Family Adventure in Yakushima: Exploring Nature's Paradise
Day 10: A Day of Discovery: Unveiling Yakushima's Secrets
Delving into Yakushima's heart at the World Heritage Center and Yakusugi Museum—a day of reflection on nature's resilience and beauty.
Whispers of the Ancient Cedars
Today was a day dedicated to understanding and appreciating the incredible natural heritage of Yakushima. We immersed ourselves in the island's conservation efforts and delved into the history of its majestic cedar forests. It’s amazing how much you can learn when you dedicate your time to understanding the history and conservation efforts of a place.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center. This center serves as an invaluable resource, offering insights into the island's unique ecosystem and the ongoing efforts to preserve it. As a Community Outreach Coordinator back in Kingston, I always appreciate seeing how different communities approach conservation. It's inspiring to witness the dedication and passion of the people working to protect Yakushima's natural wonders.

The Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center was truly insightful. The first floor was filled with exhibits detailing Yakushima's diverse flora and fauna. Nadia was particularly fascinated by the 3D map of the national park, pointing out all the mountains we had seen. Liam, ever the tech enthusiast, was engrossed in the displays about the initiatives for protecting the local ecosystem. For me, the most impactful part was learning about the etiquette for hiking the mountain trails to minimize our environmental impact. It reinforced the importance of responsible tourism, something I always strive to practice and promote on my blog.
To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.
After spending a few hours at the Conservation Center, we headed to the Yakusugi Museum. This museum is dedicated to the Cryptomeria japonica (sugi), known as Yakusugi when the trees are over 1,000 years old. The aroma of cedar filled the air as we entered, creating an immediate sense of tranquility. The museum showcased the history, culture, and natural environment of Yakushima, with a special focus on the island's ancient cedar trees.

One of the highlights was seeing a branch of the Jomon-sugi, which broke off due to heavy snowfall. It was a tangible connection to one of the island's most iconic trees. The museum also displayed examples of the trees, some cut to show the tree rings, illustrating the slow growth rates of cedar trees on Yakushima compared to other forested areas of Japan. It was fascinating to learn about the selective logging that occurred during the Edo Period and how the descendants of those trees, kosugi, naturally restored the forest.
Nadia particularly enjoyed the exhibit where visitors could shave off Yakushima wood to smell its distinctive perfume. Liam was intrigued by the display of logging tools, including a 20 kg chainsaw from the 1950s and traditional hand saws used since the Edo period. I was moved by the video presentation about Tomari Jochiku, an Edo Period Nichiren Buddhist priest who convinced authorities to exploit the forests, a decision that shaped the island's history.
After immersing ourselves in the museum's exhibits, we decided to take a break and have lunch at the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect for reflecting on everything we had learned throughout the day. We enjoyed some local dishes, discussing the intricate details of Yakushima's ecosystem and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

In the late afternoon, we ventured to Ambar for a relaxing drink. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration and learning. The ambiance was cozy, and we enjoyed chatting with some locals, gaining even more insights into the island's culture and way of life. It’s these small moments of connection that truly enrich our travel experiences.

We savored the flavors of Yakushima, indulging in fresh seafood and regional specialties. It was a fitting end to a day dedicated to appreciating the island's natural and cultural treasures.
