Reflecting on peace and history in Kyoto with visits to Ryozen Kannon Temple, Sanjusangendo Temple, and savoring local culinary delights.
Day 10: Echoes of History and Hope
Today was a day of deep reflection and quiet contemplation, a gentle reminder of the past and a hopeful look towards the future. Kyoto, with its serene temples and rich history, provided the perfect backdrop for this introspective journey. As the days of our family trip dwindle, I find myself cherishing each moment even more, trying to soak in the essence of this beautiful city.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Sakuragawa. The delicate flavors of the traditional Japanese breakfast were a gentle start to a day that promised both beauty and solemnity. I savored the subtle nuances of each dish, appreciating the artistry and care that went into its preparation. It reminded me of the textile work I do back in Stuttgart, where every thread and color tells a story.

Our first stop was the Ryozen Kannon Temple. The sheer scale of the Kannon statue, a towering figure of white concrete, was breathtaking. It stood as a poignant reminder of the lives lost during the Pacific War. The temple, established in 1955, serves as a memorial to those who perished, offering a space for reflection and peace. Walking through the grounds, I felt a profound sense of sorrow, but also a sense of hope. The temple isn't just a place of mourning; it's a testament to the enduring human spirit and the hope for a peaceful future. I was particularly moved by the monument to the unknown soldier, a tribute to the foreign soldiers who died under Japanese control. It’s a powerful statement of inclusivity and reconciliation.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are those that touch our hearts and remind us of our shared humanity.
Next, we visited the Sanjusangendo Temple, a place of immense beauty and spiritual significance. The temple is renowned for its 1001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Stepping into the main hall was like entering another world. The rows upon rows of golden statues, each with its own unique expression, created an awe-inspiring sight. The craftsmanship was extraordinary, a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans who created these masterpieces centuries ago. It was fascinating to learn that some of the original statues were saved from a fire in 1249, adding to the temple's rich history. Hans was particularly impressed by the sheer scale of the main hall, one of the longest wooden structures in Japan.

For lunch, we chose Hanasaki, drawn in by the promise of authentic Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant was located in a traditional machiya (townhouse), adding to the charm of the experience. We opted for a Kaiseki set, a multi-course meal that showcased the freshest seasonal ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef even prepared charcoal-grilled fish right at our table. It was a feast for the senses, a true celebration of Kyoto's culinary heritage.

As the evening approached, we decided to try Bar Fishbowl, a local favorite known for its cocktails and friendly atmosphere. The owner, an American from Guam, was incredibly welcoming, and we enjoyed chatting with him about his life in Kyoto. The bar itself was cozy and intimate, a perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. Elif tried a Japanese whiskey, while Hans opted for a local craft beer. I decided on a plum wine, its sweet and tangy flavor a perfect end to the day.

For dinner, we had reservations at Nakamura, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its traditional Kaiseki cuisine. This was to be a special treat, a culinary experience that we had looked forward to since planning our trip. From what I've read, Nakamura embodies the legacy of a long-standing Ryotei, a traditional Japanese dining establishment, and has been awarded three Michelin stars for eleven consecutive years! Unfortunately, when we arrived, there was a mixup with our reservation. Apparently, they were unable to accommodate us due to a private event. I was incredibly disappointed, but the staff was very apologetic and offered to make a reservation for us at another highly-regarded restaurant nearby.

Instead, we found a small, unassuming restaurant in Gion. The aroma of grilled fish and simmering broth wafted through the air, drawing us in like moths to a flame. Inside, the restaurant was warm and inviting, filled with locals enjoying their evening meals. We were seated at a small table near the window, giving us a glimpse of the bustling street outside. I decided to try a local specialty, a hearty stew of vegetables and tofu simmered in a rich, savory broth. It was simple yet satisfying, a comforting end to a somewhat chaotic day.
Despite the hiccup with our dinner reservation, today was a day filled with meaningful experiences and quiet reflection. The temples we visited offered a space for contemplation, while the meals we shared were a celebration of Kyoto's rich culinary heritage. As we prepare for our final day in Kyoto, I am filled with gratitude for the memories we have created and the lessons we have learned.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Toji Temple and Kyoto Tower, hoping to see more of Kyoto's historical and modern sights before we head back to Stuttgart. It will be a bittersweet day, filled with both excitement and a tinge of sadness as we bid farewell to this enchanting city. I am hoping to get some last minute souvenir shopping done at the Daimaru Kyoto Store.
Before drifting off to sleep, I thought about the importance of remembrance and reconciliation. In a world often torn apart by conflict and division, it is essential to remember the past, to learn from our mistakes, and to strive for a future of peace and understanding. Kyoto, with its serene temples and rich history, serves as a powerful reminder of this important message. As I closed my eyes, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful city and to reflect on the lessons it has taught me. I hope that my textile art can, in its own way, contribute to this message of peace and understanding.
