake layered with noodles, cabbage, and various toppings. I had heard that they also offer vegetarian and vegan options, which was perfect for our group, as one of our friends is vegan. I was excited to try this local favorite and experience the lively atmosphere of the restaurant.

The restaurant was small and intimate, with only a few seats around the counter. We watched as the chef skillfully prepared our okonomiyaki, layering the ingredients with precision and care. The aroma was intoxicating, and we couldn't wait to dig in. The okonomiyaki was delicious, a perfect blend of savory and sweet, with a satisfyingly crispy texture. We savored each bite, sharing stories and laughter as we enjoyed our meal. I made a mental note to try and recreate this dish when I returned to Heidelberg, perhaps with Maximilian's help.

After dinner, we decided to check out Bar Fishbowl, a cozy spot in Kiyamachi Dori. The owner, an American expatriate, was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the bar had a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. I ordered a Japanese whiskey, while my friends opted for cocktails. We chatted with the owner, sharing stories of our travels and learning about his life in Kyoto. It was a fun and memorable end to our day.

As I reflect on today, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Kyoto with my friends. From the serene streets of Saga Toriimoto to the whimsical statues of Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, every moment was a reminder of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the small things, and connecting with the people around me. It's days like these that make travel so rewarding, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring. Tomorrow we are planning to visit Kyoto Samurai Experience and Rengeo-in (Sanjusangen-do) Temple. I am particularly excited about the Samurai experience!

I am also reminded that I forgot to pack an umbrella and a portable phone charger. I will need to buy these tomorrow!
