Day 13: Honing My Inner Warrior and Finding Peace in Kyoto

Today was a whirlwind of experiences that truly encapsulated the spirit of Kyoto. From wielding a samurai sword to finding serenity in an ancient temple and exploring the bustling shopping streets, it was a day of contrasts and cultural immersion that I will cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hanasaki. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of small, flavorful dishes. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures.

Embracing the Way of the Samurai

After breakfast, I headed to the Kyoto Samurai Experience. As someone who grew up reading about brave knights and watching historical dramas, the chance to step into the world of the samurai was too good to pass up. I must admit, I felt a bit like a character in one of Linnea's video games as I donned the traditional samurai attire. It was heavier than I expected, but the weight added to the sense of authenticity. Maximilian chuckled, snapping a few photos before we began.

The instructors were incredibly knowledgeable and patient, guiding us through the history and philosophy of Bushido, the way of the samurai. We learned about the importance of honor, discipline, and respect, values that resonated deeply with me. Then came the exciting part: sword training. Starting with a wooden sword, we practiced basic stances and movements, slowly building our confidence. Finally, we were given real katanas – carefully, of course! The weight and sharpness of the blade were intimidating, but also exhilarating. I focused on each movement, channeling my inner warrior as I swung the katana, slicing through the air. It was an incredible feeling of power and control.

It's not just about wielding a sword; it's about mastering your mind and spirit.

The highlight of the experience was the chance to cut through a tatami mat. It took a few tries, but with the instructor's guidance, I finally managed to slice it cleanly in two. The sense of accomplishment was immense. As Astrid, the librarian from Heidelberg, found herself connecting with the discipline and focus of the samurai, I realized that this experience was more than just a tourist activity; it was a lesson in mindfulness and self-mastery. I even picked up a few samurai moves to show Linnea when I get back home!

Finding Serenity at Sanjusangen-do Temple

After the adrenaline rush of the samurai experience, I sought a moment of tranquility at Rengeo-in (Sanjusangen-do) Temple. This temple is famous for its stunning collection of 1,001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. As I stepped inside the long, wooden hall, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the display. Rows upon rows of golden statues stretched out before me, each with a unique expression and posture. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight.

I spent a long time wandering through the hall, admiring the intricate details of each statue. The craftsmanship was exquisite, and the atmosphere was one of profound peace and serenity. I found myself reflecting on the importance of compassion and empathy, qualities that are so essential in our world today. The temple's history is also fascinating. Founded in 1164, it has survived fires and reconstructions, standing as a testament to the enduring power of faith and art. The main hall, rebuilt in 1266, is a National Treasure of Japan and the longest wooden structure in the country. Just imagine the stories these walls could tell!

A Culinary Interlude

Lunch at Masayoshi Japanese Dining was a delightful experience. I opted for a steak lunch set. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by the variety of sauces offered. It was a satisfying and delicious meal that provided a welcome break from our sightseeing.

Exploring Shinkyogoku Shopping Street

With renewed energy, I ventured into the Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This bustling arcade is a sensory overload in the best possible way. Lined with shops selling everything from traditional crafts to trendy fashion and quirky souvenirs, it's a shopper's paradise. I loved browsing the colorful displays, sampling local snacks, and soaking up the lively atmosphere. It was a great place to find unique gifts for friends and family back home. I picked up a few small trinkets for Linnea, knowing she would appreciate the kawaii (cute) designs.

The Shinkyogoku Shopping Street has a rich history, dating back to the 16th century when Toyotomi Hideyoshi moved many of Kyoto's temples to the area. Over time, the temple grounds evolved into a bustling commercial district, attracting locals and visitors alike. Today, it's one of the busiest shopping streets in Kyoto, offering a mix of traditional and modern goods.

A Gion Dinner

As evening approached, I made my way to Gion for dinner at Gion Nanba. Tucked away in a quiet alley near Yasaka Shrine, this Michelin-starred restaurant offers an exquisite kaiseki experience. The atmosphere was intimate and refined, with only a handful of seats at the counter and a few private dining rooms. I felt a bit like Alice stepping into a hidden wonderland as I navigated the narrow alleyway to find it. The chef, with over 20 years of experience, meticulously prepared each dish, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients. The presentation was stunning, and the flavors were delicate and complex. It was a true culinary journey that delighted all my senses. It is hard to believe that this gem was awarded a Michelin star! The service was impeccable. The staff explained each dish in detail, making me feel welcome and comfortable. The restaurant's commitment to quality and tradition was evident in every aspect of the dining experience.

The highlight of the meal was the scallop, sea urchin, bamboo sprout, and broccoli rabe dish. The combination of flavors and textures was sublime, a perfect representation of Kyoto's culinary artistry. The chef's dedication to sourcing the finest ingredients and his passion for creating a memorable dining experience truly shone through.

As I savored the last bite of dessert, I reflected on the incredible day I had experienced. From the adrenaline rush of wielding a samurai sword to the serenity of Sanjusangen-do Temple and the vibrant energy of Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, it was a day that truly captured the essence of Kyoto. I am so grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city and immerse myself in its rich culture.

Tomorrow, on our last day, we plan to visit Kyoto Tower and Shoren-in Temple. I am looking forward to seeing Kyoto from above and exploring another beautiful temple before we head back to Heidelberg. It's hard to believe our trip is almost over! But I know that the memories and experiences we've shared will stay with us for a lifetime.

What a journey! I’m off to bed now, dreaming of samurai swords and golden Buddhas. Until tomorrow!
