A Day of Coastal Charms

Today, Ishigaki Island unveiled another layer of its captivating beauty. From serene bays to windswept cliffs, the island’s diverse landscapes whispered stories of nature's artistry, inviting us to pause and appreciate the simple elegance of our surroundings. It was a day of exploration, delicious food, and quiet moments of reflection, shared with my favourite travel companion, Liam.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Re:hellow Beach. I opted for a vibrant island vegetable dish, while Liam, ever the adventurous one, chose a local twist on the classic taco rice. The cafe's laid-back atmosphere and the gentle sea breeze made it the perfect spot to start our day. I always appreciate a good cup of coffee, and theirs was exceptional, providing the perfect jolt of energy for the day's adventures.

With our appetites sated, we set off for Kabira Bay. The drive itself was a treat, with lush greenery on either side of the road, hinting at the natural wonders that awaited us. As we approached the bay, the vibrant turquoise waters shimmering under the morning sun immediately captured our attention. It’s easy to see why Kabira Bay is considered one of Japan's most beautiful landscapes.

Swimming is prohibited to protect the black pearl cultivation, but that didn't dampen our spirits. Instead, we opted for a glass-bottom boat tour. As the boat glided over the crystal-clear waters, we were treated to a mesmerizing underwater spectacle. Colorful coral reefs, teeming with life, stretched out beneath us, creating an otherworldly landscape. We spotted clownfish darting in and out of anemones, giant clams nestled in the sand, and a sea turtle gracefully gliding through the water. It was like watching a vibrant underwater ballet, a testament to the rich biodiversity of Ishigaki's waters.

The beauty of nature lies not just in what we see, but in what it awakens within us.

After our aquatic adventure, we took a moment to explore the area around Kabira Bay. We strolled along the white sand beach, feeling the soft grains between our toes, and visited the Kabira Kannon Temple, perched atop a nearby hill. The temple, with its peaceful ambiance and panoramic views, offered a moment of quiet contemplation. Legend has it that the temple was built by a grateful boy who was saved from being stranded at sea.

For lunch, we headed to SALTIDA, a bistro located within the ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort. The restaurant boasts a spacious dining room with stunning views of the Ishigaki coastline. We indulged in a delightful meal featuring fresh, local ingredients. Liam chose a perfectly cooked steak, while I savored a seafood dish that highlighted the ocean's bounty. The restaurant's commitment to showcasing the island's culinary treasures was evident in every bite.

In the late afternoon, we drove to Oganzaki Lighthouse. As we approached the westernmost cape of Ishigaki Island, the landscape transformed into rugged cliffs battered by the crashing waves. The white lighthouse stood tall against the azure sky, a beacon of hope and guidance.

We explored the area around the lighthouse, taking in the dramatic scenery. The northern side of the cape was particularly striking, with jagged rock formations and the legendary Fuchibui Rock, precariously balanced atop an offshore reef. The wind howled around us, carrying the scent of the sea and the distant cries of seabirds. I could easily imagine why this place was once considered sacred, a place where gods descended.

As the sun began its descent, we found a spot to watch the spectacle unfold. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant hues, with shades of orange, pink, and purple painting the horizon. The sun dipped slowly into the ocean, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was a moment of pure magic, a reminder of the simple joys in life. We watched in silence, hand in hand, as the day drew to a close.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we decided to experience Ishigaki's nightlife at Island Bar CANOPUS. The bar's tropical decor and laid-back vibes were the perfect antidote to a day of exploration. We enjoyed refreshing cocktails and listened to the soothing sounds of island music. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As we sipped our drinks, we chatted about our plans for tomorrow. We're planning to visit the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory, hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars, and then spend some time relaxing on Shiraho Beach. I'm particularly excited about visiting Mirumiru Honpo Main Store; I’ve heard they have some delicious local treats.

I'm also making a note to pack insect repellent and a portable phone charger. I completely forgot them! It's always something, isn't it?

Our final stop for the day was at Hitoshi Ishiganto, a renowned restaurant known for its seafood, sushi, and dumplings. Luckily, we had made reservations in advance, as the restaurant is incredibly popular. We savored a variety of dishes, including their famous tuna sushi and sea urchin cream. The quality of the food was exceptional, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end our day of coastal exploration.

Back at our guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Ishigaki Island is a place of incredible beauty, a place where nature's wonders are on full display. And sharing these moments with Liam makes it all the more special. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow will bring.

“The best view comes after the hardest climb.” I feel like today was a rewarding climb filled with beauty and discovery.
