Whispers of the Past

Today marked the beginning of our family adventure in Kyoto, and what a start it was! From the vibrant vermillion gates of Fushimi Inari to the serene beauty of Kiyomizu-dera and the enchanting streets of Ninenzaka, we were swept away by the city's timeless charm. It felt like stepping back in time, each location whispering stories of centuries past.

Our day began with an early breakfast at Kizahashi. Located in the THE THOUSAND KYOTO hotel, the Japanese restaurant offered a range of traditional Japanese breakfasts, and multi-course kaiseki. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast, while Hans opted for a bento box. Elif, ever the adventurous one, tried some local delicacies she had never had before. Feeling satisfied, we set off for our first destination: Fushimi Inari Taisha.

The approach to Fushimi Inari was mesmerizing. Even though it's March, which is the beginning of the peak season, we arrived early enough to avoid the largest crowds. The thousands of vibrant red torii gates snaking up the mountain created a pathway that seemed to lead to another world. Each gate, donated by individuals and businesses, was inscribed with their names, a testament to their devotion and a wish for prosperity. As we walked, the sunlight filtering through the gates cast an ethereal glow, making the experience even more magical. I was particularly struck by the sheer scale of the shrine and the dedication of those who had contributed to its construction over the centuries.

The journey through the seemingly endless torii gates of Fushimi Inari was not just a walk, but a passage through time and tradition.

We climbed for a couple of hours, enjoying the views of Kyoto that opened up as we gained altitude. The higher we went, the fewer people we encountered, allowing us to soak in the tranquil atmosphere. Little Elif was fascinated by the fox statues, which are considered messengers of Inari, the god of rice, sake, and prosperity. We stopped at several small shrines along the way, each with its unique charm and history. It reminded me of the importance of respecting local traditions and beliefs, something I always try to instill in Elif.

After descending from Fushimi Inari, our appetites were calling, so we headed to Yasakadori Enraku for lunch. This restaurant, tucked away behind Kenninji Temple, offered a serene escape from the bustling city. We enjoyed a traditional Kaiseki meal in a private room, savoring each dish's delicate flavors and artistic presentation. The Oden was particularly delicious, its light broth infused with deep flavors. The restaurant's calm atmosphere and exquisite tableware made for a truly heartwarming experience. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back home in Stuttgart, adding a Turkish twist, of course!

Next on our itinerary was Kiyomizu-dera, another of Kyoto's iconic temples. The temple's wooden stage, perched on a hillside, offered breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The vibrant colors of the temple buildings against the backdrop of the surrounding hills were a sight to behold. We took our time exploring the various halls and pagodas, each with its own unique history and significance. The temple was especially beautiful during the spring, and it was easy to see why it attracts so many visitors year after year.

One of the highlights of Kiyomizu-dera was the Otowa Waterfall, where visitors can drink from three separate streams of water, each said to grant a different benefit: longevity, success in studies, and a happy love life. Elif, of course, wanted to try all three! Hans and I chuckled as she carefully tasted each stream, making a wish for the future. It was a lighthearted moment that perfectly captured the joy of traveling with family.

As the afternoon waned, we strolled through Ninenzaka, a charming preserved street leading to Kiyomizu-dera. The traditional wooden townhouses, now home to quaint shops and tea houses, exuded a sense of old-world charm. We browsed the various shops, admiring the local crafts and souvenirs. I was particularly drawn to a Kyoto Crafts Store, where I found some beautiful textiles that reminded me of my own work back in Stuttgart. Elif picked out a small trinket to remember our trip, while Hans found a traditional Japanese tea set to add to his collection.

For dinner, we indulged in a memorable experience at Kikunoi Roan, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant known for its exquisite Kaiseki cuisine. The restaurant's intimate setting and impeccable service created a truly special atmosphere. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing the chef's mastery of seasonal ingredients and culinary techniques. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful grilled dishes, every bite was a revelation. The experience reminded me of the importance of savoring each moment and appreciating the beauty of simplicity, a philosophy that resonates deeply with my artistic sensibilities.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the incredible day we had experienced. From the spiritual heights of Fushimi Inari to the cultural depths of Kiyomizu-dera and the culinary delights of Kikunoi Roan, Kyoto had captivated us with its beauty and charm. It was a day filled with unforgettable moments, shared with the people I love most. As we return to our hotel, Tokyu Stay Kyoto Sanjo-Karasuma, I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. We plan to visit the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. I'm sure it will be another day filled with wonder and discovery.

Before drifting off to sleep, I couldn't help but think about the travel adapter I had forgotten to pack. Thankfully, the hotel had one available, but it was a good reminder to always double-check my essentials before leaving home. As I close my eyes, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible journey and the opportunity to share it with my family. Kyoto, you have stolen a piece of my heart! This trip is already shaping up to be one of the most memorable experiences we've had as a family. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings and to continue sharing our adventures with you all.
