Day 10: A Day of Cultural Immersion and Culinary Delights in Chefchaouen
Explore Chefchaouen's Ethnographic Museum, vibrant Place El Haouta, and savor local flavors at Ali Baba, Hajji, and Blue Dream restaurants.
A Sunday Stroll Through Chefchaouen's Soul
Today, I embraced the heart of Chefchaouen, diving deep into its cultural tapestry and savoring the flavors that define this blue-washed city. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and connection, as I wandered through museums, bustling squares, and welcoming restaurants. Each experience added a new layer to my understanding of this enchanting place, making me feel more connected to its spirit.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Ali Baba. Though some reviews online were mixed, I decided to give it a try, and I'm so glad I did. The warm atmosphere and the promise of traditional Moroccan flavors were too enticing to resist. I opted for a classic Moroccan breakfast of msemen, a flaky pancake, served with honey and a pot of mint tea. The msemen was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the combination of sweet honey and refreshing mint tea was the perfect start to a day of exploration. Fuelled up, I set off to immerse myself in the local culture.

My first stop was the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. Housed within the historic Kasbah, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's rich heritage. As I wandered through the exhibits, I was struck by the intricate details of the traditional costumes, the delicate craftsmanship of the pottery, and the historical significance of the ancient weapons. The museum beautifully showcased the evolution of art, craft, and trade in the region, highlighting the influences of Berber, Arab, and Andalusian cultures. It was a humbling experience to see how the past has shaped the present, and I left with a deeper appreciation for the cultural diversity of Chefchaouen.

To truly understand a place, you must walk its streets, explore its museums, and taste its food.
Next on my itinerary was Place El Haouta, a vibrant square in the heart of the medina. The square, adorned with blue-tiled buildings and a charming ambiance, was a feast for the eyes. The name Hawta, meaning surrounded or walled in, perfectly described the intimate character of this bustling hub. I joined locals and tourists alike, relaxing on benches and soaking in the lively atmosphere. Street vendors offered an array of local handicrafts, artwork, and souvenirs, adding to the square's vibrant energy. A beautiful four-sided fountain stood at the heart of the square, providing refreshing drinking water and contributing to the communal spirit. I spent a blissful hour simply observing the daily life of Chefchaouen unfold before me, capturing the beauty of the square through countless photographs.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Hajji, known as one of the oldest restaurants in Chefchaouen. Established in the 1940s, it continues to serve traditional Moroccan cuisine, and I was eager to experience its time-honored flavors. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I ordered the tagine, a classic Moroccan stew, and it arrived in a traditional earthenware pot, steaming with aromatic spices. The tender meat, flavorful vegetables, and rich sauce were a testament to the restaurant's dedication to authentic Moroccan cooking. It was a truly satisfying meal that warmed both my body and soul.

In the late afternoon, I sought refuge from the heat at Cafe Clock. This cross-cultural cafe, with locations in Fez, Marrakech, and Chefchaouen, is known for its delicious Moroccan cuisine and vibrant cultural atmosphere. I climbed to the rooftop terrace, where I was rewarded with breathtaking views of the blue-painted city and the surrounding Rif Mountains. I ordered a refreshing glass of mint lemonade and simply savored the moment, listening to the sounds of the city below. Cafe Clock is more than just a place to eat; it's a hub for cultural exchange, offering cooking classes, live music, and storytelling events. It's a place where travelers and locals come together to share stories, learn from one another, and celebrate the richness of Moroccan culture.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Restaurant Blue Dream for dinner. This charming eatery is celebrated for its authentic Moroccan dishes and inviting ambiance. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, with its cozy interior, friendly staff, and mouthwatering menu. I decided to try the couscous, a traditional Berber dish made with semolina, vegetables, and meat. The couscous was light and fluffy, and the vegetables were perfectly cooked, creating a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate. The restaurant also had live music, adding to the magical atmosphere. It was the perfect ending to a day of cultural immersion and culinary exploration.
