Exploring the Mystical Forests of Yakushima
Day 7: Farewell to Yakushima: A Final Day of Discovery
Reflecting on my Yakushima adventure, from scaling Mt. Miyanoura to savoring local flavors and embracing the island's unique culture.
Summiting and Souvenirs: A Farewell to Yakushima
As my final day on Yakushima drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a bittersweet mix of accomplishment and melancholy. This island, with its ancient forests and captivating landscapes, had woven its way into my heart. Today was all about embracing the last moments, soaking in the final experiences, and preparing for the journey back to Banff.
The day began early, with a quick breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's funny, airports aren't usually places I associate with culinary delight, but even here, there was a unique charm. I grabbed a simple set meal, enjoying the quiet hum of the airport as travelers began to arrive. It was a moment to reflect on the incredible week I’d had, a week filled with hiking, exploration, and a deep connection with nature. I even tried the Yakushima Soba, a local recommendation, and it was surprisingly delicious. The broth had a delicate flavor, and the fried flying fish was a unique touch that I wouldn't have found anywhere else. It was a hearty meal that fueled me up for the day's adventures.

My main objective for the day was Mt. Miyanoura, the highest peak in Kyushu. I knew it would be a challenging hike, but I was determined to reach the summit and take in the panoramic views. The Yodogawa trail is known as the most popular route, and the only one that allows for a same-day round trip to the peak. The trail was a mix of mossy forests, rocky paths, and steep inclines. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the occasional birdsong. I pushed myself onward, driven by the promise of breathtaking vistas. The climb was strenuous, but every step was worth it. The views were simply stunning, a tapestry of green forests, rugged mountains, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

The beauty of a place is not just in what you see, but in how it makes you feel.
After descending from Mt. Miyanoura, I was ready for a change of pace. I decided to visit the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. It was the perfect place to delve deeper into the island's unique ecosystem and learn about its rich history. The center is designed to showcase Yakushima’s natural environment and the islanders’ lifestyles. It has exhibits about the island's natural environment and history. The exhibits were thoughtfully curated, with models, samples, and videos that explained the island's diverse flora and fauna. I was particularly fascinated by the displays on the island's water systems, learning about the heavy rainfall and its impact on the landscape. The exhibits also covered the history of the island, from the Jomon period to the present day. I was impressed by the center's commitment to preserving the island's natural and cultural heritage. I even caught a showing of “Yakushima, Symphony of Forest and Water” on the ultra-wide screen, which was a great way to immerse myself in the island’s beauty.

For lunch, I treated myself to a meal at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant had come highly recommended, and I was eager to try some of the local specialties. The restaurant has a chic atmosphere and a bilingual menu. I decided to try the flying fish ramen, which was a delicious and unique dish. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the flying fish was perfectly cooked. I also sampled the *kame no te*, or turtle legs, which were surprisingly tasty. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. It was a satisfying and memorable meal.

As the day wore on, I felt a pang of sadness knowing that my time on Yakushima was coming to an end. I wanted to soak in every last moment, to capture the essence of this magical island in my memory. Before heading to the airport, I stopped by Fisherman's Bar NINA, a local spot known for its fresh seafood and lively atmosphere. I'm not usually one for seafood, but I'd heard good things about this place, and I wanted to experience the local culture. The bar was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the evening air and sharing stories. I ordered a local beer and struck up a conversation with a friendly fisherman who told me about his life on the island. It was a wonderful way to end the day, surrounded by the warmth and hospitality of the Yakushima people.

Before heading to the airport for my evening flight, I decided to treat myself to an Indian dinner at Subarashi Indian Restaurant. I know it sounds strange to have Indian food in Japan, but I had read rave reviews about this place and decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was delicious and well-priced. I ordered a vegetarian curry, specifying no dairy to make it vegan, and it was flavorful and satisfying. It was a comforting meal that warmed me from the inside out.

As I sat at the Yakushima Airport, waiting for my flight to Kagoshima, I couldn't help but reflect on my incredible journey. This solo adventure had been everything I had hoped for and more. I had immersed myself in the island's natural beauty, challenged myself physically, and connected with the local culture. I'd hiked through ancient forests, scaled majestic mountains, and savored delicious local cuisine. I'd learned about the island's history, its ecosystem, and its people. And most importantly, I'd discovered a deeper connection with myself.
Yakushima had taught me the importance of slowing down, of appreciating the simple things in life, and of embracing the unknown. It had reminded me that nature is a powerful force, capable of both inspiring and humbling us. And it had shown me that even in the most remote corners of the world, there are people who are kind, generous, and welcoming.
As the plane took off, I gazed out the window at the twinkling lights of Yakushima below. I knew that I would never forget this magical island, and I hoped that one day, I would return to explore its hidden depths once more. For now, though, it was time to head back to Banff, back to Liam, and back to my life as a wildlife photographer. But I knew that a piece of Yakushima would always stay with me, a reminder of the power of nature and the beauty of human connection.
I am looking forward to sharing my adventure with Liam and plan to start knitting a traditional Norwegian pattern that is inspired by the colors of Yakushima.
For anyone considering a trip to Yakushima, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It's a destination that will challenge you, inspire you, and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. Just remember to pack your hiking boots, your rain jacket, and your sense of adventure. And don't forget to leave some space in your suitcase for souvenirs – you'll want to take a piece of Yakushima home with you.
Until next time, happy travels!
