Family Adventure in Yakushima: Exploring Nature's Paradise
Day 11: A Sweet Farewell: Savoring Yakushima's Flavors and Memories
Saying goodbye to Yakushima with tropical fruits, local markets, and heartfelt memories of our family adventure on this enchanting island.
Island Flavors and Fond Farewells
As our Yakushima adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve shared as a family. Today was all about savoring the last moments, immersing ourselves in the local culture, and picking up a few treasures to bring home. It’s amazing how deeply this island has touched our hearts; the ancient forests, the vibrant wildlife, and the warm hospitality of the people have left an indelible mark.
Our day began with a quick and convenient breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. While airport food isn't usually something to write home about, it was perfect for fueling up before our final day of exploration. I opted for a simple Japanese breakfast set, while Liam enjoyed a hearty bowl of noodles. Nadia, ever the fan of anything sweet, devoured a pastry with gusto..

With our bellies full, we set off to Yakushima South Village. Nestled in the heart of Yakushima, this charming spot offered a serene escape. The kids were excited to explore the beautiful surroundings and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. We wandered through the village, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the tranquil ambiance. It was a perfect way to start the day, connecting with the island's natural beauty before diving into more structured activities.

Next on our list was the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”. This place was a tropical paradise! As we stepped into the garden, we were greeted by the sweet scents of exotic fruits and lush greenery. Nadia was particularly excited, her eyes wide with wonder as she spotted bananas, mangoes, and papayas growing right before her eyes. We took a guided tour, learning about the various fruits and plants, and even got to sample some freshly picked delicacies. The tankan citrus juice was a particular hit, its tangy sweetness a perfect representation of Yakushima’s vibrant flavors.

After our fruity adventure, it was time for lunch. We headed to Yakushima Gallery Restaurant, eager to taste more of the local cuisine. The restaurant had a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. I chose a seafood dish, savoring the delicate flavors of the ocean, while Liam opted for a hearty meat dish. Nadia, of course, went for the tempura, happily munching away on crispy vegetables and seafood. The Yakushima Gallery Restaurant is known for offering a space to 'see,' 'taste,' and 'feel' Yakushima.

With our appetites satisfied, we dedicated some time to souvenir shopping. Our destination was Pukaridō, a charming little shop known for its unique selection of Yakushima products. Located a short walk from the airport, it was the perfect spot to pick up some last-minute gifts. Inside, we found a treasure trove of local crafts, snacks, and Yakusugi (cedar) handicrafts. I was particularly drawn to the Sunao Yakushima accessories, made with Yakusugi wood and natural stone. Nadia, of course, had her eye on the sweets, and we ended up buying a few boxes of Ponkan Monaka, a local treat made with sweet citrus jam. Liam found some interesting local shochu.

As the day wound down, we enjoyed a final dinner at Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. This bustling market and restaurant is a hub of local life, offering a wide array of dishes and souvenirs. We savored deliciously grilled exocet (flying fish), tasty sashimi, and, for Liam, unforgettable nihonchu. Nadia enjoyed a hearty bowl of udon noodles. Before leaving, we picked up a few more souvenirs, including some handmade crafts and local snacks.
