Beacon of Light and Roaring Falls

Today was a day of contrasts, from the quiet contemplation at a coastal lighthouse to the invigorating spray of a powerful waterfall. It's days like these that remind me why I fell in love with travel – the unexpected beauty and the simple joys of discovery. Yakushima continues to surprise and enchant me at every turn.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Michikusa. It was a cozy little spot, the kind where the locals gather, and the food was simple, home-style cooking. I had a set meal with grilled fish, miso soup, and some local vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. I made a mental note to try and recreate the miso soup when I got back home to Banff; Liam would love it.

First on the agenda was the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive there was beautiful, winding along the coast with glimpses of the turquoise sea. The road was narrow in places, but that only added to the sense of adventure. When I arrived, the lighthouse stood tall and white against the clear blue sky. It wasn't particularly large or grand, but it had a certain charm. I climbed up to the top and took in the panoramic views of the coastline. The sea stretched out before me, endless and inviting.

The lighthouse was peaceful, offering a moment of quiet reflection. I thought about Liam back in Banff, probably getting ready for another busy day at the brewery. I missed him, but I also felt grateful for this time alone, to explore and discover at my own pace. The wind was strong up at the top of the lighthouse, whipping my hair around my face, but I didn't mind. It felt invigorating, like a breath of fresh air.

The beauty of Yakushima lies not just in its majestic forests, but also in the simple, serene moments found along its rugged coastline.

After the lighthouse, it was time for something a little more dramatic: Ohko Waterfall. I drove inland, following the signs, and soon I could hear the roar of the water. The parking area was just a short walk from the falls, and as I approached, I could feel the spray on my face. The waterfall was magnificent, cascading down the mountainside in a powerful torrent. It’s considered one of Japan's best 100 waterfalls, and I could certainly see why. The sheer force and beauty of it were breathtaking.

I spent some time just watching the water, mesmerized by its power. The sun was shining, and a rainbow arced across the pool at the base of the falls. It was a perfect moment, a reminder of the beauty and power of nature. I took some photos, trying to capture the scene, but I knew that no picture could truly do it justice. It was something you had to experience in person.

For lunch, I stopped at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. The name itself was intriguing, and the food didn't disappoint. It was a small, family-run restaurant, and the menu featured local specialties. I tried a dish with flying fish, which was a local delicacy. It was delicious, with a delicate, slightly sweet flavor. The owner was friendly and welcoming, and we chatted for a while about Yakushima and its unique culture.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Wood Shop Kikori. I'd heard about this place from some other travelers, and I was curious to see what it was all about. The shop was located just south of Anbo, and it was filled with beautiful wooden crafts, all made from local Yakusugi cedar. The owner, Yuji Kashima, is a former forester who now uses his skills to create these stunning pieces. I learned that the felling of Yakusugi is strictly prohibited, but the shop uses domaiboku, the fallen trees and stumps, which can still be harvested.

I spent quite a while browsing the shop, admiring the craftsmanship. There were bowls, vases, sculptures, and all sorts of other objects, each one unique and beautiful. I ended up buying a small wooden bowl, which I thought would be perfect for holding berries when Liam and I go hiking back in Banff. It would be a little piece of Yakushima to bring back home with me.

As evening approached, I made my way to SamPotei for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended to me by several locals, and I was eager to try it. It was located on the riverside in Anbo, and the setting was lovely. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated, with wooden furniture and a cozy atmosphere. I had a reservation, which was a good thing because the place was packed.

I ordered a selection of local dishes, including sashimi, grilled fish, and some vegetable tempura. Everything was delicious, fresh and flavorful. The sashimi was particularly good, and the staff explained the different types of fish with picture cards. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was lively and fun. I struck up a conversation with a couple from Tokyo who were also visiting Yakushima, and we shared stories and travel tips.

After dinner, I took a leisurely stroll along the riverbank, enjoying the cool evening air. The stars were out, and the sound of the river was soothing. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. As I walked back to my guesthouse, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude. Yakushima had exceeded all my expectations, and I was already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to tackle Mt. Miyanoura, the highest peak on the island. It's supposed to be a challenging hike, but I'm excited to see the views from the top. I'm also hoping to visit the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center to learn more about the island's unique ecosystem. And, of course, I'll be sure to find a good spot for lunch and dinner. I hear the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant and Subarashi Indian Restaurant are both worth a visit.

As I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. Yakushima has captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what other wonders it has in store. This solo journey has been exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, to challenge myself, and to discover the beauty of the world around me. I know Liam would love it here, and I can't wait to share my stories with him when I get back home.

And before I forget, I really need to find some insect repellent tomorrow! Those little critters are relentless!
