Celestial Gazing and Underwater Wonders

Today was a day of exploring the vastness of space and the intricate beauty of the underwater world. Liam and I set out to experience the unique blend of nature and science that Ishigaki Island offers. From stargazing at the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory to snorkeling in the vibrant coral reefs of Shiraho Beach, it was a day filled with awe and wonder.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Pulau Sri Lanka. This charming restaurant, adorned with beautiful Sri Lankan decorations, offered a delightful start to our adventures. I opted for the veg/dhal set, while Liam enjoyed the spicy chicken curry. The owner was so kind, explaining the ingredients and inspiration behind each dish. It felt like a warm welcome to the day ahead.

After breakfast, we drove to the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory, perched atop Mt. Maesedake. The drive up the narrow, winding mountain road was an adventure in itself! Although the main tour and video presentations were in Japanese, the views from the observatory were simply breathtaking. The Murikabushi Telescope, the largest optical and infrared reflector telescope in the Kyushu-Okinawa area, was truly impressive. I could only imagine the incredible sights it has captured. It's amazing to think that this observatory, operated in cooperation with various organizations, contributes to research on solar system objects and transient astronomical events.

To see the Earth as it truly is, small and blue and beautiful in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see ourselves as riders on the Earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the eternal cold – Archibald MacLeish

Even though we couldn't fully understand the Japanese presentations, being there, surrounded by the tools of astronomical discovery, sparked a sense of connection to the cosmos. I was reminded of nights back in Banff, gazing up at the stars, feeling a similar sense of wonder. I made a mental note to look into the stargazing parties they hold; I am sure they would be amazing. Apparently, more stars are visible from Ishigaki Island than anywhere else in Japan, which is quite a claim. I learned that an asteroid was even named after Ishigaki Island, which is such a cool fact !

After our celestial visit, we headed to Shiraho Beach, a short drive from the airport. This beach is renowned for its blue coral colonies, the largest in the Northern Hemisphere. As we approached, the crystal-clear water shimmered under the October sun. The beach itself is a pristine stretch of white sand, untouched by artificial structures.

We joined a snorkeling tour to explore the coral reefs. Slipping into the water, I was immediately greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors. The coral reefs were teeming with life – vibrant tropical fish darting among the coral formations. It was like swimming in a living painting. I spotted various types of coral, including table coral and brain coral. While the blue coral wasn't exactly blue (more of a beige or light brown), its unique shape and the sheer size of the colony were awe-inspiring.

Liam was in his element, pointing out different species of fish and marveling at the intricate ecosystem. He even managed to capture some amazing underwater shots with his GoPro. I felt a surge of gratitude for this experience – witnessing such natural beauty with my husband by my side. It reminded me of our diving adventures in other parts of the world, but there was something particularly special about this unique coral reef. The locals are very aware of the environmental impact of tourism and promote guided tours to ensure the coral reefs are protected.

After our snorkeling adventure, we were both famished. We decided to have lunch at ocean good table 石垣, a restaurant known for its beautiful ocean views and BBQ. The restaurant is located in a beautiful spot, and they focus on using fresh, local ingredients. Liam and I shared a delightful lunch, savoring the flavors of Ishigaki beef and local seafood.

In the afternoon, we stopped by Mirumiru Honpo Main Store. This gelato shop is famous for its gelato made with fresh milk from its own farm. With the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, we savored our gelatos while enjoying the panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding greenery. I chose the purple yam and brown sugar combination, while Liam opted for the classic milk flavor. Both were incredibly delicious and refreshing. I noticed they also offer hamburgers and beef bowls, but we were still full from lunch.

Before dinner, we squeezed in a bit of shopping at Mirumiru Honpo Main Store. I picked up a few souvenirs, including some locally made crafts and snacks. It's always nice to support local businesses and bring home a piece of the island's culture.

For dinner, we decided to try Umaru, an okonomiyaki restaurant near Kabira Bay. This charming restaurant is housed in a traditional wooden home, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We sat at the tatami seating area, which added to the authentic experience. We ordered the Ishigaki beef okonomiyaki and the seafood okonomiyaki, both of which were cooked to perfection. The flavors were incredible, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

As we drove back to our guesthouse, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the celestial wonders at the observatory to the underwater beauty of Shiraho Beach, Ishigaki Island had truly captivated us. It's a place where nature and science intertwine, offering a unique and unforgettable experience. Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Banna Park and the Ishigaki Island Ibaruma Sabichi Cave. I am excited to see what other hidden gems this island holds.

Back at our guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey with Liam. Sharing these experiences with him makes them all the more special. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of stars and coral, eager for the adventures that tomorrow would bring.
