Exploring the Natural Wonders of Ishigaki Island
Day 6: North to South: A Day of Contrasts on Ishigaki Island
Discover Ishigaki Island's diverse beauty! From Hirakubozaki's panoramic views to Arakawa Falls' serene rainforest, a day of unforgettable sights.
Island Extremes: Lighthouses and Waterfalls
Today was a day of incredible contrasts, showcasing the diverse beauty of Ishigaki Island. We journeyed from the northernmost point, with its windswept lighthouse and panoramic ocean views, to a lush, hidden waterfall in the heart of a rainforest. It was a day that truly captured the essence of this island paradise, and I can't wait to share all the details.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ichigyoichie, a local spot known for its traditional Okinawan cuisine and lively atmosphere. I opted for a classic Japanese breakfast set, while Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried the Ishigaki beef sushi. Energized and ready for the day, we set off towards Hirakubozaki Lighthouse.
The drive to Hirakubozaki took us through rolling green hills and past grazing Japanese cows. The landscape reminded me a bit of the Norwegian countryside back home, but with a distinctly tropical twist. As we approached the northern tip of the island, the coastline became more rugged, and the wind picked up. October in Ishigaki offers pleasant weather, with daytime temperatures around 28°C, but with the chance of rain. Luckily, today was mostly sunny, perfect for exploring.
Hirakubozaki Lighthouse stands proudly at the edge of the peninsula, a beacon against the vast expanse of the ocean. The views from here were simply breathtaking. To the east, the Pacific Ocean stretched out towards the horizon, while to the west, the East China Sea shimmered in the sunlight. The contrast of the deep blue waters against the vibrant green landscape was a sight to behold.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the places where land meets the sea.
We spent some time walking around the lighthouse, taking photos and soaking in the atmosphere. The wind was strong, whipping through my hair as I gazed out at the endless horizon. It was a truly invigorating experience, a reminder of the raw power and beauty of nature.
After our visit to Hirakubozaki, we drove south towards Arakawa Falls. The change in scenery was remarkable. As we left the open coastline behind, we entered a dense, tropical rainforest. The air became thick with humidity, and the sounds of the forest filled our ears.
The path to Arakawa Falls was a short but enchanting trek through the jungle. Towering trees, their branches laden with ferns and vines, formed a canopy overhead. The ground was soft and damp, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of tropical flowers.
Finally, we reached the falls. Arakawa Falls isn't a massive, roaring waterfall, but rather a series of gentle cascades flowing into a clear, refreshing pool. The water was cool and inviting, a welcome respite from the humidity of the rainforest.

We couldn't resist taking a dip in the pool. The water was crystal clear, and the feeling of the cool water against my skin was heavenly. We even saw a few locals swinging off a rope swing into the pool, adding to the fun and carefree atmosphere.
For lunch, we stopped at Mugonka, an Italian restaurant that came highly recommended. I know, Italian food in Japan might seem a bit odd, but we were both craving something other than Japanese food. And I have to say, it was fantastic! We shared a pizza topped with local seafood and a bottle of chilled white wine. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of exploring.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Vagabundo, a Mexican bar and restaurant in Ishigaki City. We had heard great things about their vegetarian and vegan options, and since I'm always on the lookout for plant-based meals, we decided to give it a try. The atmosphere was lively and fun, and the food was delicious. I had a vegan burrito that was packed with flavor, and Liam enjoyed their al pastor dish with homemade tortillas.

To cap off our day, we decided to check out Chaka Chaka, a local bar known for its laid-back vibe. Sipping on local Orion beer, we reflected on the incredible day we had experienced. From the windswept cliffs of Hirakubozaki to the tranquil depths of Arakawa Falls, Ishigaki Island had once again captivated us with its diverse beauty.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve into the cultural side of Ishigaki. We'll be visiting the Ishigaki Shiritsu Yaeyama Museum and taking a stroll across the Southern Gate Bridge. We're also looking forward to trying some local soba at Yaeyama katosoba for breakfast and indulging in some pizza at Pizzeria il Trecorde for lunch. And, of course, no trip to Japan would be complete without a visit to Don Quijote, so we'll be making a stop at the Ishigakijima branch for some souvenir shopping. Until then, oyasumi nasai (good night) from Ishigaki Island!
I'm so grateful to be sharing this adventure with Liam, whose enthusiasm and love for nature matches my own. It makes every experience that much richer.
