Day 14: Kyoto's Farewell Embrace: Reflecting on a Journey Through Time
Join me on the final day of my Kyoto adventure as I explore temples, towers, and savor the tastes of this enchanting city.
A Fond Farewell to Kyoto
Today marks the end of our two-week adventure in Kyoto, and it’s a bittersweet moment. This city has woven its way into my heart with its serene temples, bustling markets, and the gentle grace of its people. As I reflect on the past fourteen days, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences shared and the memories created with my friends. Today, we soaked up every last drop of Kyoto's magic, knowing that each moment would soon be a cherished memory.
Our final day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Ajikyu. It was a quaint little place, tucked away, feeling more like someone’s home than a restaurant. It was exactly the kind of authentic experience I was hoping for. The menu was fish-heavy, but it showcased the chef's versatility with vegetables. The sashimi was incredibly fresh, and the grilled yellowtail was a revelation – a testament to simple ingredients prepared with expertise. Maximilian, who usually prefers a heartier German breakfast, was surprisingly taken with the delicate flavors. He even admitted he might try to recreate the miso soup at home, a challenge I'm eager to see him attempt!

The end of a journey is not the end of the story, but rather the beginning of its retelling.
After breakfast, we decided to embrace the modern side of Kyoto with a visit to Kyoto Tower. Standing tall near the Kyoto Station, the Kyoto Tower offered a panoramic view of the city. From the observation deck, 100 meters high, the sprawling cityscape unfolded beneath us. We spotted many of the temples we had visited over the past two weeks, nestled amongst the urban landscape. It was fascinating to see how the old and the new coexisted in Kyoto. Linnea was particularly excited, pointing out tiny cars and people below, imagining them as little ants scurrying about their day. I found myself reflecting on how much we had seen and done, feeling a sense of accomplishment and a tinge of sadness that our time here was drawing to a close.

Next on our itinerary was the Shoren-in Temple, also known as Awata Palace. This serene temple offered a tranquil escape from the city bustle. Giant camphor trees stood guard outside its walls, creating an atmosphere of ancient reverence. Shoren-in Temple is one of the five Monzeki Temples in Kyoto where members of the Imperial family traditionally served as head priests. Inside, we wandered through the main buildings connected by wooden walkways, admiring the traditional architecture and the meticulously maintained gardens. The Ryujin-no-ike Pond was especially enchanting, its tranquil waters reflecting the surrounding greenery. Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, was captivated by the temple's history, particularly its connection to the Tendai sect of Buddhism.

For lunch, we indulged in a Teppanyaki experience at Teppanyaki Minami. The restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere with a stage-like open kitchen, where skilled chefs cooked right before our eyes. The concept of Farm to Table was evident in the fresh, seasonal vegetables and high-quality meats. We savored every bite, from the perfectly grilled prawns to the melt-in-your-mouth Kagoshima Black beef. Linnea was mesmerized by the chef's skillful knife work, giggling as he flipped and tossed ingredients with flair. It was a delightful and memorable meal, a perfect way to celebrate our last day in Kyoto.

As evening approached, we ventured into the Pontocho alley for a final taste of Kyoto nightlife at Bar Rinto. This hidden gem, inspired by traditional Japanese tea rooms, offered a serene and elegant atmosphere. We descended the narrow stairway and were greeted by a dashing young bartender, who crafted exquisite cocktails with fresh, seasonal fruits. Sipping our drinks, we enjoyed the view of the Kamo River, its gentle flow reflecting the city lights. The bar's ambiance was intimate and refined, a perfect setting for reminiscing about our adventures in Kyoto. I savored a cocktail, a concoction of local fruits and fragrant liqueur, feeling the gentle buzz of contentment wash over me. It was the perfect way to toast to our incredible journey.

Our final dinner was at Oryori Menami, a Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognized restaurant known for its Obanzai cuisine. This traditional style of home-cooked cuisine from Kyoto was a delightful culinary experience. The restaurant, run by the third-generation owner, showcased a deep appreciation for fine pottery, with daily specials presented in decorative bowls. We ordered the Obanzai Assortment, a beautifully presented selection of Kyoto flavors, featuring pickled, boiled, and marinated dishes served on one plate. The restaurant's commitment to using premium quality Kyoyasai (Kyoto heirloom vegetables) and luxury ingredients like amadai (tilefish) was evident in every bite. It was a comforting and authentic meal, a true taste of Kyoto's culinary heritage. Linnea, who can be a picky eater, surprised us by devouring the fried yuba spring rolls, declaring them her favorite food in Japan.

As I sit here now, writing this final entry, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness. Kyoto has been more than just a destination; it has been an experience that has enriched my soul. From the vibrant cherry blossoms to the tranquil temples, from the bustling markets to the serene gardens, Kyoto has offered us a glimpse into a world of beauty, history, and culture. I am grateful for the memories we have made, the friendships we have strengthened, and the lessons we have learned.
I know that a part of me will always remain in Kyoto, and I hope to return someday to rediscover its magic. Until then, I will carry the spirit of this enchanting city with me, wherever my travels may lead. It's time to pack our bags and prepare for our journey back home to Heidelberg. I'm looking forward to seeing Linnea back in her familiar surroundings, but I know we'll both carry a piece of Kyoto in our hearts.
Thank you, Kyoto, for an unforgettable adventure. Sayōnara, for now.
I hope you’ve enjoyed following along on our journey. Stay tuned for more travel adventures!
